I am a 13 year old boy (using his mom's account with her permission to post a review) and yes I have read all of Robert Beatty's books but none of them were quite like Willa of the Wood. Willa was different than Serafina in alot of ways but was still an easy to love character. The story was enthralling and made me want to turn the page and read more. There were no dull moments and the entire story was worth every minute I took to read it. I actually read the entire book in less than 24 hours and I stayed up all night reading and no, I don't usually binge read books! Actually this was my first binge read. I know some boys are turned away from books because the main character is female but I think this should be an exception regardless of your gender. Mr. Beatty does not write like any other authors, the way he writes draws you into the story hook, line and sinker! He weaves a tale and you can personally relate to the characters and by the end you feel like you were a part of the story. I also recommend the Serafina Series written by Mr. Robert Beatty.

I received an advanced reader copy of Willa of the Wood which is the first of a new series for middle school students written by author Robert Beatty.Mr. Beatty shares Willa’s perspective as he weaves a magical story that blends the life of this young night spirit into the rich local history of the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee people. Willa lives with her 137-year-old mamaw who is one of the last surviving woodwitches from the dwindling clan of Faeran people. This 12-year-old girl has the ability to blend into her forest surroundings and can communicate with nature. Willa has a great respect for her heritage and is determined to preserve the old ways of her clan.In the beginning of this action-packed mystery, Willa unwillingly has become her clan’s best thief. She is forced to go out and steal from the human day-folk each evening, by the padaren, who is the fearsome and selfish clan leader.This intriguing story evolves with increasing suspense as Willa’s loyalty and strength of character is evident as she makes important decisions during her interactions and encounters in an enchanted forest with trees, the river, wolves, bears, deer, otters, homesteaders, Cherokee people, her own clan, and the frightening newcomers with the huge destructive “iron machines” that are “murdering trees.” Willa shows great maturity, compassion, and loyalty as she faces one life-threatening event after another while trying to protect those she loves. She is very brave and is able to “stay bold,” just as the character Serafina does in Beatty’s related Serafina series.Willa is an inspiration for those of us who may need a reminder to respect nature and our environment. She learns how not to be judgmental and offers great lessons in kindness and unselfishness. Robert Beatty has again given his readers a gift with his words. His writing is lyrical. The imagery simply lifts me into the setting where he describes the mountain, “. . . white mist of the Smoky Mountains breath floated near its rounded top out across the world . . .” I still think about the “. . . great healing lake of the bears. . .” that he so beautifully described. I continue to think about the lake that “. . . felt as if the light of the sun had become liquid . . .”  I strongly recommend this book as an especially great read aloud for families or classroom use. The various science, history, and cultural themes make it a wonderful book for classroom teachers and this book will be an excellent resource for teaching context clues. Willa of the Wood

The fact that my kids beg and plead for me to read another chapter of this book every night and are willing to forego TV so I can read more to them warrants 5 stars. Plus, Robert Beatty is a beautiful writer to the point you can visualize the scenes in each chapter.However, I feel conflicted as a parent when it comes to the content. This book, while it does contain some good, well-written and moving messages about family, hope, overcoming fear and love, it also has some very dark and disturbing parts including violence, kidnapping, abuse, and murder, all of which frankly, make me feel like a marginal parent - kind of like giving my kids a Snickers bar for dinner when I should be offering a salad (just a hypothetical here).So, in truthfulness, I struggle with whether the content of the book is outweighed by the fact that my kids’ passion for reading and constant discussion and chatter about what they think will happen next in the book has been sparked by this author, darker content and all.Parents know their kids best, but the jury is still out for me. I definitely think this author is best for the tween or older crowd, although I know my 8 year olds would vehemently disagree!

As I was sitting in my chair, with my black cat Serafina in my lap. I have to admit that I was somewhat disappointed that Beatty's new book "Willa of the Wood" would be introducing a new character and it would not be a continuation of the Serafina stories. However, as I began to read I realized that this was going to be an amazing adventure! With the same descriptive detail that Beatty described the Biltmore Estate, he has continued this with his depiction of Willa and the world in which she lives. Willa is an ever-changing and lovable little spirit. Her daily life is full of sadness,chaos, and unimaginable circumstances. Willa is able to overcome these obstacles with the gifts from the forest, courageous animals, and love.The story has as many twists and turns as the river that flows through the forest.To my surprise, I did recognize an old friend or two along the journey! When you think all is lost, something happens and changes Willa's life forever, so have a tissue in hand, After reading this book, I can't decide which character I want to hear more about next...either way I know I won't be disappointed. Can't wait!

The immense amount of knowledge contained in the book enhances my learning and has helped to develop my understanding of neural science. The diagrams in the book are well illustrated and display the contents of the book effectively. This is a required book for graduation in my discipline and is for advanced learners only. The subject matter within the book might be difficult to grasp without some prior knowledge of neural science.The information in this book is outstanding and is unlike any other neural science textbook that I have read during my college career. With that said, the book is very “heavy”, in both weight and content. I haven’t weighed it myself, but it is the heaviest textbook I have had in my four years of college. However, with the relevant amount of information in the book, it is a price I’m willing to pay!I would recommend this textbook for people seeking an advanced education in the field of neural science. The book has complicated information, but with the detailed diagrams and case studies provided, the reader gains a better understanding of neural science.

When they illustrate neurons with empty outlines and maybe throw in a nucleus, they are leaving out most of the fascinating details of how neurons actually work. Those details can be found here!I just finished my undergrad in cell bio/biotech and hope to go to grad school in a field involving neural science, so I bought this book to get a head start. Now I wish I'd bought it earlier in my undergrad career, as I find learning details helps with retaining information.For a textbook of this size and with this much information, it is quite reasonably priced. I think splitting it into two volumes would have been a wise move, as you can't really lie down and read it without being crushed by its weight.

This textbook was easy to read, digest, and comprehend, making neuroscience much more accessible to those who do not specialize in the field. The diagrams/flowcharts and pictures in the book were also very helpful. There is just the right amount of depth and detail in the book to fully understand a given system without becoming too overwhelming. Loved it as someone aspiring to get into medicine and exploring different specialties in the professional health fields!

This book arrived swiftly, just as promised. It was much heftier than I'd expected (so taking it to school often was out of the question). I was obligated to read this for a graduate course, and, despite some of the more dense chapters being a bit tedious, I rather enjoyed the explanations overall. I would warn/recommend anyone who picks up this book to have a solid foundation of neuroanatomy first, or else it will be a struggle to get through a chapter. The return process was quite easy and the rental company was very helpful for me. :)

Not your typical textbook, be sure to try a sample of this item before you buy because many of the authors within use Neuroscience jargon as if speaking to a fellow researcher when describing their specialty areas.Also, I read these kinds of books for fun, but some Instructors may find that it can serve as a good supplement to many biology, bioethics, neural science, neuroscience, and psychology courses BUT lacks the organization and fluidity one should expect from a textbook.

I am a urologist specializing in neurologically impaired patients so I read Kandels newest edition once they become available. This edition is superb with colorful and easily understood illustrations, diagrams and radiology studies including PET scans. The print is very legible and the spacing is perfect. It took a month to read the 1700 pages but its the best book i have read these last 10 years with Bruce Alberts Molecular Biology of the Cell whose 6th edition should be out later this year. I really found the molecular biology and anatomy chapter the perfect reintroduction for me. It provided me with the perfect detail and understanding for a paper I am writing on Strokes and their Effect on the Bladder. The disease specific Chapters on Stroke, Parkinsons, Multiple Sclerosis each are well detailed but with excellent explanations of the principles necessary for the clinician to get a strong hold on this relevant material. These chapters should be standard reading for all medical students and residents. The radiological studies chosen to illustrate these disease entities are the best i have seen and explain what is important to know and understand for each type of stroke, progressive MS or non progressive MS. I purchased it early after its release new for 70 dollars so with its success it will soon be a classic at 100 plus dollars and will still be worth every penny. I will now use this to teach my students the fundamentals of a neurological exam and to emphasis the commonly seen neurological disease seen by urologists. Thank you Dr Kandel for a book well worth the 7 year wait.

I have a degree in chemistry. I found it to be an important addition to my library. Book covers the basic chemistry such as amines and other biochemistry in the brain. From my perspective, the biology is understandable and touches upon aspects of normal functioning and abnormal aspects such as mental illness. About the Author

DIANA SOUTHWOOD KENNEDY went to Mexico in 1957 to marry Paul P. Kennedy, the foreign correspondent for the New York Times. In 1969, at the suggestion of Craig Claiborne, she began teaching Mexican cooking classes and in 1972 published her first cookbook. She has been decorated with the Order of the Aztec Eagle, the highest honor bestowed on foreigners by the Mexican government. She lives much of the year in her ecological adobe house in Michoacan, Mexico, which also serves as a research center for Mexican cuisine.

I’m attempting to cook my way through this a la Julia and Julie. The Masa Fantasies chapter is worth the price of the book. I’ve made all but the recipes calling for jellied pigs feet and calves brains(I’m sure they are great; but some biases are difficult to overcome.). My favorite is the Panuchos.Next up: the tortillas chapter.

Ms. Kennedy writes the recipes in her book clearly, and I have found them generally easy to follow. She does a good job of highlighting regional flavors in the book, and provides a broad scope of ingredients and dishes. I jump back to this book quite often in search of ideas for meal planning. For the most part, I'm an experimental cook, and The Essential Cuisines of Mexico provides a good framework to play around in.

Better reserves for advanced cooks. Too complicated and complex for novices. No pictures or sketches to show what the end recipe should look like, and some ingredient lists are vague, ie "chicken" ?? How much?

I was looking for a gift for a friend that loves cooking and likes Mexican food. This book caught my attention while reading from the "look inside" option.I am from Mexico City and I have lived in the US for 10+ years. Fortunately there are amazing cookers in my family so I can always call someone back home whenever I am unsure about a recipe, or whenever I crave for something I haven't had in a looong time and just saw in a movie. Sometimes my relatives that live near me will correct me without me having to ask them for help because they saw I was about to make the awful mistake of not boiling the tomatoes first or because I was about to use the wrong pepper... 'Even when I can translate for my friends the recipes they ask me for, sometimes I just don't know how to explain certain details to them. It is even harder when some of those friends have never been anywhere in Mexico, because they don't have any reference point to compare good from not-so-good to bad Mexican food.What I am trying to say is that I know as a fact that it is not easy to find reliable books written in English for explaining Mexican food. And while I was reading through the selected pages in the "preview" of this book, I got a big smile on my face, and -to tell you the truth- I also felt very nostalgic. The author describes with such a good recollection of details places where I've been and food I've ate that I just started craving for all those places and foods out of sudden.I bought the book and when it got to my house I devoured it within days. I started making bookmarks, and to highlight information I found helpful. I did not know for example that "Cazuelas ... are not suitable for an electric burner" (page 460). That explained to me why I had ruined mine 10 years ago.Well, I like the book so much that I decided to keep it... I bought another copy for my friend (she loves it too!).This book has given me the ability to transport to so many different places without having to leave my own kitchen at home! I am planning on buying few more copies as I can, and give them as a Christmas or birthday presents for some of my other friends that love cooking, and have a tooth for Mexican flavors. BTW, my husband (he is American) has been cooking some of the recipes in this book and he loves them! He has mentioned to me: this taste like that dish we ate when we were on so-and-so place in Oaxaca; these taste like the tacos we ate at the mercado near you mom's house!

This is a very good update to Diana Kennedys Essential Cusines. It contains some new recipes and follows her pattern of giving the place or name of whoever contributed the recipe. It is very complete, authentic and reliable. She really knows her subject. The only complaint I have is that sometimes she lists ingredients that are impossible to find. The other problem is the size of the recipe, as sometimes it seems it for a bunch of people. However these are not that important and I highly recommend this cookbook.

`The Essential Cuisines of Mexico' is Diana Kennedy's Mexican answer to Julia Child's `Mastering the Art of French Cooking'. It has a similar style and quality and, like Child's encounter with French cooking, it came about as a result of her marriage to a husband who was posted to Mexico by his newspaper, `The New York Times' as their Caribbean / Mexican correspondent. This, plus a little help from New York Times colleague and friend, Craig Claiborne lead Ms. Kennedy to start teaching Mexican cooking and prompting her to write a book on the subject.There are two big differences between this book and Ms. Child's `magnum opus'. The first is that this volume is an amalgam of three earlier books, while `...French Cooking' was a distillation from a manuscript at least twice the size of the final published volume. The second major difference is that while Ms. Child is documenting `cuisine bourgeois', Ms. Kennedy is looking at Mexico's `cuisine provincial'. This is highlighted by the fact that the geographical home of all recipes is cited, and the geographic specifics are given for all the major ingredients cited in the appendix.The three earlier books being combined here are `The Cuisines of Mexico', `The Tortilla Book', and `Mexican Regional Cooking'. The author also states that some new material has been added to the recipes from these three books. To my eye, the integration of the three volumes is seamless. The author and her editors have not simply pasted the three volumes together, they have merged all the material to create a single work easily superior to the original three.By the time this book was published, it should be evident to the English speaking world at large that Ms. Kennedy has some serious competition from Chicagoan, Rick Bayless in the world of Mexican culinary authorities. Just as Ms. Kennedy presents recipes very similar to fellow amateur Julia Child and fellow `culinary archeologist' Paula Wolfert, chef Bayless does a much more analytical approach to Mexican cuisine, deconstructing dishes into their component parts in `Rich Bayless' Mexican Kitchen' and giving us multiple versions of important dishes in `Mexico One Plate at a Time'.In spite of these differences, Ms. Kennedy and Mr. Bayless agree on virtually everything important when they address the same subjects. The most important point on which they agree is the central place of Oaxaca as, to coin a phrase, the Provence of Mexican cuisine. On which author to prefer, if you are a fan of Mexican dishes, buy both authors, bypassing the earlier books which were folded into the current volume and also bypassing Mr. Bayless' `Salsas That Cook' as there is some overlap with `Rick Bayless's (sic) Mexican Kitchen'. If you are a culinary professional, Mr. Bayless may be just a bit more useful. If you simply want lots of good recipes, go with Ms. Kennedy. Also, Ms. Kennedy probably has the edge when it comes to giving recipes for Mexican baking, as that is one of her special interests. And, if that is where your strongest interest lies, go for her latest book, `From My Mexican Kitchen'. On which writer is more `authentic' I am taking it on faith that both authors are incredibly faithful to the tastes and the spirit of the Mexican originals while being very considerate of their gringo audience's kitchen equipment and skills.The one thing about which one may be disappointed in this book, based on the title, is that there is very little discussion of general regional differences. There is not even a dusty little map of Mexico and its regions. This is surprising in that, for example Penelope Casas includes a map of Spanish regions in all her major cookbooks and Diane Kochilas includes one in her excellent book on Greek cuisines. And, both authors give us recipes by region. Ms. Kennedy's omission is doubly puzzling as chef Bayless' first book, `Authentic Mexican' opens with a very good map of Mexican regions. This, of course, is only important if you are really interested in regionality, as when you plan to travel to Mexico. If all you want is recipes, this consideration is of no importance.Following the model of her spiritual mentor, Julia Child, Ms. Kennedy's recipes are exceptionally well written. To those of us for whom this is important, note that all volumetric measurements are given in both English and metric units. And, Ms. Kennedy's admonition on careful measurement, regardless of the unit, is well taken. In spite of the fact that these are interpretations of very provincial recipes, Ms. Kennedy goes to great lengths to add warnings and suggestions regarding what can be prepared in advance, what should be served immediately, and what can be refrigerated or frozen safely, without loosing flavor or texture.This book is not compulsively chatty, if that is something which annoys you. Many recipes have short headnotes, but not all recipes do. The overall book is organized by type of recipe, which makes it ideal for quick reference. In that regard, it is much better than Mr. Bayless PBS tie-in volumes. I went directly to the egg recipe chapter and was greeted immediately with the familiar `Huevos Rancheros', only to discover that Ms. Kennedy does anticipate Mr. Bayless a bit (and copies her Julia Child model as well) by separating the Salsa Ranchera recipe from the egg recipe with citations in the Salsa recipe for the dishes in which it is used.I do not miss pictures in cookbooks, but if you do, go for Bayless' first book, `Authentic Mexican'. Otherwise, if you simply need Mexican recipes, pick this book first, especially as Ms. Kennedy is a better and more engaging writer than chef Bayless in his first book. My only real regret with this book is that there is no `analytical' listing of recipes by Mexican region. Otherwise, this is a real classic!

This book has a lot of great information and recipes, but I find a lot of recipes to be vague. I am a professional chef and sometimes even I'm not clear on exactly what she means or how much of something to use.

I have not read the "adult" version of this book, but this one is a bit too shallow and the author tends to jump too much from subject to subject.

I'm hooked on this writer. I bought the book because I was interested in the periodic table, but this writer brings the subject to life. It's a perfect introduction to the elements of children about to begin their study of chemistry, but also for those of us who spent years in chem labs and thought we knew it all. Interestingly enough, I found to my amazement that Sam Kean also wrote the violinist's thumb, and the dueling neurosurgeons, two other books that I found fascinating. When his other book is available, I'll buy it too......
