One of the great feats of being a small business owner -- besides being part of the backbone of America's economy -- is that one gets to spend evenings reading books and magazines about organizational management and other business topics in a continuous effort to improve one's own skills.Or so the theory goes. Yours truly, in fact, prefers to read about philosophy and history and would consider Plato to be the best organizational guru there ever was. Preferred self-help works include Dante's "Divine Comedy" and Boethius' "Consolation of Philosophy". But occasionally, nudged by the missus, I'll open up one of the works on her growing list of recommendations and start reading. So it happened that I bumped into "Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us" by Daniel Pink. In this book the author argues that how the vast majority of companies are motivating their workers "extrinsically" is completely outdated in our modern economy: "They continue to pursue practices such as short-term incentive plans and pay-for-performance schemes in the face of mounting evidence that such measures usually don’t work and often do harm." These monetary rewards, Pink writes, "can deliver a short-term boost — just as a jolt of caffeine can keep you cranking for a few more hours. But the effect wears off — and, worse, can reduce a person's longer-term motivation to continue the project." In today's world, the author argues, folks are motivated intrinsically. You leave them to their own devices, don't burden them with sticks and carrots, and the creativity will start flowing like the Mississipi River. This book is certainly interesting. The author puts forth a straightforward argument and provides ample research to back up his thesis, some of it eye-opening. Who would guess that young children are more motivated to produce a drawing if they are not expecting a reward after the fact? In another example, "researchers at Cornell University studied 320 small businesses, half of which granted workers autonomy, the other half relying on top-down direction. The businesses that offered autonomy grew at four times the rate of the control-oriented firms and had one-third the turnover."It all sounds solid enough, though the question arises which companies are being investigated here. Are these Cornell researchers comparing start-ups run by fresh college grads in Silicon Valley to the McDonald's in Pleasant Hill, Iowa? Or are we talking about similar industries in order to level the playing field? As mentioned above, this reviewer owns a small business himself -- though not of the glamorous kind -- and gets the sense that Pink's head exists in a bubble of Facebook, Apple, Uber and other innovative tech giants. His examples of companies motivating their employees the 'correct' way -- Atlassian (software), 3M, Netflix, Zappos.com, JetBlue, Facebook and more such companies -- suggest as much. Pink has little to say about the unmotivated piece of work fixing your sub over at the gas station, or about the housekeeper cleaning your hotel room at the La Quinta during your April Florida vacation. The author himself would deny this, of course, and in his defense, he does briefly address the issue of non-creative repetitive labor: "Whether you’re fixing sinks, ringing up groceries, selling cars, or writing a lesson plan, you and I need autonomy just as deeply as a great painter." But, he continues, the majority of us will at first struggle when thrown into the deep waters of "undiluted autonomy", and hence "Organizations must provide ... 'scaffolding' to help every employee find his footing to make the transition." Fair enough, but what does this "scaffolding" entail in a practical sense? It doesn't become very clear from proceeding through Pink's pages.Next follow some Rousseauian observations about human nature that the grand master of philosophical folly could himself have whipped up: "We're designed to be Type I [motivated by intrinsic desires]. But outside forces -- including the very idea that we need to be 'managed' -- have conspired to change our default setting and turn us into Type X [motivated by extrinsic desires]. If we update the environments we're in -- not only at work, but also at school and at home -- and if leaders recognize both the truth of the human condition and the science that supports it, we can return ourselves and our colleagues to our natural state." And, quoting a researcher on the topic: "The course of human history has always moved in the direction of greater freedom. And there's a reason for that -- because it's in our nature to push for it."I'm sorry, but human history is not moving unstoppably towards greater freedom any more than I, employer, am suppressing my workers' creative nature by setting deadlines and doling out incentives. What is happening here is that we in the West have arrived at an utter anomaly in human history in which the battle for basic subsistence has been won (for now) and that we are at liberty to enjoy the unprecedented luxuries brought forth by science, technology and the arts. It is certainly true that these fields are driven forward by man's intrinsic curiosity and desire to create new things, and the fact that they have thrust our civilization -- if not humanity at large -- to great heights should instill an enormous dose of gratitude and humility in us.But back down on Earth, real goods still need to be produced, not just dreamed up by hipster types: Oil and gas need to be pumped to the surface, corn and wheat have to be harvested, cars need to be assembled, hotel rooms need to be cleaned, restaurant meals have to be cooked, and homes need to be built. Much of the production of these goods revolves around basic, repetitive tasks and invokes a certain level of dread and boredom. From my personal experience, the majority of workers involved want to work just enough hours for their paycheck to hold them over to the next one (and who can blame them?). The successful completion of their tasks is contingent upon a supervisor setting clear expectations, checking for quality of work after the fact, and showing gratitude for good behavior by continuing the employment relationship and handing out a nice paycheck.None of this is to say that “Drive” isn't worth your valuable time. As with many such works, one takes a few good ideas and runs with them. While I can't afford to allow my employees to spend twenty percent of their time brainstorming about new products or process improvements, there's nothing stopping me from empowering them to have a say in how things are done in my company. So how about coming together for a half-day plenary session every three months and allow the staff to blurt out any idea that might have popped up in their head? I might just give it a try. With all this in mind, I would recommend this book to certain types of readers, such as consultants, employers or the budding and dreaming entrepreneur. Just don't expect to be blown away by every word you're reading.

Daniel Pink gives us the low-down on motivation and the contrast between what business believes to work and what science proves works.Pink breaks down motivation into different versions. Motivation 1.0 is our basic need of survival. It's the simplest level of motivation and there isn't much time spent on this topic.Motivation 2.0 is what Pink believes to be an outdated model. This is what is referred to as "carrots and sticks." We use these tools to encourage or reinforce positive behaviors and to curb behaviors we want to eliminate.Pink shows, through research and studies, that adding monetary incentives does not inspire us like many have believed. It only serves as a temporary boost but winds up fading fast.Instead, Pink believes we need to move to Motivation 3.0. This is where we are inspired by internal drivers rather than external factors. There are three main themes to 3.0 with autonomy, mastery and purpose. These are the driving factors that need to be fostered in order to motivate us. Companies employing ROWE, results-only work environments, have shown statistically that Motivation 3.0 works.Pink weaves in his book the findings of other noted authors and books in this same line of study like Dweck's Mindset, Csikszentmihalyi's Flow, Duckworth's work on Grit, along with work by Deci, Deming, Drucker, Kahneman, Gladwell, Godin, and many others. This book receives a 4.4 rating on Amazon after 1,039 reviews. Goodreads gives this one a 3.95 after 60,238 ratings and 3,131 reviews. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it.#FridaysFind #MIAGD #DanielPink #Drive

I gotta be honest, I expected more from this book, especially with all the reviews. In a nutshell, it tells you that people are driven by the need for fulfillment. It makes a valid point that we want to feel important at our job and in our life, but the rest of it is just fluff. I also found it a boring and dry read.I read "It's Okay to be the Boss" after this book and found it to be IMMENSELY better and effective (I've been practicing the teachings of "It's Okay to be the Boss" for a couple weeks now and have already seen many positive effects.) In terms of readability and effectiveness, I'd recommend "It's Okay to be the Boss" over this one 1000 times. (100% not a paid review btw. Honest opinion.)

Drive was an interesting read, definitely a 'Leadership' / 'self-improvement' type book. However, it did become repetitive and it lost my attention about half way through. I would consider this an airport book - something you pick up to read because you are bored, but not a must have or a re-read book. You aren't going to walk away from this book with any new TRUTHs.Hope this review was helpful! Let me know if you have any questions!

One of my favorite books of all time is the Forgotten Soldier, it's the standard I measure other personal accounts to and there's been few that have matched it. Have to say this one did it. Blood Red Snow is fabulous! The opening was nice but honestly headed for a weak 4 star rating; I think this was partially because Gunter was either finding himself in writing or had written that section well after the war. What happened during the retreat from Stalingrad though just totally opened Gunter up to us and gave us so much more than so many personal account give; emotion and feeling, fear and joy. As we Gunter both breakdown somewhat and become a stalwart of his unit we see him become so much more. This isn't just a former soldier telling his contributions to a greater fight; instead it becomes more personal, as in you almost feel Gunter is telling you his experiences in person. This is a very good account of a warrior's experience, an absolute must for anyone interested in personal accounts from WWII.

This is a superb account by a German soldier highly decorated who somehow managed to endure and survive brutal front line battles on the Russian front with only 6 mostly minor battle wounds. Written in the first person from notes he kept, the book portrays the horrors and deprivations the German soldiers faced as they pushed eastward forward Stalingrad only to somehow avoid encirclement on the slow fighting withdrawal back to the west. I could not put this book down and finished it over a three day weekend. Read it and you will not be disappointed as history comes alive through the eyes of a German heavy machine gunner who tells his story of survival and combat.

My objective was to get a perspective of the war on the eastern front during WWII and to obtain a first hand knowledge of what it was like to be a soldier during WWII since many US veterans were reluctant to talk about their experience. As part of the eastern front experience, I wanted to know if there was any disclosure of how the civilian and military Russians were treated by the Germans since the Russians didn't treat the German civilians very well. The book met my objectives. The author does a great job of taking the reader through the learning experience of how to stay alive while being a foot soldier on the front lines. I loved the book for it provided me with a much better understanding of how difficult was to be a soldier both physically and mentally.

This is the daily journal of a German soldier on the Eastern Front. It was published shortly after World War II. I found it very fascinating about what the German soldiers went through and how they reacted to a German soldiers’ life. The life is not embellished and the author simply told what went on during battles and the daily life. He seems to avoid any political talk and opinions. He sees both sides as human beings recognizing the good and bad in all whom he encounters. He enters the war as a very young soldier and he and his fellow soldiers are quite excited about getting into battle to do harm to the enemy but after their first encounter in the war zone those thoughts disappear and they all become set on just surviving. As they survive each day they are resigned to the fact that this day may be their last but still they move on under horrendous conditions especially the fierce cold.

I often wondered about the ordinary soldiers - irrespective of which army or country they fought for - who toiled anonymously and were sacrificed as pawns in their country's adventures into "aggressive political change". Growing up with books by Sven Hassel and watching war movies like Peckinpah's classic "The Cross of Iron", then delving more into the historical and propaganda footage from the German side, you start to see detail and get a glimpse into the difficulties and hardships that these men endured...but nothing like the memoirs of this amazing man and his comrades which surpasses the suffering and unfolding catastrophe that defies our imagination. A tremendous read that puts the "Russian Experience" into perspective and makes you wonder about how our history books were written, and that if such publications were made available in the past, then perhaps our passion for war mongering would be greatly diminished. This doesn't glorify war, but the bonds of friendship and comradeship that helped these young men survive the horror.

I started skimming past the innumerable descriptions of every skirmish or attack, but became very familiar with the types of weapons used. That part was interesting. The rest was just tragic. The author is a very sympathetic character, a simple soldier. But I found my feelings very conflicted when I started empathizing with him. The horror of Hitler’s invasion of Russia was carried out by men like these. Later in the book I flinched when he said that they were doing training in Denmark, a country most cruelly Treated by the Germans. So I forced myself to finish it, and I was just saddened by the monumental waste and destruction.

It is fascinating to read a book written from the memories of a German soldier fighting on the front line in the Eastern Campaign and surviving. It is similar to "All Quiet on the Western Front" in that so many of his fellow soldiers and school friends don't make it and both show the futility of war. Koschorrek confirms the view that soldiers fighting on a front line are not fighting for King, Fatherland, Tsar or whatever, but to keep themselves and their fellow men alive. All the grandeur and heroics of war come down to a simple fight for survival. This is now well documented but it is interesting to see the German soldier on the outskirts of Stalingrad and the difficulties he faces in both understanding where the front line is, what part he is playing in the war, and why supplies do not reach him in any rational quantity. All armies seem to be the same in the hierarchical structure of their supply lines. It was obvious all through, that he was going to survive, because he wrote the book, but it was still a very good insight into the German lines and the mindset of the German soldier. Unfortunately in the Kindle version, the maps, which should be so helpful, are difficult to read.

Bought this for a friend that's going through chemo and radiation. I highly recommend getting someone you know that's going through treatments a copy of this book. It lets them know you care, without giving them all the "pink" awareness stuff (my friend is a die-hard Harley bike rider).

Whether you are the cancer survivor, patient, or care-giver, this is a bottom-line, authoritative book that needs to be in your library. I found a copy in my cancer-treatment nutrition center -- and, after looking at it, believed it important enough to buy a copy so that I could have it as an immediate, on-going reference. Whether you are using it to ensure you are knowledgeable of actions to take while under treatment or after-treatment maintenance -- you'll get basic information and, even better, recipes. A good read. A great reference.

Book helps you seek help with your symptoms from Chemo and has good recipes to get you through. I originally got the book from the public library and decided I wanted my own copy! It is worth owning your own copy because you can go back and back to it to reread at any time of the day. Also you can pass this book when done with it to someone else who may need this type of help!

This Guide Cookbook keeps me Inspired while I go through radiation cancer treatment.

I took this book to chemo and their registered dietician was so impressed she ordered a copy for the medical center.

Very nicely written with great valuable information for cancer patients. The recipes are healthy and easy to make.

I bought this book for my daughter who came down with breast cancer. She said it has a lot of information in it and is very helpful.

This was a gift for my neighbor. I looked through the book and it looked really good to me, I hope it was for them.

SovaZone says: This is a lovely philosophy book disguised as a YA novel. I suppose all science fiction is philosophy though. At any rate, this is a heady contemplation of love, loss, and the need to belong. Leah Thomas invites us to explore these themes through the eyes of deeply flawed, deeply conflicted, deeply human (even the alien to a degree), deeply relatable characters. The concept of the alien virus is fresh and imaginative, and is eerie and creepy more so than flat-out scary--which is a good thing in a YA book. The writing is solid and beautiful. Her descriptions of character and place are vivid, and often read like poetry. Her characters’ voices are distinct and true, and the dialogue is fun to read. Humor and quirkiness in the writing help leaven the bleakness of the plot’s darker moments. One of the finest qualities of the writing is Thomas’s ability to express a profound, or, as Milo would say, “abstract” universal truth in a very simple yet elegant way, e.g., “People came and went, but love remained. It just changed faces an awful lot.” Thus she invites readers of all ages to enjoy this delicious literary feast! Yum Yum! More please!

An amazing and character-driven read. I couldn’t put it down. Leah Thomas always writes such good characters that you kind of want to wrap them in a warm blanket and hug them and protect them from the world. I really loved the sci-fi elements, its always so weird and creative. All in all, I am never disappointed by her storytelling skills

Okay...truth because it's my blog and I do what I want, I didn't like this book. I read it out of sheer determination and it took me the past week to finish. So the story concept, I think is brilliant and unique. An alien appears and inhabits the body of siblings. What a refreshing and unique concept to the Young Adult book market, sign me up. The execution was a confusing mess, that left me lost in the story line, floundering between the multiple POVs, and over all annoyed that it was so poorly done.I almost DNF-ed the book within the first chapter because the opening to this story is so confusing. I don't really understand the opening, it is a flashback, told from no one's point of view, and it definitely don't hook the reader. Next, let me tell you about my confusion with the chapter titles as it took me about 10 chapters to figure out Hank, Milo, and Ana were actually POV chapters associated with the body parts Luz inhabited. And wow was that frustrating and confusing. So after about page 75, I think surely this is looking up. Alas, I was wrong. The author then felt the need to insert relationships into the story. Why yes, an alien named Luz taking over bodies isn't enough to handle a plot on its own, lets have Ana and Hank dating people. But wait, it doesn't stop their we are going to have exploring sexuality, multiple exes appearing and friends deciding to come out to you. NO, just no...where were people to tell this author that this is too much. The story had no balance or symmetry, it was bouncing from plot line to plot line, from melt down to melt down, and it wasn't enjoyable because during all of the this, the main story was washed away.Overall, it was just too much crammed into a book to make it a cohesive novel. It didn't flow and while I wanted to be left with good feels, I ultimately was just happy it was over. So excellent idea, horrid execution.

This review originally appeared on herestohappyendings.com.I honestly had no idea what I was expecting when I started reading When Light Left Us. I had read the synopsis, of course, and it kind of made me a bit more confused, and when I started the book, read through it, and finished it, I came out feeling puzzled about the whole thing.Don’t get me wrong, I did like When Light Left Us. I thought it was different and interesting, and kind of reminded me a little bit of some of my science fiction shows, but I just found it kind of hard to relate to any of the characters or really even enjoy the plot as much as I had hoped that I would. All in all, I felt kind of disappointed and unsatisfied about it, especially the ending (which still left me feeling a little perplexed).“When Luz was with them, they weren’t annoyed with one another. The understood what they’d never understood in all the years of growing up without him. The Vasquezs understood they would never entirely understand one another, and that was okay.”The Vasquez family broke apart when their father left, without goodbyes for some, leaving Maggie and her three children – Hank, Ana, and Milo – behind. Maggie is left to raise three children alone, and they all have their quirks and problems, but sometimes it’s just difficult. Then Luz comes along, and changes everything. At first, for the better, and then things go to strange, dark places, leaving lives shattered and everyone in the family feeling broken.“‘You’d be surprised at how much of a person is left behind after they go missing.'”Left trying to find themselves and repair relationships, the four of them embark on a life without Luz. Milo talks very little and swears he can only hear a loud sound in his ears, causing him to always wear headphones. Ana doesn’t sleep – she rarely blinks and refuses to close her eyes. Hank is afraid to use his own hands, which no longer feel like his own, causing him problems at school, with friends, and with basketball. Maggie doesn’t understand, and tries her hardest to make the life of her children the best she can.Throughout the book, it’s so difficult to figure out exactly what is going on. Nothing seems to be told in a timeline that would clear this up – the story essentially starts during the aftermath of when Luz is gone, and we get a glimpse into what life was like with Luz every now and again thanks to flashbacks. These are essential to the story, and reveal so much. It really leaves you guessing at what Luz actually is, who he is, etc.“‘We can call him alien because it’s life we don’t understand, and we don’t really understand the stars. But we don’t really understand the holes in the world, either. We don’t know what springs up in the deep trenches of the ocean, in the unexplored caves of the Amazon. Nobody does.'”I think part of the allure of When Light Left Us is the whole trying-to-figure-out-what-Luz-is thing. Sure, it was confusing at so many parts, but it was also intriguing and really grabs your attention. While I spent the entire book scratching my head and wondering what the heck was going on, I also couldn’t stop reading, looking for answers and devouring the writing that made this story so unique.I think that this book was a bit long, and the pacing seemed kind of off in some places – for example, the last 100 pages seemed to drag on a bit, full of information that simply didn’t answer the questions. The ending left me wanting more answers than were given, and I felt like the family issues were not resolved as clearly as they could have been. This is admittedly the first book I’ve read by Leah Thomas, and I was entranced by her writing style and thought she was able to create a family dynamic that was deep, emotional, and full of secrets, and I loved that. I am looking forward to reading her other books, including Because You’ll Never Meet Me.I wish more focus would have been placed on Luz’s origin, as well as the children’s father who kind of just upped and left the family. I also wish I would have been better able to really like the characters – I think out of all of them, the only one I truly cared for was Hank. The rest just didn’t seem deep enough, maybe? I’m not sure.If you’re a science fiction fan I would recommend this, especially if you like books that keep you guessing until the very end (because trust me, you’ll be guessing a lot throughout this book). I did enjoy it, and I’m glad I had the chance to read it. I do wish I had more positive things to say, and I wish I had been able to fall in love with the book like I had hoped I would.Another note? That cover is absolutely gorgeous.Note: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

Unlike anything you have ever read, truly captures the beauty and wonder of family, loss, and love and what it means to be human.

This book was such a wonderful experience to read.

A powerful, heart wrenching and beautiful story. I am a fan of all of Leah’s books and this one does not let me down.

A beautiful story,Well written and worth a read!

Howard Schilit, Jeremy Perler, and Yoni Engelhart subdivide their comprehensive examination of financial shenanigans into four parts:1. Earnings manipulation shenanigans;2. Cash flow shenanigans (an eye-opener);3. Key metrics shenanigans;4. Acquisition accounting shenanigans. To their credit, the authors clearly demonstrate that financial shenanigans are much more widespread that a casual observer of the corporate world would believe. Unfortunately, financial shenanigans are not limited to infamous bad apples such as Enron, Lehman Brothers, Tyco, Valeant Pharmaceuticals, and WorldCom, to name a few. The management teams of well-known companies such as Dell Computer, GE, Home Depot, Li & Fung, Netflix, Softbank, and Thomson Reuters have also succumbed to the temptation of embellishing their financial performance at the expense of their investors. The overall message of Messrs. Schilit, Perler, and Engelhart is that investors should assume that the urge to exaggerate the positive and hide the negative will never disappear. And where temptation exists, shenanigans often follow. For these reasons, investors are strongly encouraged to apply the ten tenets of the forensic mindset to detect accounting gimmicks and fraud in financial statements. In summary, the book under review is a must read for anyone investing in individual securities.

I regret not reading this book sooner but am immensely happy with my decision to finally take the plunge. Accounting is such a technical field that it's easy to get lost in the weeds, but Howard Schilit does a fantastic job of keeping you grounded in the aerial view while delving into detail only when it's important. I have done public company analysis for many years (including some of them as a professional financial analyst/investor) and I decided to flag each page of the book where I learned either something entirely new or a new way of looking at the eccentricities of the financial statements. The value of this book is simple: I ran out of flags because I tagged so many pages. What I found helpful (and wish the author had included more, despite the fact that every chapter had multiple) were the direct quotes from corporate filings (usually the 10-Q/K) and parsing out what words or word changes matter and why. When I read annual reports now, I am much more sensitive to slight variations in descriptions of policies, sales, or even business between companies. If I had taken more than introductory accounting courses, I don't know that this would have been so helpful. But I didn't take those accounting courses and this was a great primer in why it's important to understand the nuance and mechanics of the financial statements. The timely examples, the parsing of corporate communications, and the great structure (where early examples in the book are used later on to illustrate more complex or well-hidden frauds) make the book a good read for someone with enough education to be literate in financial statements but not enough to forensically analyse them.Needless to say I recommend the book. I already gave a copy to a coworker -- who was similarly impressed.

An updated classic. An absolute must-read for bringing some skepticism (realism?) to contrast the seemingly always positive spin that companies try to project to the market. A balance of theory and quantitative tips & tricks to dig a bit deeper when looking at financial statements. Definitely goes into the 'how and why'.Do by the hardback edition; it will likely stay close at hand, durability being a help.

This books1) states that practically any line from Income / Balance / Cash Flow statement can be manipulated and2) proves the point by providing ton of examples of how manipulation is done in practice.Must read by everyone who believes that s/he can understand 10-K reports.

Be wary of your CFO telling to capitalize operating expenses. Be wary of firms that switch operating metrics that they report (our monthly average users dropped this Q, so we're going to start reporting daily average users instead! Which are up!).

What I liked the most was the succinct and interesting ways to manipulate the books and records of a business. There was nothing to say about the dislikes of the book. Thank you for your follow-up and survey.

How management is evolving with their creative shenanigans and their need to meet numbers is ever rising.God have mercy on their souls!

Excellent resource for those interested in financial manipulation. This is the 4th edition that improves with each update.

Sex Smart: How Your Childhood Shaped Your Sexual Life and What to Do About It

Review

"Dr. Zoldbrod has produced a thoughtful, informative, and in depth exploration of how childhood shapes one's sexual life in her book "SexSmart." ...Many examples throughout ...via clinical vignettes and thought provoking exercises and assessments ....This is a book and workbook in one....A great resource book to refer to those we work with, especially in the area of childhood abuse, sexual abuse, or family abuse. ...Zoldbrod reminds us of how these events impact individuals and their sexuality, sexual satisfaction, and relational satisfaction. Most importantly, Sex Smart provides hope through information, permission to explore, identifying and reframing beliefs, and assessments to improve sexuality." --Contemporary Sexuality, American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists, reviewed by Sally Valentine, Ph.D. , Contemporary Sexuality, Vol. 39, No.11, November, 2005"... Wonderful.....Refreshing." --Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, 2005, reviewed by Ursula Ofman, Psy.D."A valuable resource for anyone who wants to understand and explore the root causes of adult sexual intimacy concerns." --Wendy Maltz, M.S.W., author of The Porn Trap and The Sexual Healing Journey"SexSmart is an outstanding and extremely useful book for patients, therapists and the general public." --Leonore Tiefer, Ph.D., author of Sex is Not a Natural Act, Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, New York University School of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine."Dr. Zoldbrod's model of sexual development is the best one of its kind I've ever seen. This book will be useful not only as a self-help manual, but also as an informative guide for therapists and teachers." --Janet Shibley Hyde Ph.D., Professor of Psychology and Evjue-Bascom Professor of Women's Studies, University of Wisconsin, Madison; author of Understanding Human Sexuality

1. The fact that the author gets that our sex life is sculpted through childhood experiences and influences - in fact she's an expert in this link.2. Her straightforward approach to sexuality as something each person must define for themselves.3. Strategies for increasing your comfort for being touched - awesome list!4. The "Draw Your Body Map" exercise5. How to assess your "Sexual Perfectionism" - love that term sexual perfectionism, meaning the rigid demands we can make on ourselves and our lovers6. Her recognition of the fact that when BDSM is a rigid, fixed role in someone's sex life (as opposed to a curious exploration among many explorations), it might mean there was something terribly amiss in the power dynamic in the family.Quote from SexSmart I love:"To experience sexual ecstasy with another person (in a relationship between peers) you must let go of the controls over your body, and allow an instinctive, biological process of arousal, continuing excitement, and orgasm to occur. You need to trust the other person to take good care of you, to listen to your wishes, and to give you sexual pleasure."Thank you Dr. Zoldbrod, for this ground-breaking work that I hope someday will become common knowledge.By Staci, author of: Naked in Public: A Memoir of Recovery From Sex Addiction and Other Temporary Insanities

As a sexuality educator who works with parents on how to have conversations about sex and sexuality with their children so their children can grow into sexually healthy adults I recommend it often. I find that parents have a hard time having these conversations because of much of the internalized shame, their own experiences and beliefs about sexuality. Inevitably the parents who have the hardest time with having the conversations often have experienced the most shame or trauma in their lives. If parents can work out their own issues around sex and sexuality then they can help to heal themselves with a book like this and also give their children a better chance at being sexually healthy. Highly recommend it.

Worth way more than the price and precious bookshelf real-estate! _____Sex Smart_____How your childhood shaped your sexual life and what to do about it by Aline P Zoldbrod.I grew up angry... No, really Angry! In talking with my parents, I was grounded to my room as they had no idea what else to do with me! Once I was grounded from running, but I could still go to track practice. 'laughs'I left home to get as far away as possible for college, west coast is the farthest, I chose that one. The anger still followed. A seething rage inside, and a soft desire to connect. Am I destined to sit at the table by myself to eat? I'm trying to do what everyone else is.. why can I not seem to trap a woman into falling in love with me? I want the romance like is in the movies.. maybe I'll buy flowers, I'll try dinners, the opera, movies, bowling? maybe that will work... It didn't.I left college for graduate school. I was in the big leagues here, I was TA-ing half time with a full time load, as a Statistics TA I had a captive audience of 300 people times 10 10 week quarters to relate to someone. I'd given up hope, in my world the best way to go to a rally was to counterprotest and that is what I did. Whatever the topic was I chose the opposite and voiced way louder than anyone else. Did it get me in the School Newspaper, Yes many times, and the Op-Ed section many more times still. All with this huge disconnect. If I am being myself, expressing all this rage without hurting anyone, why am I still so ALONE?I met someone, she must be the one, quick! get engaged get married, get a dog, an apartment, a house... why am I still so ALONE?Throw in a Job, (I'm an isolated Statistician) A tour in Iraq (Iraqi Army Advisor), A divorce (marriage gone brother/sister with having and loving, but missing cherishing and holding). and Still I'm STILL SO ALONE!Having an affinity to read books that deal with sex (funny, I learned tons about it, and had little to no experience-even having been married!) _____Sex Smart_____ crossed my Amazon Recomendations. I purchased it with another 15 sex-technique-self-help-related books. Gspot this Aspot that Orgasm's galore, and I cracked the cover!Having made journaling a regular part of my life as well as meditation (anger/rage management),I was at a spot where being comfortable with aloneness was a necessary element for togetherness. Just where I needed to be to open this book. This book opened so many new paradigms of how life could be / or it would be nice for life to have been. What was the impact of: friends not being alowed at my house? my brother being my best friend vs. someone outside the family? moving 23 times by the age of 18? being in so many school systems? Knowing I didn't really have to make friends? I'd move in 6 months or less! Me being the household babysitter at the mature age of 12? Me being the oldest sibling? Living in a 'Women's Shelter' for 6 weeks at the age of 16? Loosing a father to HIV at the age of 18? Being afraid to open the refrigerator door at someone elses house? Being Grounded for weeks at a time? Getting spanked with the deal that if I didn't remind them when we got home, the punishment would double? A mother who thought it her duty to take care of the husband over her own children? Never going to a school dance or overnight function? why I am plagued with so much anxiety/excitement at approching things that are new? Each chapter dealing with what happened, what my thoughts were, how I felt about it and what I needed now as an adult. I took more than 12 months to get through this book. I found I checked out or didn't want to read anymore when I was being confronted with something I had conveiniently repressed. This is not a 'sexual techniques' book or a way to 'figure out' your partner; however, it is a book you will refer to with pleasant reflection over and over again.I wrote the questions in the beginning of the chapter in my journal and answered them before reading the text. (this also slowed me down as sometimes it would take days to recall everything I wanted to write about and my hand would hurt) I usually read a digestible chapter two to three times. Everyone of the impacts above became clear as if tearing a petal from a lotus, there is seemingly always another petal behind that one.I saw how the first three years of life(Ken Wilber's Stage I) can create torture(being the social outcast) or togetherness (such as being five years old and having a best friend that knows you better than anyone) lasting for the next ten years of life!(Stage II) How each of us has another chance as a teenager(STAGE III) for crossing a solidifying communication 'stage' (This is how the world IS and will ALWAYS BE!) and its correlation to your ability to approach life, boldly or apprehensively, as an adult.(Stage IV) One of the last opportunities for relatedness happens when you are on your own.(Stage V). For most of us this is now, with all that baggage how am I using it as a crutch or limitation on the way I create my world. All limitations in our social life impact the sexual life. How we spend time with groups, how we spend time one on one, are we accepting of our bodies and the body of our partner doing the things human bodies do, how do we think we look in other's eyes, how we catorgorize or limit people with names(is she a 10 or a 4?), and a huge one... HAVE WE DEALT WITH OUR OWN SHAME(Stage VI)? Once you are naked before another human, what is there? What can you not say or share with them? What can you not ask them? What can you not do with them? Why are you scared before them?I've asked many rhetorical questions in this review, this book has the capacity to answer all of them and more. Where are you holding out, where are you cheating yourself, where are you letting passivity or aggresiveness override assertiveness, complete, open self-expression to ask for what you want.. what you need? This book was a transformation of the principle componenets analysis of my own paradigm shift in life... oh yes take the inverse square it and take the inverse again to get the real transformation. Aside from the many reviews of Doctors, Psychologists, and the like, this book is not super-clinical, does not require a college degree, and has been and IS a phenominal resource in my simple little life.I still (naturally) become angry on occaision, and for the most part I am no longer, supplicating, passive-aggressive, or ALONE!The importance of touch presented in this book makes me want to truly share the love of 'non-sexual' touch with everyone I see. It was a catalyst that got me to finish my National Certification Exam to be a Massage Therapist as a side job. Mostly I just volunteer, as I get just as much out of it as the client does.I can only hope that _____Sex Smart_____ blesses your life in many more ways than it has blessed mine.NamasteMatt

Maybe this book would have been insightful 30 years ago, but I don't think it was "college level" even then. It didn't offer any useful advice on how to actually repair psychological damage. And the exercises always came to obvious, dogmatic conclusions. If you're an introspective person, then there probably isn't anything in this book that you haven't thought of already. I can see how it might save a little time for a therapist to hand out at the beginning of a comprehensive treatment, but it certainly isn't going to be the last (or even middle) step in the healing process. After each chapter I found myself asking, "Yes I know that, now what do I do about it!?" And then at the end of the book I thought, "This is exactly where I started."

bought this book hoping it would address anxiety and focusing to achieve orgasm. i did not relate to it as much as i had hoped

I purchased this book in the hopes it would shed some light on why my husband of 33 years has always had a very low libido. His testosterone levels are normal, and there is no physical reason. My thinking was that it must have come from his experiences growing up. It has been very hard on our marriage living with someone who seldom wants sex and is perfectly happy that way. However, the book seems to be slanted more towards women with libido problems, not men. It has a bunch of questionairres that have no validity in our case, and it also doesn't really explain what might cause this, or if there is any way to cure it. I honestly couldn't see where it would be much help to anyone, male or female, with this problem. I didn't even bother to have my husband read it, as it would have been a waste of time for him. A waste of money as far as I'm concerned.
