How would you like to live to be 100 years old? Well, perhaps you can. We now have the scientific means to help you live to be at least 100 years of age, if not older. However, in order to live to that age, you need to be hormonally and nutritionally sound. I hope that my book will help you to achieve this. It was written to provide you with the hormonal aspects of staying healthy, along with a few nutritional aspects. All the hormones in the body are a symphony. Much like an orchestra must play in tune, your hormonal symphony must be in tune throughout your life in order for you to have optimal health. Hormonal dysfunction can occur at any age―it is not exclusive to older people. For example, if you have PMS, postpartum depression, fibroids, or fibrocystic breast disease, there is a good chance that your progesterone-to-estrogen ratio is too low. Treatment for these kinds of ailments (or any hormonal abnormality, for that matter) may involve hormone replacement therapy (HRT). In the past, no matter what the symptoms or hormonal levels were, every woman would receive the same one-size-fits-all treatment. Today, things are different. This brings me to my second reason for writing this book: to herald a new age in medicine. With the completion of the Genome Project, a thirteen-year study completed in 2003 that was designed to identify the over 20,000 genes in human DNA, we now have the medical capability to develop and customize a treatment plan for each patient. Medicine is at a crossroads. Now, instead of just treating the symptoms of a disease, a new model of medicine is emerging that looks at the cause of the problem. For example: why might a person suffer from depression? Antidepressants are wonderful medications―if you need them. Their purpose is to treat the symptoms of depression―not to uncover the cause of depression. In the new specialty of Metabolic/Anti-Aging Medicine, the reason why a person has depression would be looked at. Depression may be a symptom of hypothyroidism, which is low thyroid function. Or, it may be a result of the sufferer’s body no longer making enough estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone. There are many different factors that can cause depression, and Metabolic/Anti-Aging Medicine aims to find and alleviate the cause instead of just treating the various symptoms. Just because two people are suffering the same symptoms does not mean they should receive the same treatment. Metabolic/Anti-Aging Medicine recognizes this and treats patients accordingly. To find a Metabolic/Anti-Aging specialist, see the Resources section. The pages of this text will explore the intricate web of your body’s hormonal system, tying together my reasons for writing the book by explaining the hormonal aspects of staying healthy and examining how individualized HRT can prevent some ailments from occurring. Part I of the text looks at the different hormones in your body, their functions, and the different side effects that can occur if these hormones are not at optimal levels. Additionally, the importance of hormonal levels and the ratio between them will be revealed. You will also learn the different etiologies that can cause hormonal imbalances, which may help you eliminate a problem before it gets too serious. The correct levels of all of your hormones are needed for you to achieve optimal health. I have organized Part I, the hormones, in the order I felt would be most useful to women. While the order of importance for every woman may be different, understanding each hormone is key. Part II focuses on the most common ailments and problems that arise from hormonal imbalances, such as perimenopause and menopause, PMS, postpartum depression, and endometriosis, to name a few. You’ll learn that even diseases that seemingly have nothing to do with hormones―like heart disease and osteoporosis―can be affected by a hormonal imbalance. Keeping your hormones at optimal levels is beneficial in preventing an array of ailments, even the ones you wouldn’t suspect. Part III focuses on HRT. You’ll learn the difference between synthetic and natural HRT, and how to get started should you decide HRT is the option for you. Different ways to have your hormone levels measured are discussed, along with a few different examples of HRT. Finally, you will learn how proper nutrition can benefit and boost the effects of HRT. Fortunately, we do not have to suffer in silence like our mothers did! Science can help us. Not only can we have our symptoms resolved, but we now have a better chance of helping maintain our vision, memory, and mobility. This is not “Star Trek†medicine. It is here and available now. You too can have individualized and customized care. This book will help you discover how.

I bought this book after seeing Dr. Pamela Smith on a television show talking about bio-identical hormone replacement therapy and finding out she was an expert in this field. Her knowledge was impressive while watching her and I was even more impressed after reading her book since I have gotten more than learning about the hormones. As far as I am concerned the information in the first sixty pages of this book should be shouted from the mountain tops and I am saddened that this book is not going to get the attention it deserves because of the "h" word. Actually when the word "hormone" used by a medical doctor or media what they refer is synthetic drugs which cause all kinds of diseases from cancer to dementia and have nothing to do with bio-identical hormones which are the exact replica of hormones in human body. The reason medical doctors prescribe synthetic drugs instead of natural hormones is because in the USA, a natural substance can't be patented not allowing drug companies to charge a lot of money. As a lay person, my research of three years , which literally saved my life, revealed that a human body has hundred different hormones which function as messengers making it possible for brain to communicate and program each and every tissue in the human body. Without optimal level of these hormones, being healthy is out of the question. Human hormones work like a symphony and if one if out of tune, it affects the rest. Moreover most chronic disease is the result of deficiency in adrenal(cortisol) and thyroid hormones. This book was written for lay people who have no background in medicine in a "concise, mostly bullet-style format, as opposed to long, literary prose." Part I of the book is titled "Hormones" and covers most important hormones in the human body, their functions, symptoms of the deficiency and excess of each hormone, the reason of the deficiency or the excess and how to have an optimum level of it. The second part, "Ailments and Problems", talks about common female problems such as cervical dysplasia, DES babies, heart disease, fibrocystic breast disease, endometriosis, fibroids, menopause, migraines, osteoporosis, perimenopause, polycystic ovarian syndrome, postpartum depression, POF, POD, PMS, skin problems and vulvodynia. The third part, "Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)" compares synthetic hormones versus bio-identical hormones, hormonal testing methods, selective estrogen receptor modulators, birth control pills, nutrition and HRT. The conclusion section is followed by detailed summary of each part of the book, a list of resources, recommended readings, and forty-six pages of references which indicate how much research the author of this book did.To anybody suffering from any chronic disease (Since men and women have the same hormones in their bodies in different amounts), I recommend reading the first part of this book and watching Dr. Frank Shallenberger's free educational videos on his website called "Managing Your Thyroid and Adrenal Glands. The Secret of Healing Chronic Disease" and "Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement". His new book, "Bursting With Energy", also is pretty good and is about slowing aging and preventing chronic disease. My recommended list of readings:"Testosterone Syndrome" by Dr Euguene Shippen for women and men over fifty."What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause" by Dr John Lee for women over thirty and "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause" for women over fifty years old."Your Thyroid and How to Keep it Healthy" by Dr. Barry Durrant-Peatfield. This is the best book written about thyroid disorders, their relation to other illnesses such as diabetes, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue, bio-identical hormone replacement and much more.
I'm very impressed with this book and the real science behind the researchI can finally have confidence in a doctor who's diagnosis isn't slanted by pharmaceutical industry and insurance company interests, but by cutting edge science. This book was recommended by my endocrinologist and it has given me enough information to make healthy and informed choices that have already lead me to a better quality of life. I want to have the energy to enjoy my retirement when it's time. I'm tired of hearing how I should accept low energy, low libido, loss of tone, memory, etc as normal parts of aging. It's a must read for every woman!
I wanted to get off birth control and was referred this book by my Gyno. This book is a simplistic, easy to read, awesome breakdown/outlined book of all you need to know about hormones. Once I get my hormone levels checked, i will refer back to this book for all my questions.
My doctor (board certified in family practice, but very knowledgeable about women's hormones) recommended this book to me. He said that the author had been his mentor in the area of women's hormones.
I'm a Health Coach. This book provides much of the information I need as reference, including condition's explanation, nutrients needed and more.
My new Integrative Physician(who is the best!) here on the Space Coast...I also bought Kindle edition and 1 for each of my adult daughters who are in their thirties. I think we all benefit. The Medicine of the Future. To age with better health...In depth but understandable for the non Clinician. Need to write one for Men....
Very informative book. A must read for women especially as you approach middle age.
Easy reading in bullet style promoting understanding of what hormones do to help and how to identify why you are having problems. This book is a great read for those women with menopause/hormone deficiency problems! A must read!
