I have quite a bit of background in networking and telecom switching already, so this review is more from the perspective of what's in the box, and how well it works as a learning and sim tool. Other reviews and the product description already do a good job of explaining the actual content, although I will say this set adds some degree of oblique background or history which may not always be absolutely necessary in passing a CCNA exam, but it did help me see the big picture of why things developed the way they did.The Odom books by Cisco Press and some terrific competitors like Lammle's are all very good, but I decided on Odom. I searched around for the CCENT/CCNA ICND1 640-822 Official Cert Guide (3rd Edition) and CCNA ICND2 640-816 Official Cert Guide (3rd Edition) books separately, not realizing they also came together with this full version of the Cisco lab simulator in one set, where by 'full' version, meaning it has around 300 preset labs plus the ability to respond to any current Cisco command. I would not characterize any consumer-level publication as having a 100% fully-compatible router/switch simulator, but still, no matter what the lab subject was, I found I could enter any valid IOS command and it responded correctly. In fact, within the labs, I tended to go off on my own and start pinging and ipconfig'ing various devices, just to see if I could break the simulator...nope, not yet! It's well designed. In addition to various router/switch set-up for a given lab, the simulator also allows you to configure or dump status of connected hosts like PC's. Finally, it looks and operates just like the exam environment, and is fun to use, so it prepares you well. If you don't have daily access to Cisco equipment, I really have to strongly recommend you look at this version of the training material. The cost of a re-take for any Cisco exam is high enough that having your own simulator (particularly at Amazon pricing) is a bargain.Taken together, the two ICND 1 and ICND 2 books are around 1,500 pages, although there is a lot of ToC/appendix content that is redundant between the two. I like Odom's style, and while these are essentially text books, they are written with enough of a colloquial or conversational style that they have been easy to read. I personally use my own study/note system by summarizing each chapter, but the author has several good study aids, including exercises that force you to memorize or look-up and record information, which are excellent for committing lots of information to memory. Each book also has it's own DVD in the back, just as they would if purchased separately. So, this set contains the two books, with a DVD in each book, plus the simulator DVD. Although I probably won't need to use this offer, this 3rd edition also has a code to purchase the e-book version for 70% off retail. I don't use e-book readers (yet), but the e-version includes a PDF of this set with searchable text...that might be nice to have.I'm running the simulator on OSX Snow Leopard and it works well. The content DVD's in the back of each book only run on Windows, but they operate fine in a virtual machine on the Mac. There are a few practice scenarios on the DVD's not in the book, such as extended exercises on subnetting, or a troubleshooting section that deals with various problems that don't fall under one particular heading. As a troubleshooter for over 20 years, that latter one is the exact kind of thing I have taught or write-up for myself, because it teaches students how to think critically, rather than just study with the sole objective of passing a test. Although, to that end, there are ample CCNA-sample test questions provided. They are not the exact questions that will be seen on the exam because they cannot be, but what I've found is you will learn what are the wrong answers, as well as the right ones, and that does help for the real exam.If you make it through this set and can pass the chapter test questions provided, plus one or two of the practice exams, you will almost certainly get your CCNA on the first try, and be well-grounded for your CCNP too.

While you need a sim or real experience to really pass, these two books present the most complete base of knowledge for the exam. The magic number subnetting trick works for most people and the author has an easy to read style (for a tech book). These books do have more material than the Sybex book by Lammle but I feel provide a more complete picture in a more natural order. The Lammle book spends much of it's time saying "Here is this...but don't worry, I will explain it more later in Chapter X." He also writes in an awkward style. Either will prepare you for the exam. These are longer but the additional material is mostly pre/post exams and he starts at a lower level. Lammle is not for someone completely new to technology as he expects you know the basics. Odom on the other hand explains each topic as it it were completely new - which can get frustrating if you are not actually new to it - but for the sake of completeness it makes sense. You never know when you will be thrown a question that has nothing to do with the real world but falls more into a "Tech Trivia" category.

Wendell Odom did a great job with these books. I know because I passed both the ICND1 and ICND2 exams. These books, along with the labs, the extra practice exams that go with these books (for $12 per set, a great buy) and some noodling about with Cisco Packet Tracer and GNS3, got me prepared. Don't just read the books - use them as you go through the practice tests and additional labs. The two exams these books specifically deal with will be retired on 30 Sept 2013, so you have until then to take the tests that go with these books. There are new exams from Cisco to reflect their updated CCENT-CCNA progression tracks, and the objectives on those exams do not match one-to-one with the material in these books. Even so, if Wendell Odom is the author, the book is going to be good. He has a great voice and explained concepts with sufficient clarity for the examination at hand. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

This is what you read if you need to learn the information to pass your CCNA.Everything is well explained.with lots of good examples and rationale for why things are named the way they are or why they work the way they do.I bought these books after being extremely frustrated with Todd Lammle's competing book "CCNA Cisco Certified Network Associate Study Guide, 7th Edition". In Todd's defense, that book may be useful ONCE YOU ACTUALLY KNOW THE INFORMATION as a focus on Cisco objectives, but unfortunately it's pretty useless in actually teaching that information for the first time. I found it to be misleading and discouraging. There might be something said for starting with these books and once you've finished them, maybe using Todd's to see what to concentrate on prior to taking your CCNA.

I bought this test prep for the CCNA exam. I was certified once, back in 1999 and figured that it shouldn't be all that hard to "bone up" on what has changed. Boy was I mistaken! So much has changed its like I had to start all over from scratch. But the course is great at helping me learn. In fact, I think the course and included Network Simulator are so good that I bought a copy for a friend who is also studying for the CCNA.Wish us luck! And YES I would recommend this study course for anyone starting a career in computer networking.

Just today I passed ICND1 exam and I must admit that the book contains exact material to pass the exam. There is no need for other words. All the topics will be tested and you can find the answers from the exam in the book.My recommendation to all who's preparing for Cisco exam - if you have no experience in networking, better start from something easier as CompTIA Network+ for example. I'm CompTIA Network+ and CTP+ certified, so some topics were relatively easy for me. Without knowledge obtained in mentioned certifications it would be hard to pass CCENT exam.
