The poor review is for the edition and not the material. Avoid this Smith and Brown edition. As with many plays that are old enough to be in the public domain, there are numerous editions, some better than others. In fact, anyone with a Xerox machine can make their own edition of this play, and this is pretty close to that. This is the worst edition I have ever seen of a script. The formatting is ponderous and poorly done. Character names are barely differentiated from the text that they speak; Stage directions are often buried in the text with little to differentiate them. In addition, the text goes so close to the edges that one sometime needs to break open the binding just to read it. There is not introduction, no annotations, nothing of interest to make up for the fact that this edition is annoying to read. If this were the only edition available, that'd be one thing, but there are so many options. I went to a bookstore and picked up this edition:The Importance of Being EarnestIt's fine. It's easy to read. It has introcutory material and other frills if you're into that sort of thing, and it's cheaper. Get that one or some other, not this one.

Of Wilde's plays I have only seen The Importance of Being Earnest which is wonderfully witty and ridiculous. Collected in this volume are the title play along with Lady Windermere's Fan, A Woman of No Importance, An Ideal Husband and Salome. The first four are light entertainment filled with witty dialogue. The last, Salome, is macabre and dark. I was curious about that one because of the hubbub over it being a play based on scripture but laced sexual overtones. I'm glad I read it because its not something I would want to go to see like the other four but in Wilde's defense, the Herods were a nasty, incestuous and murderous bunch and he does not do injustice to John the Baptist or Christ. The most disturbing part about the play is when Salome kisses the severed head of the prophet. She does this because he refused her advances while alive.The illustrations in the book are the originals done by Aubrey Beardsley and they are only in Salome. I liked his illustrations in Macmillan's The Happy Prince and Other Stories but I found the ones for Salome nasty, grotesque and bordering on porn. Not to my taste at all.The rest of the book still merits my five star rating both in content and quality.Macmillan's Collectors library editions are well made beautiful pocket sized hard covers. There are two other Oscar Wilde books in the collection: Picture of Dorian Gray and The Happy Prince and Other Stories.

It would be all too easy to dismiss this play as a light romantic comedy. Although it is about a series of near thwarted romances – the stuff of a million ‘chick-flicks’ and romantic comedies going back as far as the eye can see in drama – this is also something much, much more. It is also a delightfully amusing commentary on human sexual relations, the English class system and (much more importantly) a perfect mirror on the amusing excesses of human selfishness. In fact, some of the best lines in the play, and the funniest lines in the play, highlight our near infinite capacity to love ourselves. To quote only a few and without hardly looking:“If you are not too long, I will wait for you all my life.”“Oh! Not at all, Gwendolen. I am very fond of being looked at.”“If I am occasionally overdressed, I make up for it by being always immensely over-educated.”“I don’t play accurately – anyone can play accurately – but I play with wonderful expression.”“You see, it (her diary) is simply a very young girl’s record of her thoughts and impressions, and consequently meant for publication.”The other terribly interesting thing in this play is the role of family. Not only are the families quite dysfunctional, even when people know who their parents are, but the title character is about as confused about how he fits into the complex world of family relations as it is possible to make someone. The thing that makes the line about the handbag quite so funny is that this handbag is about the closest thing he has to family in the entire world. As Pascal once said, we laugh and cry about the same things.Wilde is, it hardly needs to be said, the closest thing to a God we are likely to have visit us on this planet. There are, for example, even now, more than 100 years after his death, entire companies that produce desk calendars that would not be in business if not for the endless supply of quotes he provides for the foot of Monday the Ninth of February and so on.If humour comes in a spectrum and slapstick is at one end of that spectrum, then this is the other end.

This book contains Wilde work in the first 76% of the content, the remaining 25% is marketing material about leading a Book Club. This filler material inflated the size of the book. A wonderful look behind the scenes at a selection of Twin Cities restaurants. The recipes are written for home cooks, although a few would take a pretty high degree of commitment. Outstanding photography also... Stephanie Meyer is multi-talented. The only down point--and it is not the author's fault at all--is that the Twin Cities restaurant scene is so volatile that several of the restaurants featured have already closed or the headline chef has moved on. But it's a great snapshot of the moment in time when the book was written, and will remain relevant as a darn good cookbook, regardless.

I'm not sure what to do first? Curl up with a glass of wine and savor all the photos and stories in this book, run out and try all of the places featured in the book, or hit the grocery store so that I can start diving into all of the delicious recipes in the book? The author did a great job of capturing the flavor of the area and the photos will make your mouth water. This book makes me happy that I live in the Twin Cities and am fortunate to be able to have all of these amazing food choices at my fingertips.

After receiving my copy of Twin Cities Chef's Table, I knew that I immediately wanted to mark the pages of the restaurants that I needed to visit. Needless to say, every page is marked! I love how Stephanie captured the personality and passion of these talented local chefs and love that she compiled an amazing resource of fantastic food. Move over hotdish, Stephanie and the creative chefs in this book are going to challenge us to add some sophistication and raw flavor to our traditional classics!

Stephanie's ability to showcase local chefs and recreate their recipes for the home cook is amazing. It is so exciting to take a peek inside some of these kitchens and restaurants that truly showcase the greatness of the Twin Cities restaurant scene. The photography is simply stunning! It's hard to decide which recipe to make first, and there's something for every type of palette, from hearty meat dishes, glorious salads, beautiful desserts and small plates.

There is a LOT in this book but I believe it not for beginners (which IS after all, part of the title).PROSEach story (chapter) has this format, which I like:a. The story (with certain words in bold)b. German summaryc. English summaryd. Vocabulary (translation of words shown in bold in story)e Questions about the story (5 questions with multiple choice answers) - good to check story understandingf. Answers (to the 5 questions about the story)The stories are highly creative and cover many topics such as household disagreements. pets, travel, online dating, unusual situations, etc.Many words are shown in bold within each story and they are shown in a Vocabulary List following the summaries.I love the 2 summaries. The first is in German which makes you struggle in a nice way, then the second summary is in English, which is very helpful when you can’t (like me) figure out all the German.Questions about each story are shown after the Vocabulary List and they are a nice touch for checking your understanding of the story.CONSEach story was supposed to cover a particular tool of German, but did not do so, as far as I could tell. There was no indication as to which story covered verbs, pronouns, nouns, etc.For a beginner, I believe most stories are too long with too many vocabulary words shown in bold (Chapter 20 has about 65 words in the Vocabulary List).”Repetitio est mater studiorum” is a Latin phrase (something I remember from 4 years of Latin) which means “Repetition is the mother of learning” but, unfortunately, I find that there is NOT enough repetition in this book.New words are fine, but most bold words are just used a SINGLE time in the story, so you can’t figure out the meaning of most of them by their context. I’d prefer shorter stories with fewer vocabulary words used MANY times within the story.CONCLUSIONWhile this book has a lot to offer a higher level German learner it is, in my opinion, NOT for beginners (otherwise, I would have rated it higher). I do not believe I am a German beginner, having done 4 Pimsleur German Courses, a Michel Thomas (much shorter) German Course, 3 years of DuoLingo and having gone through various grammar books, etc., and I speak several languages to a fair extent.OK, I like to read a story and enjoy it, but having too many (mostly new) words in bold within a single chapter is not fun for me, which is why I have only done a few chapters (out of 20) so far.However, some highly motivated (not me) beginners may may enjoy the challenges this book provides.

This book is a great supplement to any German language course and/or anyone learning on their own. Its layout is great: story, summary, translation, vocab. Super helpful material to let you see the language in a contextual way rather than a boring textbook with no context or explanation. Really helped me learn how to read the language and understand the sentence structure in a natural way that rivals what you learn in school

Excellent book for everyone who has a desire to learn German. I find it easy and fun to read. It suits me fine even for night hours when I am already tired. It is structured in a good way, so you are really left with new knowledge after spending some time reading.

These are super helpful--they're just at the right level for me and help me get a better understanding of sentence structure in a mostly organic way instead of just memorizing out of grammar books. Highly recommend!

This is exactly the kind of resource beginner students want. It's probably best for students with 1/2 or 1 years of formal German instruction, depending on how challenging you want the experience to be. If you have B1 understanding the vocabulary targets and sentence complexity will probably feel just right. The stories aren't incredibly fascinating, but they are of a good size to read for simple practice and they are no better or worse than any other language-learning stories. They are a little less noxious than reading children's books and if you need this resource, you're not ready for adult fiction, so of course the stories read like a primer, that's the point. The topics are practical and oriented toward what you might discuss in real life -- for example, the first story has housework vocabulary -- which is a lot more helpful than stories for 6 year olds!In the e-book version, the format is perfect. You get a story with a good amount of white-space in the pages so the bolded vocabulary words don't clutter up the page and become a distraction. It may sound like a silly detail, but the eyes slip easily down the story, and if you're already tired while studying, this matters. The stories are followed by a summary in your target language and native language, vocabulary list, and multiple choice questions. It's obviously not a stand-alone course of study, but it's a good tool to increase your immersion in the language when your level of understanding is still too low to replace your regular media consumption with the target language, and the supplemental comprehension tools are very helpful without becoming too close to a textbook.

Short stories with useful vocabulary at the end is really helpful. Reading the summary in English at the end of each story first before reading the story in German language really helps to understand the story more. This is a good story book for beginners.

Gregory Crewdson is a graduate of SUNY Purchase and the Yale University School of Art, where he is the director of Graduate Studies in Photography. His work has been exhibited extensively in the U.S. and internationally. The retrospective Gregory Crewdson toured Europe from 2005 to 2008, and the survey In a Lonely Place traveled throughout Europe, Australia, and New Zealand in 2013. He was the subject of Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters, a 2012 feature documentary directed by Ben Shapiro that focused on the making of Crewdson’s ambitious series Beneath the Roses, which took nearly ten years and a crew of more than one hundred people to produce. Crewdson’s awards include the Skowhegan Medal for Photography, National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship, and Aaron Siskind Fellowship. He is represented by Gagosian Gallery.

This is the catalog for his current show at Gagosian. An amazing work, if you like Crewdson, this is a must have book. Beautifully bound, printed in Italy. Prints are good enough for framing.

There is no great deviation from Crewdson's past work; if you liked Beneath the Roses then you'll probably like Cathedral of the Pines.

I like this set for the translation very much, it restores to the English reader the correct translation. What I mean is this. In most modern English translations (including the Soncino) passages that may be seen as offensive to Gentile readers (and their are quite a few) are changed, or escape clauses are added in the footnotes. For example, Sanhedrin 58b 'A heathen (Goy) who keeps a day of rest deserves death.' In the footnotes it is stated, 'deserves death' is not to be taken 'literally.' This is an escape clause, so that when challenged about the racist nature of the Talmud unsuspecting Gentiles can be placated. The original Hebrew does not have these additions, and Adin Steinsaltz has maintained the intigrity of the Hebrew text.The problem with this set is that it is not a complete set of the Babylonian Talmud. Random House has only published the first 22 volumes. Although it cannot be proven, many suspect that the printing was stopped because of pressure from the Orthodox Rabbis, who did not want the true nature of Judaism being exposed to non-Hebrew speakers. Because of my own study and knowledge of Judaism I believe this is most likely the case.The other problem with these volumes is their price, while some are not to expensive, because of the limited availability of this set others are very pricey indeed, with used copies of some over $250 each.All that being said, if you are looking for a really good English translation these Steinsaltz Talmud are the best available.

I use this along with the Schottenstein edition of the Talmud. Steinsaltz often has very interesting and helpful background information. The interpretations are easy to understand and accessible even if you don't have a lot of Jewish education.

I'm using it in my Talmud class with my Rabbi. It's very nice to have my own copy to take notes in.

This edition is perfect if your not too hot on your aramaic. It has a clear lay out and a good translation. It provides an easy to follow english version with the hebrew layed out along side and tries its best to keep the style and order of the original.

I eagerly anticipated this book for two reasons that don’t fit well together. First, although I do not know the Obamas, I have several friends who are close personal friends of both Michelle and Barack (this results from my attending law school while Barack was teaching, and living in Chicago for some years thereafter). Second, I am not particularly a fan of their politics, although I obviously have nothing against them personally. Thus, I think I can offer an objective view of this book—and I found it both moving and worthwhile.What comes across most in this book is Michelle Obama’s lack of self-pity combined with clarity of vision. I suspect this was a difficult book to write—she knew that whatever she wrote, somebody, and maybe a lot of people, would criticize her for it. She therefore focuses quite a bit on what might be called practical insight and empowerment, rather than on settling political scores. That’s probably a wise choice—after all, her husband’s terms as President showed that very few people were interested in political settlements or compromise.The first third of the book covers her childhood (“Becoming Me”). Contrary to the stereotype of Democrats as the party of the elite, Obama’s childhood, at least, was working class. She grew up in the lower middle class South Shore neighborhood of Chicago; her father was a boiler operator. Obama grew up in a stable household where her parents made their high expectations clear, though family life had its challenges, especially her father’s falling ill with multiple sclerosis. Still, she managed to go to Princeton, then Harvard Law, and then to work at the ultra-prestigious Chicago law firm of Sidley & Austin, where she met Barack (and where my wife worked, a few years after that time). I started law school in 1991, when Barack had just returned to Chicago from Harvard; he was much talked about even before he began teaching at the University of Chicago, because a high-powered Harvard graduate did not often choose to return to community organizing, rather than working for a white-shoe firm like Sidley. In contrast, Michelle Obama makes clear in this book she’s the organized, path-following one, who shows up on time, unlike her husband, which is probably why law firm life suited her better.These initial years with Barack form the second third of the book (“Becoming Us”); one can tell that Obama struggled with her husband’s political ambition, because being a political spouse always imposes tremendous costs on the one not running for office (and she is explicit she has no interest in herself running for office). In fact, she talks at some length about the couples’ counseling they had to go through as a result, though it seems to have worked out for them! All of this is quite interesting, and much more readable than the massive biography of Barack that David Garrow wrote two years ago, “Rising Star,” which defeated my repeated attempts to read it, by having far too much irrelevant detail. Michelle Obama does not make that mistake here, for which the reader, or at least this reader, is grateful.Obama closes the last third of the book with what was probably the hardest part to write, “Becoming More.” She talks about the stress, but also the opportunity to offer her vision, that being in the spotlight meant, and she criticizes Barack’s successor in office in no uncertain, but in measured, terms. At the end, she remains optimistic, but one gets a little of the feeling that she isn’t certain her optimism is warranted.I have a lot of sympathy for Michelle Obama. Every person in power, whether that power is direct or indirect, is always ultimately frustrated, but it must gall her to see the contrast between her husband and Donald Trump. I think that she picked the right path of not making that the focus of the book, though. She’s a grounded pragmatist at heart, or at least so it seems from this book. And we could all use a lot more grounded pragmatism, so her contribution to public discourse with this book is (unlike many political autobiographies) both illuminating and valuable.

I believe I always loved Michelle Obama. Her grace and dignity always seemed to come as a gift from above. Her spirit is so incredibly deep and strong. The stories from her childhood, her brother, her neighborhood, her family, inform us in a brilliant voice about what it was like in the place and time she grew up.Michelle Obama has the empathy and the depth of character so missing in her media portrayal. I always felt worried that we were suffocating her. But there is a Michelle Obama who is bigger than the words on a page. She knows our pains, and she understands our lives. And we know her in this book. In this most private book, we know her in a way we could not have otherwise. Interesting that nothing here surprises me, it only affirms what I felt like I know: Michelle Obama is a person like us. She worked and suffered and overcame.Her storytelling skills are exquisite. It left me a little breathless to hear her voice, unfettered and real.I love the photographs.

Michelle Obama is my voice, a voice that may never be heard with thoughts, feelings and experiences similar to mine yet they don’t matter until now. Thank you Mrs. Obama! For being the voice of this African American woman❤️ Everyone should buy this book!

Except for the early chapters, this is one of the best memoirs by a political leader that I have read.When it comes to first ladies, I’ve liked and respected them all. My favorite was Barbara Bush, wife of George H. W. Bush. Michele Obama, though, ranks quite highly.This work by Michelle is a definite eye opener into her life. The opening chapters show her youth, in which she grudgingly accompanied her father during his rounds in his groundwork fixing the fixable issues for the Democratic Party constituents of his boss, an alderman in Chicago.Honestly, this early part of her life could have been trimmed. Still, my understanding of the plight of black Americans in history did benefit.Despite the media’s fixation on everything Donald Trump, Michelle only mentions his name on nine separate pages. And, aside from her fear for her girls, she states nothing extraordinary about the man. I suppose it is significant that the only excerpts we have been provided by the news media is her statement that she will never forgive him for endangering her family in regards to the birther movement. In other words, for people looking for dirt, gossip, or controversy, this memoir is likely to go down as one of the least noted autobiographies in modern times.I wish, though, that the First Lady had mentioned more of Malala Yousafzai and her courageous fight for women and girls and education.BLUSH FACTOR: No worries here.
