Love this book so much that I have bought three as presents after receiving my daughters. The book is high quality with a beutiful jacket cover, great characters and bright colors. My daughter (age 3) giggles with anticipation when we pull it out to read. The Tickle Monster guides you on a laugh filled reading adventure as he tickles every thing from your knees to your arm pities. Each page brings with it a different tickle and a cute story makes it all flow nicely. One of our favorites

I bought this book a few years ago when my oldest was 3 or 4. He LOVED it. He loved it so much, I bought a copy of the book and mitts for my nieces. He is 7 now, and my youngest is 3.5, and still, they both LOVE it. Every night they beg us to read it- and many nights we do, even if it gets them a little excited before bed. :) Other nights if we want them more settled down, we skip it, lol I can't say enough good things about the book, I love the colorfulness and the rhyming! I love that it has you interacting with your kids, I know this will be a book I save forever. And I am NOT someone who is saving my kids stuff, but this is a keeper for sure, because of all the memories! So much fun, I HIGHLY recommend it. I'd give it more stars if I could! Oh, and on a related note, we also bought Boogie Monster, which is also a lot of fun!

I purchased this book for my two kids, ages 2 and 4, and they loved it right away. What isn't to love? It has cute prose, bright and fun illustrations, and lots of tickling! My kids have been in hysterics each time we have read it so far, and I don't see it losing its charm any time soon. It's a great tool for getting the giggles out before bedtime while enjoying some quality time together.

This book is a cherished family favorite! The Tickle Monster is a perfect gift for young children who love to be read to and long to be tickled! Anticipation builds as you read the story of a friendly monster who arrives from outer space with a love for tickling. The book is interactive and my giggly girls squeel in anticipation of a hearty tickle. It not only infuses reading time with fun activity, but it is also a great learning tool for young toddlers, providing opportunities to name body parts like feet, knees, and neck.In general if you have preschool age(or even slightly older) children, and are looking for a book to bond over, or for a fun and educational gift, this is the book for you!As with everything coming from Amazon Prime, shipping was fast and professional.

Everyone loves this book. This is now my go to gift for pretty much every small childs birthday. Lots of people specifically ask for no toys at birthday parties for kids these days, this book is the best of both worlds. It's a book... but it's still fun! Buy the tickle monster mitts and it's even better!

My daughter is 3 and has been having Monster fears lately, so this was a great book to get. One with a nice, friendly, TICKLE monster. And, boy, does she love this book. She asks for it over and over. She laughs and laughs and laughs. She knows when the tickles are coming and thinks it's the best. Not only is it fun for us to do together, and fun with books, but it's helping her see monsters in a better light. Wonderful book all around.

I get this for all the kids in my life (I’m at the age where they’re popping out left and right). It’s very popular in our group. But the parents have to get into it to make it extra fun.

My husband & grandson (5 yrs) have played Tickle Monster for at least 3 yrs. We spied this book at the airport & I immediately ordered it on Prime. Our grandson was thrilled & Papa has to read it with him every time he comes over. Really cute book & perfect for their Tickle Monster games.

Excellent book for anyone interested in this broadcast, broadcasting history or 1930's radio. The book gives excellent, in depth coverage of the subject. Some of the issues involved in the War of the Worlds broadcast are with us today, such as the power of the media, what should be the role of government with regards to the media and efforts of the media to police itself which can be worse than government regulation. A good point the book makes is that the hysteria was blown way out of proportion by the news media and much of the hysteria can be blamed on an ignorant, poorly informed public who ignored reports of a Martian invasion and thought the Germans had invaded or a natural disaster had occurred. Public ignorance is a problem today.

Schwartz takes you on a well-documented history covering the "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast in 1938, which caused few instances of public fear, but excessive newspaper and other media coverage. After the October 31st Halloween broadcast, a storm of trouble for Orson Welles and the broadcasting industry erupted as the FCC, Congress and public figures called for an investigation and more regulations. Follow this fascinating story of an industry caught before the start of WWII and McCarthyism that could have significantly restricted radio and television programming development in the early years.

Fascinating analysis of probably the most famous radio broadcast, exploring both the actual story behind the perceived mass hysteria in the US (a misinterpretation sadly still widely taught) and the importance of fake news for modern media consumption. Also simply a well-written book that's enjoyable to read.

I have read many books and articles on the subject of War of the Worlds. This is by far one of the best. In the top 2 for sure.It is very well researched and written, and a wealth of knowledge on the subject. In particular, I enjoyed the chapters on the subsequent and little known broadcasts of War of the Worlds theme in Santiago, Chile - Quito, Ecuador - and Buffalo, New York Highly Recommended.

Incredibly well written and researched- a major contribution to understanding the incident and Welles

The radio broadcast on Halloween Eve 1938 of _War of the Worlds_ is the stuff of legend; it was, according to the title of one of several dramatizations of the event, _The Night That Panicked America_. The fake newscast about invading Martians, the stories go, led thousands of Americans to flee their homes, some heading to safer territory, some grabbing their guns to do battle. These are good stories, and in some cases they are close to truth, but they do not at all represent what actually happened. A. Brad Schwartz has studied the broadcast and its aftermath for years, doing his senior honors thesis on it and writing about it for PBS. Now his entertaining _Broadcast Hysteria: Orson Welles’s War of the Worlds and the Art of Fake News_ (Hill and Wang) gives fresh documentation of what really happened. The story isn’t as dramatic as the “panic” versions, but it is more interesting with its new details, and with some lessons for us residents of the twentieth century who get our fake news from sources more modern than radio plays. The Mercury Theater radio shows were serious dramas broadcast by CBS, and serious listeners enjoyed them. Schwartz has drawn on letters listeners wrote to the FCC, CBS, and to Welles himself (some of these letters only recently resurfaced) to analyze what really happened as the broadcast progressed. There were people who panicked, but Schwartz explains, “These panicked scenes of flight and near flight, which turned _War of the Worlds_ into the stuff of American legend, did happen, but they were very, very rare.” There was no mass hysteria, no suicides, no potshots at a water tower that was mistaken for a towering Martian machine, and no highways clogged with cars. What did happen? Well, people listened to their radios - they either enjoyed the drama as good radio theater and a thrilling scary story, or they were scared out of their minds and wanted all the news immediately. There were about six million listeners to the show, and about a million thought there was a real emergency, but the sort of emergency was not clear. Some did think that Martians were coming, and others thought a comet had made a disastrous impact. Some tuning in the middle of the program could have gotten the impression that there was a natural disaster on the east coast, or some sort of invasion by human armies. They called each other to spread the stories, and they called the police, and they called the newspapers, but in almost every case, they did not panic. The general lack of panic wasn’t a good enough story for the press at the time. It was far more fun to spread the stories of people who hit the road to flee the Martians, and those are the stories that stuck. That millions of Americans panicked on hearing the broadcast turned out to be fake news, thought of as real even by those who had skepticism enough about the broadcast itself. Schwartz shows that this made people fret about government involvement in broadcasting, weakening the FCC. The panic is still invoked by people worried about how manipulative broadcasters might be. There have been fake news TV shows, like _Special Bulletin_ (1983), which was about a terrorist attack on Charleston, South Carolina. These shows didn’t produce the scares that the Mercury Theater did; Schwartz rightly points out that one of the reasons is that the visual effects on television might be iffy, but the visual effects of radio are always convincing, because people imagine them for themselves. And we have had Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and _The Onion_ to give us news that isn’t. Keep the airwaves open, is the lesson, and also: whether it be invading Martians, or Americans panicking in the streets: don’t believe everything you hear.

#2,663 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

A supposedly realistic story about a rush-job trip to a moon of Saturn. It has tons of actual realistic details, so you think the author really knows his stuff. But then it leaves HUGE, horrible, impossible gaping holes that just make you want to gag.First, the mission "training" consists only of a few medical test. Supposedly the mission is rushed for budget reasons ... supposedly just like the Apollo program. But Apollo, as much of a deadline as it had, spent months and months training the crew -- all together, for each task. But the crew of this ship don't even meet each other until a few days before they take off. The author didn't have to take you through the boring details of training. He could have mentioned it in a few paragraphs. But instead, he makes a point that there was no specific training at all for the mission tasks. Then: Apparently NASA doesn't bother to even send telemetry from the very critical supply ship back to earth. So a huge, horrible problem that happens doesn't even get a chance to be known by the main crew until months after it happens (this could have been fixed by merely changing a few dates in the text -- but it was left as a huge hole.) And almost worst of all, NASA doesn't send (for privacy reasons, I guess?? which is ludicrous) medical information on the crew back to earth.Oh, and don't look for any character development or interesting things like that. Just "they went and did this ... and then this ... and then this life-threatening problem happens and they don't even talk to NASA about it ..." and so forth. As bad as NASA is sometimes, considering the causes of two Shuttle disasters and the inefficiencies of some of their development projects, their incompetence is nothing like what is implied by this book.

It sounded great with glowing reviews but like many sci-fi novels, the literary quality suffers. The writing is clumsy, filled with one anachronism after the other, constatnt references ( in 2040’s) to current events and odd sentence structure. The biggest problem is not the rather boring story but the empty main character - Martin. At any time I expected to read, “And then Martin’s cybertronic brain froze”. He seems detached from reality. The first third was training for the mission (snore.....) then the interminable flight with the usual sci-fi problems - spacemances about as sexy as a heat shield, disaster after launch, miraculous solutions, blah blah. Finally they arrive, find alien life, are forced to sacrifice, have new problems before saving the day; I did not understand eithervthe structure Of the ending or the ending itself. If you want to get a manual on flying to Saturn this is the book for you. But if you want and grossing story about characters it change and grow and Imaginative plots then skip this one.

Morris is a science writer, and so while the descriptive aspects of this highly-detailed trip to Saturn's moon, Enceladus, are comprehensive and convincing, the novel is let down by being mostly exposition. Dialogue is sparse, and while the point of view is third-person, we only ever get into the head of reluctant astronaut-protagonist Martin (his surname is used so infrequently I can't actually recall it), and he seems to have Asperberger's or something similar, because he is generally emotionally disconnected from everything and everyone. Presented as a stereotypical, introspective geek, Martin spends so much time analyzing everything - from situations to his own reactions - that we're pretty much passengers in his emotionally monotone inner space. This means that all the alternative views that might have built up the tension - and lots goes wrong on a cobbled together space ship rushed off to Enceladus to look for alien life - are missing in action.Which is a shame, because Morris eventually delivers an interesting story, but it is dry as dust in the first 90% of the novel. Toward the end things get interesting, and the situation somewhat allows Martin to express his emotional voice, but it's too little, too late. Also, it needs an aggressive editor, because there are many instances of sentences that could have been pared back to make them both easier to read, and more 'slippery' with regards the storytelling. Instead, Morris tells, rather than emotes, which means the novel comes across more like a user manual than a story. So, an interesting tale if you like a lot of gritty detail about spaceflight and can accommodate a lack of dialogue and viewpoints. If not, be warned, it's interesting but not engaging.

This book was so different from other sci-Fi books in which we are ot concerning ourselves about a war or how to survive other intelligent life attempting to end humaniity, etc. Foer the last 10 - 20 years sci-fi has branched out into space operas, military space novels, etc. This book was none of the above. I would consider this a throw'-back to some form of the original type of sci-Fi novels. In fact it might be closer to Jules Verne than to our current sci-fi writers (no insult intended, just differnet style).Loved the book and it's characters and can't wait to start the next book in the series.

Great technical detail. Clever and inventive plot and twists. A very credible story about a most incredible mission. IMHO there are no significant flaws. I’ve purchased the next book in the series. For context, I’ve been reading sf since the mid-1950s (Heinlein, Asimov, Clarke, Benford, Hogan, etc.). My current favorites are novels by McDevitt and the James S A Corey Expanse series.

Wooden dialog, characters made of plastic and cardboard, very predictable plot with holes big enough to drop a moon through. Could not finish.I have no idea how the manuscript got past the editor and escaped into the wild.Pass.

There are a lot of books written on the topic but most go into details about the judicial system or other areas of law that do not apply to contracts. I wanted a book teaching about contracts. This book hit the nail right on the head. It explains topics well and includes everything that needs to be talked about. I am not an attorney and i don't want to be. Be to me, contacts are important. They are the basis of our business world. This book fit the bill for me.

Interesting, well written book containing numerous, up to date examples of contract law. Be aware that your individual state may have additional rules regarding contract law in addition to the ones cited in the textbook, so additional research may be warranted. Most of the other people in the class seemed to like the book, too. As soon as the class was over, I posted it for sale here and it sold within a week.

The author of this book is awesome. I assumed that I would be reading yet another boring and confusing legal book for my Contract Law class. Not so, this guy is clear and concise, and provides a plethora of examples for what he is writing about. If this author wrote all my legal books I'd be loving my legal studies sooooo much more!

It was good, had alot of marking inside but expected it. There was one page that was partially torn that was not made known to me before purchasing it, it was none the less satisfactory

textbooks as described

Book is OK, after all is class requirement... but information/learning process through the book... it wasn't wow information, just another one more!

good reference for my profession

as expected

#13,269 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

One of the great feats of being a small business owner -- besides being part of the backbone of America's economy -- is that one gets to spend evenings reading books and magazines about organizational management and other business topics in a continuous effort to improve one's own skills.Or so the theory goes. Yours truly, in fact, prefers to read about philosophy and history and would consider Plato to be the best organizational guru there ever was. Preferred self-help works include Dante's "Divine Comedy" and Boethius' "Consolation of Philosophy". But occasionally, nudged by the missus, I'll open up one of the works on her growing list of recommendations and start reading. So it happened that I bumped into "Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us" by Daniel Pink. In this book the author argues that how the vast majority of companies are motivating their workers "extrinsically" is completely outdated in our modern economy: "They continue to pursue practices such as short-term incentive plans and pay-for-performance schemes in the face of mounting evidence that such measures usually don’t work and often do harm." These monetary rewards, Pink writes, "can deliver a short-term boost — just as a jolt of caffeine can keep you cranking for a few more hours. But the effect wears off — and, worse, can reduce a person's longer-term motivation to continue the project." In today's world, the author argues, folks are motivated intrinsically. You leave them to their own devices, don't burden them with sticks and carrots, and the creativity will start flowing like the Mississipi River. This book is certainly interesting. The author puts forth a straightforward argument and provides ample research to back up his thesis, some of it eye-opening. Who would guess that young children are more motivated to produce a drawing if they are not expecting a reward after the fact? In another example, "researchers at Cornell University studied 320 small businesses, half of which granted workers autonomy, the other half relying on top-down direction. The businesses that offered autonomy grew at four times the rate of the control-oriented firms and had one-third the turnover."It all sounds solid enough, though the question arises which companies are being investigated here. Are these Cornell researchers comparing start-ups run by fresh college grads in Silicon Valley to the McDonald's in Pleasant Hill, Iowa? Or are we talking about similar industries in order to level the playing field? As mentioned above, this reviewer owns a small business himself -- though not of the glamorous kind -- and gets the sense that Pink's head exists in a bubble of Facebook, Apple, Uber and other innovative tech giants. His examples of companies motivating their employees the 'correct' way -- Atlassian (software), 3M, Netflix, Zappos.com, JetBlue, Facebook and more such companies -- suggest as much. Pink has little to say about the unmotivated piece of work fixing your sub over at the gas station, or about the housekeeper cleaning your hotel room at the La Quinta during your April Florida vacation. The author himself would deny this, of course, and in his defense, he does briefly address the issue of non-creative repetitive labor: "Whether you’re fixing sinks, ringing up groceries, selling cars, or writing a lesson plan, you and I need autonomy just as deeply as a great painter." But, he continues, the majority of us will at first struggle when thrown into the deep waters of "undiluted autonomy", and hence "Organizations must provide ... 'scaffolding' to help every employee find his footing to make the transition." Fair enough, but what does this "scaffolding" entail in a practical sense? It doesn't become very clear from proceeding through Pink's pages.Next follow some Rousseauian observations about human nature that the grand master of philosophical folly could himself have whipped up: "We're designed to be Type I [motivated by intrinsic desires]. But outside forces -- including the very idea that we need to be 'managed' -- have conspired to change our default setting and turn us into Type X [motivated by extrinsic desires]. If we update the environments we're in -- not only at work, but also at school and at home -- and if leaders recognize both the truth of the human condition and the science that supports it, we can return ourselves and our colleagues to our natural state." And, quoting a researcher on the topic: "The course of human history has always moved in the direction of greater freedom. And there's a reason for that -- because it's in our nature to push for it."I'm sorry, but human history is not moving unstoppably towards greater freedom any more than I, employer, am suppressing my workers' creative nature by setting deadlines and doling out incentives. What is happening here is that we in the West have arrived at an utter anomaly in human history in which the battle for basic subsistence has been won (for now) and that we are at liberty to enjoy the unprecedented luxuries brought forth by science, technology and the arts. It is certainly true that these fields are driven forward by man's intrinsic curiosity and desire to create new things, and the fact that they have thrust our civilization -- if not humanity at large -- to great heights should instill an enormous dose of gratitude and humility in us.But back down on Earth, real goods still need to be produced, not just dreamed up by hipster types: Oil and gas need to be pumped to the surface, corn and wheat have to be harvested, cars need to be assembled, hotel rooms need to be cleaned, restaurant meals have to be cooked, and homes need to be built. Much of the production of these goods revolves around basic, repetitive tasks and invokes a certain level of dread and boredom. From my personal experience, the majority of workers involved want to work just enough hours for their paycheck to hold them over to the next one (and who can blame them?). The successful completion of their tasks is contingent upon a supervisor setting clear expectations, checking for quality of work after the fact, and showing gratitude for good behavior by continuing the employment relationship and handing out a nice paycheck.None of this is to say that “Drive” isn't worth your valuable time. As with many such works, one takes a few good ideas and runs with them. While I can't afford to allow my employees to spend twenty percent of their time brainstorming about new products or process improvements, there's nothing stopping me from empowering them to have a say in how things are done in my company. So how about coming together for a half-day plenary session every three months and allow the staff to blurt out any idea that might have popped up in their head? I might just give it a try. With all this in mind, I would recommend this book to certain types of readers, such as consultants, employers or the budding and dreaming entrepreneur. Just don't expect to be blown away by every word you're reading.

Daniel Pink gives us the low-down on motivation and the contrast between what business believes to work and what science proves works.Pink breaks down motivation into different versions. Motivation 1.0 is our basic need of survival. It's the simplest level of motivation and there isn't much time spent on this topic.Motivation 2.0 is what Pink believes to be an outdated model. This is what is referred to as "carrots and sticks." We use these tools to encourage or reinforce positive behaviors and to curb behaviors we want to eliminate.Pink shows, through research and studies, that adding monetary incentives does not inspire us like many have believed. It only serves as a temporary boost but winds up fading fast.Instead, Pink believes we need to move to Motivation 3.0. This is where we are inspired by internal drivers rather than external factors. There are three main themes to 3.0 with autonomy, mastery and purpose. These are the driving factors that need to be fostered in order to motivate us. Companies employing ROWE, results-only work environments, have shown statistically that Motivation 3.0 works.Pink weaves in his book the findings of other noted authors and books in this same line of study like Dweck's Mindset, Csikszentmihalyi's Flow, Duckworth's work on Grit, along with work by Deci, Deming, Drucker, Kahneman, Gladwell, Godin, and many others. This book receives a 4.4 rating on Amazon after 1,039 reviews. Goodreads gives this one a 3.95 after 60,238 ratings and 3,131 reviews. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it.#FridaysFind #MIAGD #DanielPink #Drive

I gotta be honest, I expected more from this book, especially with all the reviews. In a nutshell, it tells you that people are driven by the need for fulfillment. It makes a valid point that we want to feel important at our job and in our life, but the rest of it is just fluff. I also found it a boring and dry read.I read "It's Okay to be the Boss" after this book and found it to be IMMENSELY better and effective (I've been practicing the teachings of "It's Okay to be the Boss" for a couple weeks now and have already seen many positive effects.) In terms of readability and effectiveness, I'd recommend "It's Okay to be the Boss" over this one 1000 times. (100% not a paid review btw. Honest opinion.)

Drive was an interesting read, definitely a 'Leadership' / 'self-improvement' type book. However, it did become repetitive and it lost my attention about half way through. I would consider this an airport book - something you pick up to read because you are bored, but not a must have or a re-read book. You aren't going to walk away from this book with any new TRUTHs.Hope this review was helpful! Let me know if you have any questions!
