If you want to pass the ACCUPLACER Math test, this is the book to buy! It explains all the math problems in a way that's easy to understand. Every important step is well laid out and explained. So if you're not great at math, this book will sharpen your math skills and enable you to pass the test easily. Take it from me coz I hate math and I'm not great at it. But after committing myself to studying this book, I ended up passing the test on my first try and got the score I needed to take college level math classes. One more thing. Study the whole book AND also practice with the College board's ACCUPLACER Practice tests that are available online (google & search for the online Practice test App). The online practice tests are very helpful, and depending on your school, there may be ACCUPLACER practice tests customized for your school on the website. Check the available options when you log on to the website. But even if you do find practice tests that are customized for your school, still study every topic in the book. I was thrown off by some unexpected questions from topics that my school did not list on the College Board ACCUPLACER Practice test website/online app. Overall, what I will say is this: Get the book, you'll be glad you did!

So far I love this book. I have been mainly focusing on Arithmetic and Elementary Algebra in hopes to increase my score and skip extra math classes. With the score I have now (from previously taking the accuplacer) I would have to do an extra year of just math classes to get into the Chemistry class I need to take. I scored college level in every other part of the accuplacer exept math. I hate math, (or as Daniel Tiger would say, I very very very much dislike it) but this book really breaks everything down and makes it easier to understand. I am becoming more comfortable with math and when I do something wrong it does a great job explaining why. I take the test in roughly two weeks and have been studying roughly an hour-two a day for a week now. I also plan on taking the practice tests in the book and on the Accuplacer website once I'm done studying. I need to score a 76 in Elementary Algebra and luckily my state has no rules (besides you cant take the test two times the same day) so I set up a 'back up' test for the following week in case I don't get the score I need, but I'm hoping to get it the first try. I will update my review after I take the test whether I passed or not. Happy studying! 😊

I am very satisfied with how this book is organized and how concepts are explained. I purchased this so I wouldn't have to waste time grinding through several chapters of things I either already knew or didn't need to know. I was able to go through the CLM content easily in a few days. Everything is concise and the ideas progress smoothly. Overall one of the best test prep books I've used, will definitely buy from Barron's again.

Trying to go back to college in my 50's is a daunting task and remembering math from almost30 years ago is now made accomplish-able! No need to guess on the math placement test! This book is a step-by-step recipe for success in re-learning math from the basics to college-level. Have not needed a tutor yet and I am almost done with the book into College Level now!

This book does not include geometry because it is not on the Accu placer exam. That being said, I am two copies because each of my teens absolutely love this book. This book does a good job of reviewing and my children have both taken personal notes in their copy and plan to use it to (partially) study for the ACT later. My first child got 112 on her elementary algebra accuplacer and technically tested into pre-calculus. My second child is expecting to take her test soon :-)

This is the best math textbook I have ever used. Years of kids in school and state-of-the art "new math" textbooks filled with colorful sidebars and highlighted boxes make this simple, straightforward approach to math refreshing. More importantly, it contains the best instructions for how to solve problems I have ever found. Even though it's intended as a review to prepare you for the test, it could easily replace every math textbook we have ever used.

I really can't say enough about this book. In a nutshell, it really helped me avoid remedial classes that would've taken another year to complete. The first time I took the dreaded TSI Math exam (Accuplcer Math) I scored below 350 (350 or higher is needed for placement in college level mathematics). One night while searching for online resources, I found this book here on Amazon. Let me tell you first off ... This book will not pass the test for you,you have to put in the work and "study every night". That's exactly what I did, I studied every night. I developed a lesson plan that scheduled the progression of every chapter in the book with progression. I used color coded tabs for every chapter and created a check-off list to mark my progression. In there words, I treated this book as if it was an actual class. I had to make time, every day to study for at least 1 hour and as I completed the lesson for that day, I would check it off my list. I literally went through at least 3/4 of the entire book before I took that horrible test again. The book has practice tests with answer keys so you can practice. This book is without question "all you need to pass" BUT like I said earlier ... You must make time and study the material. I closing, if you need help with Accuplacer Math, this book is exactly what you need. It has everything you need to improve your math skills and will time and effort, you'll be well on your way to register for that college level math course you need. Btw ... I just graduated from college in August 2018 and @ 45 years old, I really can't say how greatful I am to the developers of this Accuplacer Math Study Book. I did put in alot of study time, but it was all worth it. The price of the book versus the price of remedial classes (not to mention the added semesters these classes would require) this book is worth it's weight in gold. I wish you the absolute best with your studies and stay positive ... The help you need is in this book.

However unlike most books this one does not provide solutions for said problems. In investigating further on line, I found that The author purposefully omits the answers because the questions are the same as found in his coursera course.If the book was marketed as a companion to his coursea course, then that would be ok i suppose. However, the lack of solutions makes this book far less practical in my opinion. Would it have been so hard for the author to come up with the distinct problems for the book?Because of the ommission, I have to mark it down to two stars

Seriously... his algorithms courses on Coursera completely changed the way I looked at and thought about problems and concepts in computer science. The theoretical foundations he helped me establish even assisted me in landing my dream job straight out of university at one of the world's largest tech companies!In my four years of undergrad computer science education I never once had a professor who was able to clearly distill the essence of algorithms and data structures, or even instill the motivation for why it's so important to master these concepts in the way that Roughgarden did.What I loved the most about his teaching style was being walked through a curated list of the "greatest hits" of computer science while being shown what it was about those key insights about a certain algorithm or technique that could be exploited in a more general form to solve whole classes of similar problems. I think this is one of the things I've noticed lacking in a lot of modern education; the primitives are taught, but usually in an unimaginative format, and the mindset/ability to compose those primitives to solve more complex problems is never really cultivated.My only advice for anyone working through this book is to have patience and be persistent. This style of analysis/thinking may be very different than what you're used to if your experience in the education system was anything like mine in North American public schools - but it will pay off. Roughgarden even recommends referring to the free lecture notes of Mathematics for Computer Science in the beginning of the book if you need a refresher. You can also find forums where you can discuss math topics all over the internet, use them!I will be recommending this book to anyone who's looking to establish a more rigorous understanding of the foundational concepts of computer science. I'm confident that this series will eventually become known as one of the "greatest hits" in computer science literature : )

Like many people I’ve taken Tim’s algorithms course. It’s an excellent course so I bought the book sight unseen. I was a bit bummed to see no coverage of graph algorithms or dynamic programming. The book is listed in parts so that shouldn’t come as a surprise.If you’re looking for specific material be sure to check the table of contents to see that it will be covered.Overall, I can’t wait for more editions to be released.

I think that the book provides a great introduction to the topic, and I quite like how the author strikes the balance between theory and illustration of the concepts using concrete examples. That said, there is one major issue with this book -- the problems at the end of each chapter are essentially useless as there are no answers or even hints to verify that you have actually understood the topic. I find it particularly funny that the author calls these sections 'Test Your Understanding' and then does not provide the answers (what? :).To be fair, you could ask for a hint in the discussion forum of the book, e.g. "I'm thinking that I should do x,y,z to solve the problem. Am I right?", but you will never know the final answer. The reason for such a policy is that the author also has a Coursera class and uses problems from the book there. Downside: I guess you will have to pay for the certificate version of the class to know the answers to the problems. Upside: it is helpful to watch him present the material on Coursera and then double down by reading the book.In the end, I wish there was an explicit disclaimer about this situation. I hope that later issues of the book (and later books in the sequence) will have an independent set of problems.

I took a graduate course on algorithms recently but I had not studied algorithms or data structures in years. I quickly realized that I remembered less than I thought I had. I used this book (and some of the videos from Dr. Roughgarden's class at Stanford) to get up to speed. His explanations are surprisingly clear and easy to understand. I would recommend this book and the forthcoming volumes for an introductory class or as a refresher for grad students/professionals.

EDIT: The book does come with all solutions, see the comment under the review.Good book, but to learn algorithms, you have to do lots of practice! At the ends of each chapter, he has a few questions, but only 1 or 2 of these questions have answers to them. The VAST majority of questions don't have answers, so how are you supposed to know if you understand or not???Here's the kicker: To get the answers to all the questions, you have to pay $50 a month to take his course on Cousera. Thus this book serves as a way to get people to pay for this cousera course. A scam! This book should be enough to stand on its own, not to lure people into paying $50 a month for an online course.On the plus side, however, are the videos that the author provides. They are very helpful and are free online.

Tim Roughgarden pulls off the seemingly impossible. He actually teaches. The book closely follows the online course which is completely worth taking. The programming assignments are surprisingly challenging mostly because of the size of the datasets. The implementation has to be really tight, and even the language used matters. In some imaginary world every subject would have a Tim.

When I saw Romeo & Juliet in the theatre -- on its opening weekend -- after the film in the lobby I saw dozens of teenaged girls sobbing in each other's arms. I've never seen anything like that before or since. That alone marks the film as a masterpiece, and nothing any critic can say is relevant next to that emotional reaction. Those sobbing teenagers are absolute proof that any critic who panned this film is a fool.Di'Caprio wasn't very famous at that point (though I believe he'd already been nominated for an oscar for an indy film). Later that night, I had dinner with friends and predicted that this boy would become the biggest star in Hollywood -- by tomorrow! I was off by a couple of years. Rare in film history has there been such a perfect casting -- Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo. The mythical balcony scene is freshly designed and executed wonderfully, bringing the myth to life before our eyes. But the crowning glory and superpower of this film is the 'love at first sight' scene - ironic in that there are no words spoken (words being Shakespeare's superpower). It's all done with the eyes by the two young genius actors, combined with inspired camera work and the devastating vocal performance of Des'ree. This is one of the most beautiful, greatest, and most powerful scenes in cinematic history.What is this emotion -- love at first sight? It might only happen two or three times in our entire lives. It isn't real love. So is it just trivial, adolescent silliness? I think it is much more than that -- and so did Shakespeare. What is our emotional relationship with our desires that can never be? We're haunted forever by the impossiblity of perfect love as much as we were ever thrilled by the fantasy of it. Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo & Juliet' taps deeply into the impossible longings that never leave us. It is a masterpiece.

As an English teacher, teaching Shakespeare can be quite a challenge. For modern students, trying to connect the concepts, theme, and setting of Romeo and Juliet can be quite a challenge. Keeping them engaged in the struggle of Shakespearean language is even more so. This version of the play is accurate and most importantly, entertaining. We, as a class, will read a portion of the play and then I will show this film to help cement ideas, dialogue, and characters. The students love the film, laugh, and respond better to the play than without!

I did not want to see this movie for years after its release. I consider myself a purist where the Bard of Avon is concerned. I adored the films Henry V & Much Ado About Nothing, both directed and starring Kenneth Branaugh, Richard III starring and directed by Olivier. Period costumes, true to Shakespeare's lines, etc. I began to change when I realized (fairly early on in watching it) that 10 Things I Hate About You, was a delightful retelling of The Taming Of The Shrew. Eventually I watched this and found a gem. From the factions portrayed as rival gangs, to the outstanding delivery of the lines. The true crowning jewel is the over the top performance by the inimitable John Leguizamo. As Tibalt, John is amazing.

I really love this book. It made understanding a lot easier for my students. ~BUT~ I will say that some parts are a little much. It seems the translator looks for the most vulgar way to word some of Shakespeare's crude jokes (Shakespeare is crude, to be sure--and some of it is quite funny. However, sometimes the translator goes too far the other way). Plus, there were parts that weren't necessarily as sexual in the original as it was presented in the translated version (like scenes that were purposely left ambiguous so that it might have been interpreted in more than one way). This actually took away from the cleverness and thoughtfulness of some of Shakespeare's jokes.Because of this, I had to pre-read all the scenes to choose which scenes we read in this book, and which ones we read from the original text (from the textbook, where students couldn't read the translation). I did find, however, that the classes that used BOTH original and translated readings for the unit had an easier time understanding the original text when challenged to do so (likely because they didn't feel as overwhelmed from days of old text).This is a very useful tool for the classroom. Both versions are important--and, truthfully, some of my students preferred the original text, and some preferred the new text, so switching between the two for certain scenes was a great exercise.

This is such a great reimagining of the Shakespearean play. My students love this version and it keeps their attention with the fast-paced plot, colorful scenes, and flashy costumes. However, this edition is the NEW Music edition of the DVD, so there are added bonuses to this new disc. The music edition features a 45 minute documentary of how they picked the songs that were used in the movie. Twenty years after this film came out, my students are still singing along with some of the songs--they were the perfect choices and were timeless songs (and hey, if my students know Prince's "When the Doves Cry" more than 30 years after the song's initial release, yes, it is timeless).My DVD did not look like the photo (the cover is a bit different, although it does say "Music Edition") but I bought it for the movie and not for the cover. If you are a fan of this version of the movie and you don't have the music edition, you need this one. If you're just a Romeo and Juliet fan and have (gasp!) never seen this 1996 version, go ahead and take a chance. You'll love it.

Recommend you cross reference at least some of the "walks" with other sources and maps. I bought this book for a short trip to the Dolomites in late May. And because we were only in the mountains for 2 days, we only tried a couple of the walks (23 and 24), so I can't really speak to the accuracy of any of the other hikes. The Dolomites are spectacular! We are not inexperienced hikers and the weather was perfect during our trip. But this book only vaguely mentions in the front to wait until July for high altitude routes, without ever noting which of the hikes include these high altitude sections. She also mentions up front that many of the walks may include sections with iron cables that don't necessarily require special equipment. The walks we happened to select were both high altitude and were recommended to use via ferrata equipment (harnesses with double caribeeners for the cables plus helmets). In fact walk 23 (Lagazuoi tunnels) has a via ferrata equipment rental kiosk at the start; no mention of this in the book. We ended up doing a lot of rock scrambling and cable clinging until we had to turn around and go back due to sections of the path still being occluded by snow. To be fair, the lower sections of the trail were very clear and easy, as described in the book.My recommendation is that this book should note timetables for specific trail accessibility in each of the trail descriptions, not just at the front in the general description sections. It should also be revised to include via ferrata recommendations and warnings. From walk 24, ''...a drawn out dizzy and narrow stretch aided by cable at times. Take this slowly and watch your step..." says to me that you should be using at least some safety equipment, since you are now about 600 meters up on a very steep, rocky, treeless mountainside.In conclusion--if you plan to hike in the Dolomites, even for a very short stay, get a good Tabacco topographic map. There are an abundance of short and long trails, clearly defined for difficulty and required equipment. This book is a good introduction to the region but should not be used as a guide!

This is an excellent book for planning short hikes in the Dolomites with excellent descriptions, maps, and photos. We stayed in Cortina, Ortisei (St Ulrich), and Vigo di Fassa and used this book exclusively to plan our trip and take walks that are 2-7 hours in length. Unlike other reviewers, we found the directions adequate and also supplemented them with Google maps for driving directions. Walk 29 (Sentiero Delle Odle) was spectacular and exactly as described by the book. It was the highlight of our trip. We also enjoyed Walk 9 (the Tre Cime di Lavaredo Loop) which was equally spectacular.We found no Americans on these trails and only locals. Our hotels also didn't have much information on the hikes and told us to take the lifts and hike from there. I think the folks that rated the book low didn't pick out 1-3 hikes and take the time to map them from their hotel. If you spend the time with the book and plan your trip ahead, you will be rewarded with beautiful hikes with stunning vistas.

Great hikes, but they're generally very long (even longer when the gondolas aren't running). I think the shortest hike in this book is 4 hrs, but the hikes are generally 6-8 hrs. Don't be put off by the long circuits, because most of the hikes can always be shortened somehow--even if it's just out and back. I would use this book as a starting point to figure out where to go.

No this book is not perfect and as many have pointed out should not be considered a comprehensive stand-alone guide. That said, it is the best Dolomites guidebook out there and a great resource. I gave it 5 stars simply because on a relative scale, it is the best guidebook out there.I strongly recommend also buying a 1:25,000 Tobacco topo map. Although the trails are exceedingly well marked and the book has pretty good maps, there is no substitute for a real map. Maps are around 7€ in Italy. Many of the routes are simple, but if you try one of the more difficult routes with few people on the trail, you will want to have a map to double check your route. I also carry a off-line map GPS app on my iPhone (Pocket Earth) which is very helpful to triple check location and route.

This is written by someone who obviously speaks English as a second language. Therefore, it is frequently confusing. Following route directions requires a great degree of geographically analytical prowess. The times cited for completing hikes are only accurate if one walks at a fast pace (such as 3 miles per hour or more) and one should expect to increase the time to complete a hike by 50% to 100%. Most importantly, there are no useful maps provided; maps are often provided but are grossly absent of needed information. It should be easy enough to at the very least label the map with the corresponding route numbers along the course.

This was our go to resource while we hiked the Dolomites. Very useful when we did an entire hike from it... great directions. Also useful for figuring out what to potentially check out when going to an new area. BTW, the Dolomites are magical place... if you are into mountain trekking you should definitely check it out.

If you are searching for short walks in the Dolomites- this is the book you need. Covers the pluses and minuses well. Of course, you must expect that the information, not matter how recent is dated. So it is best to arrive with a plan and perhaps, be ready to modify it on arrival based on new information, weather availability of lodging. Overall a great compendium for planning- used the electronic version=- fine!

Although well organized, I found the book to have incomplete maps. I wish the writer had included points that were nearby even if not directly relevant to the hike she described. When on hikes, you invariably need nearby info and it was lacking. However, it did give insight to different regions and ideas for hikes. It was handy to have on our person during our five days in the Dolomites
