Love this book. It is poorly titled, but the content is solid. It offers a really simple introduction to each book of the bible- Kind of a light survey of all the books. Lots of charts and such that put each book into its historical and biblical context. I hand these out to friends who need an introduction to the bible that is simple and visual. Each chapter covers a book of the bible and has background info, an outline and more. Love it. The newest edition has more color and has a bit more polish.

In the West, we are mostly familiar with the stories in the Bible but of course other peoples and cultures had their own myths about the creation of the universe and humanity.Beginning around the time of the French and American revolutions, archaeology started to assist in explaining the distant past. Ancient languages were deciphered, literatures were compared and scholars were able to speculate on the nature of human cultures both before and after the invention of writing.However, the technologies which allow ancient human genomes to reveal the origins and migrations of peoples are, as Dr. Reich describes, comparable to the invention of the microscope in the amount of light that can be shed on human history and prehistory. While still in its infancy as a science, the genomic research performed by Dr. Reich and his colleagues has already upended theories of human origins from Europe to India with scientifically grounded accounts.The emphasis here is on scientific, in that, unlike debates over literary composition of ancient texts, the accounts of history derived from the genome are falsifiable. One could always sequence the genome of another ancient human and provide evidence that, say, Dr. Reich’s account of a population from the Eurasian steppe invading India around the time of the Vedic writings is not supported.One can read this book simply for its insights into prehistory as it supplies theories, some provisional, to account for all the major peoples of the world: European, South Asian, East Asian, Polynesian, African and Native Americans from North and South America.But one can also read the book for the excitement at the birth of a new science that promises to be as revelatory as the observations from satellites scanning distant galaxies for the origins of dark matter. Here is a book that captures the breath-taking changes in genomics and the effect on our understanding of the human past, by a pioneer in the subject. "Who We Are And How We Got Here" provides an explanation of the rapidly evolving technology in layman's terms. Author David Reich then walks the reader through the new theories on how modern human populations came to inhabit various portions of the world. The changes are stunning, with the promise of more to come.For this former anthropology student, the discussion of the populating of Europe and the Americas was particularly fascinating. That process was far more complex than could be taught a generation ago. Genomics is providing levels of detail that simply weren't available to earlier researchers. The author sketches the roles played by various populations of modern humans, Neanderthals, and Denisovans, and their sometimes surprising contributions to the current populations of those regions. The maps and charts are particularly helpful in illustrating the discussion, which can get a little dense.In later chapters, the author "goes there" and warns that future study may reveal differences in human populations that go beyond physical appearance. He is properly nervous about the impact of that information and how it might be misused, but determined to embrace the progress in science. Highly recommended to the general reader.

David Reich's book is generating some controversy for reasons I don't really understand. It is a fascinating exploration of some of the most exciting current research in human genetics. If your ears have perked up when you've heard about DNA being extracted from Neanderthal fossils (or older), this book will satisfy many of your questions. If I had known this was coming when I dipped my toes in genetics in college, would have jumped in rather run for the hills.Another significant point about the e-book.... The Kindle version of this book is the _first_ that I have personally seen where the e-book is noticeably _better_ than the paper. In particular, charts and images that are often produced terribly badly in e-books are particularly good here.

I enjoy and read a lot of history. Until recently, I thought the best we could do in determining things about early human history was to speculate based on the bones and pots found by archeologists. Now Dr. Reich and a growing number of geneticists who are specializing in early (deep) human history are working out the details of early human history in a way that I would have thought impossible even a decade ago. Using human genomes from both modern and from ancient bones they are able to provide details information about human populations and migrations.For example, they can not only tell us that European hunters and gathers were invaded by farmers from Antolia around 9000 ybp, but can also tell us that these early hunters/gathers and farmers were themselves wiped out by later pastorial migrants from the caucaus who spoke endo-european. This isn't speculation, as we are used to in history texts, but based on facts generated by new techniques that let us analyze the genomes of modern and ancient bones. Many fascinating historical questions that I would have thought could never be answered and now answered.This is a must read book for anyone interested in early human history. It's well written and reasonably clear as to techniques involved, etc. For moe detail you would need to read scientific papers being published.

One of the greatest physics texts ever written. Landau immediately jumps into the water with clear descriptions of Einstein's principle of relativity and proceeds from there into momentum, plane waves, diffraction and the rest of modern theory. You cannot find a clearer, easier to read or more principle-driven elaboration of modern physics and fields.

I have read the old version in French which was very concise and the new one is even more concise.Landau & Lipchitz do not need recommendation as I think they are the best books I know of. I recommend the book of Field Theory to those who already are knowledgeable and who would like to add a high level overview on the field theory (including Relativity).This overview goes in parallel with a deep insight on the various aspects of the theory.(I also very strongly recommend Vol1 : Classical Mechanics of the same authors)

Landau's approach to Classical Field Theory demonstrates his ability to be clear, concise, and elegant without drowning out the physics with math. I will say, however, that Landau requires a certain maturity to appreciate his style (same goes for Rudin's books of analysis). I would recommend this title to those with a working knowledge of classical E & M, vector/tensor analysis, and of special relativity. It is also wise to work through the author's Theoretical Mechanics to get a taste of their style. I believe, contrary to many, that this book is appropriate for self study if one is willing to do the work (not only the exercises but following along pencil in hand). I suggest reading a passage and then covering it up and then trying to do the derivations by hand. My only complaint is the quality of print, which has is not the fault of the authors. It is especially annoying at first.

It's so simple to read and just to the point. I honestly had to use the Jackson book, which was not that great, but made a great grade because of the Landau-Lifshitz classic. This is a great upper-level E&M book. Every problem in the book has at least a partial solution to get you started and many have complete solutions. It's a great resource for studying E&M as well as general field theory.

Landau was a master: Concise, insightful, and capable of prodding the student's intellect to solve problems for oneself.As this text elucidates, Electrodynamics cannot be properly understood without the uber-principle of Relativity as foundation; and that is just the beginning.I am still fascinated and a little exhilarated every time I am reminded of the Gauge Invariance associated with the Electrodynamic field. Landau broaches this subject near the very beginning of the text (Paragraph 18) in an elegant way. Because the definitions of the Magnetic field (B) and Electric field (E) contain only the DERIVATIVES of the corresponding potentials rather than the potentials themselves (A, and phi, respectively), it's easily proven that adding constants to the potentials will not affect the field intensities (remember the derivative of a constant = zero!).Here's the MathExample: E Field only:E = -1/c (dA/dt) - grad(phi)But if we change A and phi by adding constants to them, i.e.:A' = A + grad(f)phi' = phi - 1/c(df/dt)Thus, the new field E' = -1/c (dA'/dt) - grad (phi')or, expanding:E' = -1/c (dA/dt) - 1/c (d/dt grad(f)) - grad (phi) + 1/c grad (df/dt)The second and fourth terms on the right cancel, so E' = -1/c (dA/dt) - grad (phi) = E.The field intensity is unchanged despite changing the potentials.Same result obtains when considering the Magnetic field B = curl AAnother bombshell is that no matter how one is moving, the total Electrodynamic field does not change. When Truman Capote published La Cote Basque 1965 (in 1975), it was much to the embarrassment and shame of a top tier group of NY Society women, formerly referred to by Truman Capote as his "Swans." The Swans were comprised of Barbara Paley, Slim Keith, C.Z. Guest, Maria Agnelli and Gloria Guinness (and several others). For a few decades – the 1950s to the 1970s – these were the "IT" girls. You didn't mess with them. That is, unless you were Truman Capote on booze and drugs. There is a Vanity Fair article entitled, Bye Society, by Gerald Clarke, from 1988 that one can read online – just google it – that is very informative as this story goes.For many years, Truman Capote ingratiated himself into the lives of these women, who loved and adored him and who trusted him with all of their many secrets and private circumstances. His later downward spiral following years of obsessive focus on In Cold Blood, a time that included enough alcohol and drugs to choke a horse, resulted in his somewhat unethical betrayal of the Swans right there on the pages of Esquire, for all the world to see.Truman was especially close to Barbara "Babe" Paley, the glamorous wife of CBS executive, Bill Paley, and much of this novel has to do with this central relationship. In a way, Truman and Babe were soulmate friends who sincerely adored and understood each other's frailties. Truman was welcomed into Babe's life as well as the other ladies' lives, complete with a constant flow of invitations to their magnificent houses and yachts and gifts of extravagant luxuries. Even as a relatively young and unknown writer, he was accepted into influential circles, meeting people and celebrities he wouldn't have otherwise.As his fame grew and his talent recognized, he changed. And not for the better. With an overindulgence of drugs and drink, he became unable to focus on another book the magnitude of In Cold Blood. Instead, he penned La Cote Basque 1965 (in 1975) and betrayed his beloved Babe and the rest of the Swans. The results were quite shattering for most of the group. As the Vanity Fair article states, he committed Social Suicide. Big time.This novel is based on facts but does fill in some of the blanks with literary fiction, which includes a sufficient amount of juicy, catty, backstabbing dialogue. We learn a lot about Truman's personal life, his mother issues, his longing for fame and notoriety and his downward spiral into that Social Suicide. The funny thing is that when you think about this type of thing in today's media environment, the fallout would be minimal. Back then it was devastating.I read this back to back with a small book of Truman Capote's early stories that is just being released. It was a nice companion, thinking about Truman's relationships and lifestyle.Well written and researched.Recommend.

Some readers will have little interest in these characters and their world, floating like whipped cream on top of the Fifties and Sixties. The complex of relationships between Truman Capote and his "swans" (wealthy, socially powerful, gorgeous society women: Babe Paley and her sisters, Slim Keith, CZ Guest, Gloria Guinness, Marella Agnelli, Carol Matthau, Gloria Vanderbilt, Pamela Digby Churchill Heyward Harriman and others); and their husbands, esp Bill Paley, is here treated in a "non-fiction novel", a literary form Capote claimed to invent, and used to impressive effect in his masterpiece, In Cold Blood.Benjamin is not a stylist at Capote's level, but she writes well. (I should mention that i listened to an audible version instead of reading print.) She brings to life the emotional activity behind all that luxurious beauty and social perfection - she is esp good with Capote, Babe Paley, Slim Keith, and Bill Paley, our principle players.I was already familiar with many of these stories, esp Capote's triumph and fall, and the aftermath of the story La Cote Basque, 1965. Many other reviewers have given vivid intros.----For me, the weakest points are:The symbolic bookends at the beginning and end, happily brief.The dialogue at the imagined "swan power lunch" after the Esquire publication, which seems somewhat weak.The re-working of who might have left the stains on those sheets. While Benjamin's version has some poignancy, Benjamin's choice, who cared deeply for Babe, would never have behaved so - and this version undercuts the point of Truman's story: the deliberate insult the old-money, un-swan-like WASP wife intended to wield as she conveyed her contempt for the Jewish mogul who dared to believe himself in her league.----The best parts are the voices of Truman, Babe, Bill, and Slim, who come to life. They grew on me until they felt fully formed. The writer makes real the fragile trust Truman and Babe hold in each other, until he goes too far.I wish someone would publish depth biographies of these swans and their world, and i would also love a photographic history. We can be nostalgic because this world is as lost as Fitzgerald's hopes and dreams, as given to Gatzby. These socialites already seemed quaint and "as seen through a glass" in the seventies, and Amanda Burden, Babe Paley's daughter, has chosen and succeeded at a very different and modern sort of life.Curously the most successful of these swans, in the terms of today's worldviews, are Pamela Harriman, "the courtesan of the century", the least swan-like, who transformed herself into a real power with a notable career; CZ Guest, gardening expert, and to appearances the least fragile, most confident and emotionally whole of this group, and the one who stayed in touch with Capote; Gloria Vanderbilt, survivor of a horrible childhood, who re-invented herself as a notable businesswoman.I started this expecting a "beach read" and found much more.Note:Among the swans I mention, I give all the various names only of Pamela Harriman. This is not intended as catty. Pamela, sometimes called "the courtesan if the century", used her family heritage, aristocratic birth, husbands, membership in the Churchill family, lovers, connections, and shrewdness to create a unique and not always admirable life story. She seemed to live decades in luxurious idleness before she came to New York and started in earnest on her career of marriage upwards and transforming her growing influence into astonishing political power. Her various biographies are worthy reading.

Truman Capote remains a perpetual person of interest for me. This book comes as the second book from his friend Harper Lee has been published reopening the spotlight on the character Dill based on his childhood. Whether this is simply coincidence I could not say. It is interesting that Nell Lee was known to have struggled reply with this second book and was thought for years to have failed to produce one. Truman famously redefined the form of the non fiction history developing the story and characters of the murderers as a significant part of the book. His labor involved a close relationship with one of the men and a subsequent ambivalence awaiting the execution so that his book could be published.He never recovered his persona, his character or his work after the acclaim that met the publication.Along the way he was supported by "Swans of Fifth Avenue". This novel is based on the extraordinary, wealthy and multifaceted women friends who admitted him to "her world , a world of quiet elegance, artifice, presentation". He was already well known for such words as "Breakfast at Tiffany's". He lived within the world of these women, often lonely, thrilled to be patrons of Capote.As the histories and private miseries of his swans and of Truman develop, a tragedy of hubris unfolds that intrigues the reader and provides that all so important "rich porn" of those who live a different life.

I found this author’s Americans Against Abusive Probate Guardianship web site after reading Rachel Aviv’s terrifying New Yorker article “How the Elderly Lose Their Rights.” My lawyer friends have taught me not to draw any conclusions until I’ve read the applicable statutes which are always available though Cornell Law and state legislature web sites. I was shocked to learn that the law in Nevada, the state that Aviv reported on, allows a probate judge to break a living trust. Further web searching revealed that other states also allow a judge to nullify a person’s wishes for the distribution of belongings after death. Yikes! Everything Suze Orman said about money bringing security was wrong. The guardianship system punishes people for being responsible and staying out of debt. Money just makes a person a higher value target for a predatory guardian.I am impressed with Dr. Sugar’s cogent analysis of the guardianship system in this country. I plan to implement some of the suggestions in his book. In particular, I plan on making a video of me reading an advance directive forbidding that I ever be made the property of a professional guardian. I’m going to include instructions that the video be supplied to media outlets if my wishes are disregarded. I’m also going to write, notarize, and film a statement that my video is released from all copyright restrictions. I don’t want to have a guardian negate my wishes by suppressing my video by copyrighting my image. Perhaps it’s a quixotic Thermopylae-Alamo-Warsaw Ghetto strategy. I may die broke, isolated, and abused in a substandard nursing home. But at least I will have made one last stand against oppression.
