This older book delves into "hedge magicians" for the World of Darkness in general, not just Mage: the Ascension. Unfortunately, its nowhere near as good as the revised edition, but theres still some good info to be found here. The introduction makes a point of how "sorcerers" have been overlooked by "True" Mages, and also tries too hard to make distinctions. Basically, the introduction gives a look at what "hedge magic" is and why people practice it, as well as what its like to play as a seeker after occult knowledge (from the point of view of an Arcanum investigator). It then closes out look some "basic rules" (ie sorcerers aren't members of Crafts, they don't work True Magic, etc) which are basically artificial distinctions that few Mages pay attention to anyway. The next chapter takes a look at Sorcerer societies. Five groups get full write-ups complete with histories, magical styles and connections to other supernaturals, including the high ritualists of the Ancient Order of Aeon Rites, the Balamob Mayan shaman, the Mormon mystics of the Nephite Priesthood, the Nigerian Uzoma priests and the new age Thal'hun. Minor groups like the Irish Fenian, Mogen ha Chav kabbalists, Dozen Priests of the Pythian Order and others also get brief mention. However, as good as the full write ups are, some of the things have now changed with the metaplot (ie, Balamob and Uzoma joining the Dreamspeakers, Nephites becoming Choristors and the Thal'hun disbanding and being reabsorbed into a new group called the Star Council). The next chapter covers character creation, including a handful of new Traits, Archetypes and Backgrounds, as well as some appropriate Merits and Flaws. Some of the stuff is a bit overpowered though (immortality for instance), but most of it fits the mood and themes of the World of Darkness. Theres also a chart for converting "hedge magic" into Disciplines, Arcanoi or Spheres (for sorcerers who die, Awaken or are Embraced). Its an okay system, but again slightly unbalanced. Following this is an entire chapter on "hedge magic" covering casting, systems and common foci and styles. Theres also over a dozen Paths (and associated rituals), magical effects such as shapeshifting, divination, speaking with spirits, alchemy, healing, controlling elements, making magical items and so forth. Unfortunately, the Paths aren't always well defined. Theres also a chapter of templates, like the shapeshifting hitchhiker, antiquarian, street prophet and secret agent/witch. Nothing interesting, but it seems like all of the sorcerers in this chapter are not members of any of the above described groups. The appendix includes sorcerers of note, like Cagliostro, the wandering African Uzoma thief Taneela Rangi Ya Fedha and the disturbingly mysterious "Gretchen", as well as some cool magical items like the love poppet, vision skull and a demonic mask. In addition to a character sheet, theres also a decent bibliography and list of websites. Overall, this is a good book, especially if you want information on things like the Balamob, Nephites or Uzoma. Otherwise, just save your money and buy Sorcerer revised. You get more up-to-date systems and mechanics (including way more paths), plus it meshes up better with the current setting.

WoD: Sorcerer is a great book, detailing a system for"hedge wizards," IE, sorcerers you don't have to break yourneck reading the Mage book to understand. The seven or eight Sorcerer lineages bring all kinds of fresh occult material to a World of Darkness where you thought you'd seen everything (just because you know what vampires, werewolves, and wraiths are). With juicy descriptions and a bunch of "hedge paths," of magic, WoD Sorcerer brings much-needed mystery and diversity to any WoD game. It has rules for awakening or being embraced *after* sorcerous study, too, so if you really want to complicate your Vampire or Mage chronicle from the start, this is your book.

I am of an alternative religion, and have always striven to bring my characters to be as close to my true self as possible, and this book lets me turn my self into a realistic, playable character. As has been said, they don't have the overpower complex magic of Mage, but do have an edge over other mortals. In the end, if you want to play a mortal with a chance of survival, this is one of the best books for it!

Sorcerer is an excellent book, the hedge magician add more depth for all campaign in the World of Darkness. The hedge magician don't have the overpower Ture Magick of Mage, because that they have to use more intelligence and roleplay than simples die rolls to win. Play a hegde magician is play with a mortal who face gods! It's great!

This is great for botanist and gardeners. I am a botanist and will say that these pictures are worth a thousand and one words. It is faster to look though this book than search the web, when you are trying to remember a flower because the images are so clear and vivid. They are arranged by scientific families and there is a glossary of common and scientific names.The book is VERY heavy and the pages are glossy (got for free super saver shipping!). It is necessary that this book be hardback, because it will be used. I have artist friends that have borrowed it to sketch from. Friends have looked though it to get ideas for planting flowers and researching native blooms. I wish I had had this book as a child, because I loved plants then too!Be sure to get the set(book on shrubs too). If you buy the set, instead of one at a time, the books come in a box. I purchased my set in the box while working at the New York Botanical. This box helps protect the spines and hold these huge books upright.

An incredible resource for gardeners and botanical artists. I use this as a reference guide for drawings and paintings. Every page shows leaves, flowers, detailed parts of the plant including seads, petals or inner stamen. The photography and care of placement of images throughout this book make it a treasure.

The most comprehensive and beautifully photographed flower book I've ever seen. I think it's an incredible resource for artists and gardeners. Each page had photographs of the leaves, flowers and close ups of inner stamen/details of petals etc. Botanical artists especially would love this.

This is an excellent series - I already had Volume II. For any serious or professional gardener, the layout of plants by family gives you a much better understanding of nature and makes identifying plants really easy. The photos are lovely, and the clearest you will find in any book for id-ing details.

A little awkward to navigate, I would prefer Botanical alphabetical order...you definitely will be going to the index a lot. I would also like to see more specific information on the plant's preferred environment and zones. Excellent illustrations; great for plant I.D.

We really got a gold mine with this book and vol. 2 ! Got a great price on each book and we felt we came out on top! Both books are like buying a art book filled with fine art, plus filled with info to match on all trees and shrubs in vol.1. Vol,2 is filled with plants of all kinds, another art filled book . Both books are a great buy!!!!! The one thing which make these books a great buy is we bought both used !!!!!

Wanted this volume because I was interested in gardening. Purchased a "used" copy for a very reasonable price. When it arrived it was in excellent condition so I bought volume 2.

This is definitely the most enjoyable book I had to read for my college classes. In addition to providing a detailed history on the nation of Iran and the events that led to the overthrow of they're government, Kinzer wrote this novel in the style of a James Bond novel, and this is completely justified by the source material.History class doesn't get much more exciting than this.

Stephen Kinzer has done a great job of reminding us that it is not only the Muslims that have screwed up the Middle East. America and Britain had a big role in creating the conditions we see today. While it is impossible to predict what would have happened if we had not deposed Mosaddegh and installed the Shah. Kinzer explains just how misguided our intervention in Iranian internal politics was and connects the dots leading to the hostage crisis and today's bellicose posturing. It is too bad that a country with people who like and admire Americans is being governed by people who describe America as the great Satan, especially when the county was on a very different path. Maybe this study of our past blindness will open our eyes in the future, but I doubt it.

The author provides a detailed description of why and how the CIA of the United States orchestrated the overthrow of the western oriented, democratically elected, and secular government of Iran in 1953. This book is important and a must-read for anyone interested in what is currently going on in the Middle East. The sin of Prime Minister Muhammad Mossadegh? He had, in 1951, nationalized the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (now BP) because the company had economically and socially exploited the country for many decades and had not fairly shared proceeds of Iran’s natural resource with the country. Great Britain appealed to the United States to help them overthrow the regime in Iran. Although President Truman had rejected this appeal, Great Britain made the appeal again after the election of Dwight Eisenhower in 1952. The Dulles brothers (John Foster as Secretary of State and Allen as CIA Director), who saw a communist behind every tree, disingenuously convinced President Eisenhower that Prime Minister Mossadegh’s government would fall under communist influence! The overthrow was subsequently approved by Eisenhower.Thus, the United States handed power to the Shah and his secret police who oppressively ruled Iran until the Revolution of 1979. In 1979, the people of Iran had had enough of the Shah’s brutality and overthrew the government. During the Shah’s regime, the only viable resistance was in the mosques such that when the Shah was eventually expelled, the leadership unsurprisingly fell to the imams. Given the role of the United States in overthrowing a democratically-elected government and then supporting an oppressive and brutal dictatorship, it should not be surprising that Iran is very suspicious of the United States. The United States obviously has some culpability for the current theocracy of Iran.An interesting note is that he CIA agent who was given responsibility for orchestrating the 1953 coup in Iran was Kermit Roosevelt, the grandson of former president Teddy Roosevelt. Interesting because Teddy Roosevelt, himself, interfered in a sovereign country when he encouraged Panamanian rebels to secede from Colombia in order to build the Panama Canal.

FTC NOTICE: Library BookREVIEW: “All the Shah’s Men” serves as the second book I have read by Stephen Kinzer, and it was full of intrigue, micro-histories, and biographies that left me with the desire to research and read more about the Middle East as well as additional books by this author.It is not unusual for history books to discuss timelines and people; but, what I appreciated most in this text was Kinzer’s differing approach to historical data. He was generous with details about a significant array of people that were involved with multiple coups. There were names of people in his book that I did not recall seeing in other compendiums pertaining to Middle East history and/or Iran. Kinzer shared what their individual philosophies were and how they affected their decisions and the resulting behaviors.One challenge I experienced while reading this book, and that which prevented me from giving it five stars in lieu of four of them, was that there was too much going back and forth in history. A political leader’s history and interactions with others was/were very well described; but, at the end of that history, the reader was then re-introduced to a character at the beginning or middle of the previous history and all within the same chapter. Segmentation via a few extra and short chapters would have helped.Despite the back-and-forth of histories, Stephen Kinzer has a great way of making a reader take a look at a situation and evaluate what could have been done differently. Unfortunately, he waited until over 200 pages into the book for any analysis or extrapolation to occur. This was coupled with a whole series of “if” and “if” and “if-then” and “if.” In doing so, Kinzer inadvertently de-valued what he was trying to accomplish, and the history could no longer be evaluated as a reality. Thankfully I had already read another book called "Reset: Iran, Turkey, and America's Future" by Kinzer, so I knew what he was trying to accomplish, and I didn’t want him to think that this was lost on me. He wanted the reader to imagine how things could have been done differently; what would have happened if one or all of these things did not occur?The author is also quite talented when it comes to creating imagery. He does this thoughtfully, purposely, and respectfully. Kinzer shares the details of his trip to Iran and his visit to Mossadegh’s final home. There are descriptions of colors, flowers, and buildings, and he places them in the context of what they experienced and looked like in history and how they had changed by the time of his visit. There is a certain romanticism about how he goes about interviewing people who were employees, villagers/neighbors, friends and family of Mossadegh. Stephen Kinzer makes it clear that with the Mossadegh name, there is a legacy, and there is a responsibility to keep the name pure.Purity and the instability of relationships were prevalent themes in this book. The intelligence that the American government received was not consistently pure. There were people who wanted to make a name for themselves and leveraged “The Cold War” and its threat of spreading communism as a way to convince an American president that it was time to start supporting the British government in its efforts to take back Iran’s newly-nationalized oil company. Kinzer did a good job of “calling out” these people, namely The Dulles Brothers.There were good people on all sides who had good intentions, and they were coupled with individuals or groups filled with mal-intent, which ultimately led to a surpise coup of Mohammed Reza Shah and the promotion to leadership and ultimate power of and for the Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran. There were well-described changes in alliances that ultimately put the United States in an unsavory position with countries in the Middle East…definitely an unfortunate stance and one that can hopefully be corrected.

This book provides immeasurable insight into not only our relationship with Iran today, but the politics of our country. It provides a provocative hint into the role that covert actions undertaken by the American Government have played in shaping history, and their disastrous consequences. A strong democracy requires an informed electorate, and the truth of history should be a major part of that base of information. If anything, this book should make every American fearful of the thin veneer of our political process and base of information just as it hid the role of the United States in the disastrous events of August 1953.

This is a great addition to your collection of Psalms, and I have found it very useful for Lectio or for prayer groups. If you are occasionally overwhelmed by some of the graphic descriptions of animosity you often find in the Psalms, this text balances them out very nicely indeed, and gives you a new appreciation of the emotional depth and universality they express (some authors that when the Psalms speak of hatred or revenge, they are actually speaking of our own mental environment and not to external enemies). Still, there are times when expressions like "May they dash your babies against a rock" or "There is not one good person left" are neither welcome nor productive, IMHO, and this includes mixed company like prayer groups.On the other hand some of the language gets a bit cloying at times, and some of the translations seem a bit stretched, so I would suggest using it in conjunction with other translations (I read a Psalm each day, and find it is a welcome addition for some of the more hostile Psalms or emotions). It's just a nice translation to read when you are feeling overwhelmingly positive and want something to help you along.

"Yeah though I walk...through the valley of the shadow of fear... "As an interfaith chaplain, I care about lifting up providence and a personal connection with a loving Higher Power. These psalms sometimes substitute "Beloved" (as great Sufi poets do...) for the more common and theistic "Lord". For me, supporting people of any belief at the end-of-life, I tend to go to the basics - i.e. love is the boss of us. These thoughtful re-interpretations of the psalms speaks to the core of Judeo-Christian-Muslim traditions...i.e. LOVE. I recommend it highly.Rev Eleesabeth M. The "user friendly" translation of the Psalms allows for more reading aloud to younger audiencesas well as to those who are ill and who do not need / will not understand the Dominating Judgmental image of God but insteadneed to encounter the Compassionate Love image of the Divine.Highly recommend for audiences of mixed religious backgrounds.I used it during a medical/wellness CEU classand the feedback was that this was a good translation for a non-religious group.

This is one of the most inspiring re-writes of the psalms that I've ever experienced. There's a heart-centered and magical quality to the verses which goes beyond the traditional reading of the Psalms. I found myself drawn into the depths of the Psalm's true meaning. Nan Merrill's version of the Psalms drew me into a personal and intimate relationship with the divine, the sacred, the Ultimate Reality, the Beloved.

This book by Nan Merrill is my favorite place to go when I am in great need of consolation! A wonderful gift for your troubled friend or family.

While the psalms in this book are written maintain the essence of the original psalms, many of the original psalms sound rather vengeful and hate-filled, perhaps that more closely reflected the overall state of consciousness of people of those times - not that there aren't many people who feel that way these days, but these days more people seem to be spiritually awakened or at least have a desire to overcome their base impulses and truly follow the voice of the spirit within, the voice that always guides along the path of the Light, along the path of Love, along the path of realization that there is only ONE spirit expressing through everything.To give you a taste for the psalms you can find in this book, here is the beginning of the psalm 107:"We give thanks to You,who are the Source of Love;whose Light shines forththroughout the universe!Come, awaken our heartsthat we might do your work,For, without you, we can do nothing;'tis your Love that loves through us."Ultimately, your success with prayers of any kind will come not from mechanically repeating something that someone else has written, but by looking into your heart and by speaking from your heart and in that respect, you may end up altering the wording even of the psalms you find in this book to fit the prayers that live in your heart.Just as the psalm says:"O, that you may learn to seewith your heart,to hear and think with your heart, as well!"And perhaps the most important point:"O peoples of the Light,Awaken to the knowledge that lives within you!"And to conclude this in the Spirit of Oneness(and the true spirit of the Bible, the very essence of itand those who proclaim to be the followers of jesus Christ,and those who call themselves spiritual,regardless of their religion or lack of it):"And know yourself! Let your aim beto recognize who you are.Aspire to live as sons and daughtersof Divine Love,to enshrine the earth with divinity,To honor all relationships as sacred,and to live in peace and in balance of all things.Acknowledge the sacredness of every path,albeit different from your own;In this way you honor the Great Mystery,and the wonder of all life!"

I adore this book! In the past I have thought many of the Psalms were irrelevant to modern people because of the many references to "enemies" and all the battles and violent behaviiors they expressed.But this book helped me understand that such references are indeed very relevant to today's people when they are understood as the "enemies" we all harbor within: fears, doubts, raging emotions etc. etc. It really helped me to look more deeply within and understand the "battles" that rage under all of our civillized demeanors!

I honestly applaud this series for a number of things. One: For starters, the time and focus the manga takes to tell you what Beach Volleyball is and how it is played is great, and it never really feels out of place. The flow is never really broken and it is great for those who aren't too familiar with how the game is played. Two: Considering the setup and what the series is all about, being beach volleyball, a sport where a set of girls play against another set of girls in two piece bikinis, the opportunity to have tasteless fanservice is very high. I'm VERY happy to report that the "fanservice" is very tamed and quite tasteful. Lovely girls being "sporty" and some awkward hugs with some "yuri" elements make up a lot of the "saucy" parts of Harukana Receive, but never feel forced or unwanted. The manga is full of cute and sexy girls playing a sport that is indeed a true Olympic sport. Its fun and charming and the characters are bright, colorful and enjoyable to watch. I'd recommend this to anyone who is tired of "sports" manga and is looking for a series with some cute girls playing an intense sport while looking wonderful and doing the sport justice. Can't wait to see how the anime animates the series. Its going to be fun. ^^

Great art and story

This is certainly an ideal time for Seven Seas to release Nyoijizai’s Harukana Receive. Yes, you have the anime that’s out. Also yes, the weather now is scorching, so in that respect it makes sense. You look around, however, and realize that there’s not much, if any, sports manga about beach volleyball. Shojo FIGHT! is carrying the torch for indoor volleyball, but now here’s the perfect companion with beach volleyball!This, however, totally brings the fanservice in a manner that’ll impress its intended audience.Harukana Receive begins with the introduction of Ozora Haruka, a tall high school age girl who’s moved to Okinawa. Haruka meets her cousin, Higa Kanata, but after their initial introduction, she senses something’s off with Kanata. That’s temporarily thrown aside when they get to the beach, as Haruka strips and steps into the water (wearing her bikini). However, this eventually leads Haruka to meet two girls playing beach volleyball, and this ultimately brings in a new challenge for her, both physically and mentally.Though at this point in the story, the mental challenge revolves around Kanata, who is great at beach volleyball, and how Haruka helps her out. While Kanata’s knowledgeable about the game, she soon lost her edge once taller players began to stop her. This affected her relationship with Toi Narumi, a fantastic player who ultimately paired up with someone new. In some cases, it even hurt how she acts around Haruka. So in general, this volume plays up Haruka’s excitable attitude, but it also delves a bit into insecurity about body types.And not just Kanata, but also Haruka is being super conscious of how tall she is. Like the first time we see her, she’s affected by people commenting on how tall she is (saying she must be a model). There’s a later part of the manga where she reveals this to Kanata. I dunno if the manga will explore this much, but it was nice to see this looked at a bit.As someone that doesn’t watch beach volleyball outside of the few times a certain US Olympic pair destroyed the competition, I at least figured you can only strategize so much in this sport.In Harukana Receive, I’m right and mostly wrong at the same time. The right part is only in the fact that because you only have two players in the sand, you can’t save a spike. So knowing this, the game is a battle involving talent, wit, and strategy. And this manga (thanks Haruka!) explains the basics of the sport super well.A great example of strategy is when Haruka and Kanata face off against Narumi and her partner, Ayasa Tachibana. Both Narumi and Ayasa are champions, so they clearly have the advantage in almost every area. However, it doesn’t mean you can’t think about what your opponents are doing, and Narumi figuring out her opponents would try something different at the right time isn’t just a guess — you only know that by reading the field, how the game is going, etc. You factor that with the weather conditions and you’re playing on sand, and then realize the strain it is to play three sets, and suddenly this sport is pretty interesting.All in all, Harukana Receive does delve into the sport of beach volleyball a ton. I suspect it’ll continue with the introduction of the Thomas twins. But you do occasionally get reminded that beach volleyball has women in bikinis. For the most part this manga doesn’t go overboard, but then you get Claire Thomas, a blonde, pulling down the skirt of her sister, Emily. You then also get small arcs involving butts. There was one that was funny, but it goes to that well a lot, which will probably annoy a few. In the end though, if you’re looking for more sports manga, Harukana Receive is worth a look.
