Simple portable book of Catholic prayers with the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur approval from the Church. If you have trouble remembering or are learning aby prayers this one has a good range of important ones. Cover is a fake leather covee that the actual booklet slips into. What I expected for the low low price i paid on Amazon for it. I really appreciate the large font and readability (other publishers TAKE NOTE!).

People are always complaining to me that their copy of Fitzgerald's Catholic Book of Prayers is a crummy vinyl or a peeling imitation leather that they've had for too many years. I can't blame them, as I used to be one of those people with an imitation leather copy. Many people wish it was available in leather, like their Bible, and somehow haven't noticed that it has been, for a couple of decades now. It really isn't any fun getting old and realizing you missed out on an important piece of new information or a new edition of a beloved book is one of the reasons. But, for once, I'm not the silly one who didn't notice and, so, can say that I find this entire situation hilarious, as the bonded leather edition has been available for so many years and I keep having to direct people to this listing.And so, realizing that reviews show up on internet searches, for anyone who is looking for leather and using the keyword search feature to locate reviews for a leather edition, the link at the top of this review is for the leather bound version, ISBN-13: 978-0899429113 , also searchable as ISBN9780899429113 . It comes in a pleasing burgundy leather, more of a standard reddish-brown than the more purple burgundy we usually see these days, at least to my eyes, so it seems a suitable color for men or women. The interior, pages are the same as the other editions. This edition has lovely gilded edges and a nice, sun-yellow colored satin ribbon, as a page marker. The binding is sewn, not merely glued, which means this will be more durable, very much like a nice leather Bible, and because it is so small and thin (6 5/8 by 4 1/2 by just over 1/2 inch) and because it has large print, it is suitable for carrying in a purse or briefcase for daily use and absolutely suitable for travel.Good luck finding the prayer book that will work for your needs. It's amazing. Keep it in my car for throwing in a beautiful prayer before work or when snagging some lunch. Only downside is the protector cover is a synthetic plastic type thing that warps in the heat of my car during the brute desert heat where I live. Still, it's amazing. Very nice to have a handy little prayer book to take everywhere with me. The book is 4.5" × 6" × 255+ pages with very large font. The contents of this book far exceeded my expectations. This book of prayers is a must have for anyone interested in understanding the importance of and wants to develop a better prayer life. Would have given 5 stars if the vinyl cover could be removed yielding the same imagery and writing on the actual book instead of being blank.

This prayer book is excellent. There are many prayers in this book. The book is well made, with well defined lettering. Very easy to read. Very pleased with this book. Its has just about all the prayers that one would desire. I especially liked the two prayers of St. Thomas Aquinas. Inside there are Confession prayers, along with Stations of the Cross, The Rosary, Order of the Mass, and many, many more. I highly recommend this prayer book.

These books are quite tiny, as in pocket-size. The original hardcover is a standard size book, but not this edition, although the only difference in the heading is paperback versus hardcover. While poetry can be lovely in pocket size books, detailed cartoons suffer in the miniature edition. In the original, the cartoons are wonderful. Fabulous gift of laughter for someone who is hospital-bound, which was my intention, but this edition is too small to be fully enjoyed, especially by anyone with vision affected by age/illness. Oddly, even though it was only two weeks after receiving the books when I tried to return them (because they are just too small for the older patients for whom these are intended) according to the Amazon site these are only eligible to be replaced with others of the same item, these are not eligible to be returned for a refund. Peculiar because Amazon has been good about returns in the past. Go figure. So be careful to check the size listed in the fine print on each edition that you consider before you order!

First off, the book is tiny. I mean really tiny. It's about 3 inches square. You can't discern the mini size from the Amazon picture, so be prepared. And, correspondingly, the cartoons are very small and may be hard to read if your eyes are over 45 years of age.The editors have culled together what are ostensibly the most humorous of the doctor-related cartoons from the New Yorker. Because humor is in the eye of the beholder, I can't say if they succeeded. All I can say is that there were a few gems for me, principally those by Gahan Wilson and Charles Addams. The average entry made me smile a little on the inside, but not much more than that.The New Yorker Book of Doctor Cartoons can be useful if you are in the position of needing doctor related visual humor on a regular basis. I could see this book of value to people who give presentations about health care, doctors, or medicine. I could also see this book as a nice (but did I mention TINY) gift to give to the doctors in your life. Doctors who can laugh at themselves will appreciate the humor. I know. I laugh at myself all the time (and yes, I'm a doctor).While not about doctors per se, an alternative to consider is: The Party After You Left

I got the paperback and I'm returning it. This is a tiny, four-inch-square, very unimpressive little book printed with pale ink. I got it for someone's birthday and would have been embarrassed to give it to him. The few cartoons I looked at did not strike me as funny, either. I wish I had read other reviews before buying it. It is way over-priced, but not of interest at any price.

Despite what I am about to say about the downsides of Friedman's approach, this is a book well worth reading. It's just a bit too sure that it has revealed all we need to know about motivations behind behaviors. On that point, I'm unconvinced. More on that in a moment.As noted by most reviewers, he does a credible job in the first part of the book explaining the basics of economics. The graphs are a bit difficult if it is the reader's first exposure to economics, but I found his verbal explanations to be clear and compelling.He then goes on to apply this knowledge to a panoply of real world situations. His discussions on taxation, pollution, and product liability are quite thought provoking. If the reader isn't rethinking some cherished beliefs by this point, then he is either is already a U of C economics diehard or didn't pay enough attention. Capital stuff!I wish he had left out the very last section of the book. There he applies the same rationalistic approach to behaviors such as gift giving or punishing drug users. He fails to satisfy in both cases.He's largely puzzled why people choose to give gifts to people they like rather than money. He offers 'paternalism' as a possible explanation, but since paternalism's rewards seemingly can't be measured in terms of value, he gives up the topic, moves on, and leaves the reader hanging. Well developed theories of the basis of social power from psychology offer more well developed and satisfying explanations of gift giving and are also borne out in well run experiments.Similarly, it would seem that his beliefs applied to the question of drugs would make legalization the most rationale path. Surprisingly, he only wants to discuss the punishment alternatives for hard drug usage because he assumes that all hard drug users steal to support their habits. This then enables him to analyze the cost to society which then enables him to examine a range of punishment alternatives. That's fine as far as it goes, but it begs the discussion for the vast majority of illegal drug users who stick to so-called soft drugs. It also leaves unspoken whether all illegal drugs ought to be legal for people wealthy enough not have to steal to support their illegal purchases.There's a whole range of widespread human behaviors which cannot be explained satisfactorily by this type of analysis. Using hard drugs, participating in extremely dangerous sports, and masochism come to mind.So the 'uber-explanation' of all human behaviors in the last section of the book takes away substantively from the rest of the book. Since this train of thought in the first 80% of the book has lept from economics to the theory of law over the last 25 years via scholars such as Posner and Coase, it now influences much public policy discussion and judicial thinking today. For that reason alone, this book is worth reading. This is not 'just about economics' just as it is not 'all you need to know about what motivates human behavior'.

As usual, D. Friedman surprises amateur and profesional economists alike, with insightful and interesting applications of economic principles to situations that conventionally non-economical. Everyone will learn from it.

Explains a lot of economic principles in a generally easy to read way with real life examples. For those who've never studied economics this is a good introduction which is definitely not dry like some textbooks. The book blurb in the dustjacket is however more enthusiastic than the book deserves, as is the case with book blurbs.

Economics for the laypersons has become the topic "du jour." This book written nearly a decade ago before economics became hot far surpasses its successors such as "Freakonomics." David Friedman does not dumb down economics like the others. Other reviewers who had at least a rudimentary interest in economics really enjoyed it. A few others who confused economics with their own political views predictably got frustrated with it. Economics is not always intuitive. As a result, several reviewers thought the author made mistakes regarding the graphs on page 29, or the example on housing on page 35. I reread these passages carefully. The author is accurate, it is just that these economics concepts are counter-intuitive. And, contrary to Steve Levitt in "Freakonomics" David Friedman did not shy away from tackling the inherent complexity in economics.The book gives you a good foundation in both macro and microeconomics. Very early in the book he introduces and graphs demand and supply curves, marginal costs and revenue curves, utility functions. His coverage of international trade, taxation, subsidies, rent control is excellent. Along the way, you will also learn about investment theory and corporate finance. Friedman explains how the Efficient Market Hypothesis applies not only to stocks but freeway traffic and supermarket lines.Friedman also gives full credit and fleshes out the ideas from the founders of modern economics, including Adam Smith, David Ricardo, and Alfred Marshall. This is unlike Steve Levitt in "Freakonomics" who truly believed he was the first economist to tackle every day issues forgetting that economics is the science of understanding everyday behavior to begin with.For further reading, if you want to pursue an econ refresher I recommend an actual textbook: "Principles of Economics" by Gregory Mankiw. This is a textbook with a hip and humorous attitude. The Economist, the British magazine, raved about it when it came out. I also recommend Gary Becker's "The Economics of Life", and Steve Landsburg's "The Armchair Economist."
