About the Author

Dr. Y. Daniel Liang earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Oklahoma in 1991, and an MS and BS in Computer Science from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, in 1986 and 1983. Prior to joining Armstrong, he was an associate professor in computer science at Purdue University in Fort Wayne, where he twice received the Excellence in Research award. Dr. Liang was trained in theoretical computer science. He was active in graph algorithms from 1990 to 1995 and published more than ten papers in several established journals such as SIAM Journal on Computing, Discrete Applied Mathematics, Acta Informatics, and Information Processing Letters. Since 1996, he has devoted to writing texts and published more than thirty books with Prentice Hall. His popular computer science texts are widely adopted in the world. Dr. Liang was elected a Java Champion in 2005 by Sun Microsystems and has given lectures on Java internationally.

I had a copy of the 10th edition, and I was hoping to see something new in this one. I was comparing version 10 to 11, and it's essentially the exact same book (same wording, same problems), but also with some questionable changes. Everything in the 11th edition is EXACTLY the same as the 10th edition, except for one added chapter possibly, I can't quite remember (I can't check now because I returned it). However, if you compare the page count of 11th edition to 10th edition, you'll see that the 10th edition has over 100 pages more than the 11th edition. That's because they took out something like 3 or 4 chapters from the physical book, and put them online to Pearson (at least in the copy that I received). I really don't like this, because I like everything in a physical book, not in a digital subscription that would expire in a year.To the publishers of this book: Can you PLEASE put every single chapter, including all those more advanced Java ones that are digitally on Pearson now, in a physical book?

I have already had part of this book online since my access to myprogramminglab carried over from another language. I found the material difficult to understand and decided to buy the physical book for this upcoming semester since my myprogramminglab access was about to expire any way. I bought this book brand new assuming it had access to myprogramminglab since there is a myprogramming lab associated with this book. I was WRONG. There is no access to myprogramminglab it only provides an access code for the companion website and the code is only good for 1 year (Companion site cost if you don't have it through your book is $24.00). I paid $156.43 already for this new book and I checked with myprogramminglab it will either cost $96.95 with the eText available in the package or $44.95 without the eText functionality. So save your money people and either get a used one and then pay for myprogramming or just go with a digital version. I used the digital copy all last semester and it worked, however personally I prefer books. Considering how much it's now going to cost to get everything I'll need for just this one class, I wish I'd stayed with the online copy.

Exact as the 10th edition

The "loose leaf" is just that -- you'll need to buy a 2" industrial strength binder to but the "book" into. As with many loose leave binders, it's not ideal for turning pages as the slightest misalignment on the rings will tear the thin pages. At 1200+ pages, it's not light and with the binder won't fit easily into any backpack.Now the worse is that it comes with two access codes that give you little more than a headache. Apparently there is no access to the My Programming Lab if your university and/or class is not on board with giving a "courseID". Despite having purchasing this, a half-hour of broken English arguing that I needed to go back to my instructor was more frustrating than learning Java itself.The first impressions aren't great, as it's not used in my coursework as the handouts and modules suffice and the information I was interested in referencing are bizarrely absent from this text.If you must get this text, do yourself a favor and get a used, BOUND copy. You won't use this book past the semester your class, if you last that long.

This is one of the best beginner programming books out there, It will take you from a Rookie to an Advanced Level. I took a few months and went through the book (10th ed, pretty much the same) and got really good at Java programming. You can see Dr. Liang's effort in crafting the book and it is particularly tailored for beginners (no previous experience assumed). I believe students use this as a University Textbook, But this book is for anyone who wants to understand programming (the basics) from First Principles. Take the time to try out each example in the book and you wont regret it. Thanks to Dr. Liang for this amazing gift to the world.

I liked the mythic quality of the book: the magical landscapes (the suburb of Herot, the station hidden beneath the mountain), the one-dimensional nature of the characters, the use of the older women, and perhaps the mountain, as a kind of chorus. But the very things that made it work as myth made it not work as a novel. The flatness of the characters made their actions predictable, and because the story lived in magic-land, there was no discipline to the prose, that is, much repetition and a whole lot of statically described violence.

This is a magical, mythical, retelling of Beowolf told from differing perspective, full of wonder and respect for the natural world around us and for the fear of the built world we all must live in. I love the imagery, and lyric quality of the story. It is told from multiple points of view and I love the use of the classic Greek chorus for the Mothers and for the mountain itself to move the narrative along. Seamlessly flowing between dream and waking, hallucination and reality, memory and present you get a unique glimpse into each characters fears, frailities, and hopes. And it's up to you to decide the answer to the question - Who are the heroes and who are the monsters?

You should read this.You should brace yourself first, but read it. Holy carp am I glad I read this book. I mean, ow, but wow.It is epic, and full of flesh and teeth and blood and ghosts. It harrowed my soul out of me and then put it back deepened and gleaming. This book is not an easy ride. This book will show you the other sides of monsters and heroes. This book is full of old dirt and light too bright to look at. This book will tell you to listen.Listen.

I read Beowulf in college and again to my children, so I was delighted by this adaptation, which was never predictable but always surprising in the ways in which it would hearken back to the original. At the same time, it resonates strongly with the world we live in today, whether we recognize ourselves in Dana, Willa, or Ben. The writing was so achingly beautiful that I found myself wanting to read this slowly and alone, without distraction.

I loved this book, which I bought after hearing an interview with the author on public radio. While one might think that the plot is implausible -- a woman veteran goes underground and raises her child without the assistance of family or community -- it looks at people for whom there is NO community. Beautifully written and resonant of Beowulf without attempting to replicate that very masculine heroic society.

A well written novel. It starts out like a flash in the pan but the energy runs out three quarters of the way through. The ending was not satisfying at all. I would not avoid this book but I wouldn't hunt for it either

I think I'm a fairly clever reader, and felt certain I had a handle on at least some of the techniques Maria used to navigate this story. However in the last few pages, I found myself suddenly doubting everything I had believed to be true, which then lead me down the path of questioning my entire existence. It's brilliant book, one that I am already wanting to read again. One of the best book I've ever read.

This book keeps coming back to me, weeks later. Very well written, although in language and style intended to be almost mythic. More than a re-telling of Beowulf (I would inspired by Beowulf), the book has much to say about modern America, class, race, and, yes, even dogs. I’ve already ordered her translation of Beowulf to be published next year.

Great books for travel. I used this in Estonia and it was a perfect prep for the trip, and made you understand what is behind some of the cultural experiences. It was interesting that it stated there isn't exactly any true estonians around anymore - it's been invaded or governed by so many different parties over the decades and I think you see that when you go there. Someone had said that to me about Sicilians, but don't ever say that to a Sicilian!! :) I'm sure Estonia the same - and loved it there.

Pleasant to read. I was on my third visit to Estonia and by and large the book seems a fairly accurate reflection of quite a few important features..

It is essential to know something about the culture and manners of a country.this little book has pepared me for my first visit to Estonia in a way the usual guide book could not.

Masanobu Fukuoka saw what modern industrial farming was doing to the water, land and the farmers (both in terms of lifestyle and debt), and spent his life working on finding ways that food could be grown in a non polluting, sustainable manner. After a number of years he had rebuilt the soil on his family farm and proved that he could equal or better the yields of the "petroleum farmers" with his no chemical, lazy man's way of natural farming. Although the book discusses his methods and rationale, much time is devoted to showing what is wrong with the currently popular methods of farming.Throughout the book Mr Fukuoka lament's the change in farmer's lives from many years ago when there was much more leisure in the village life, whereas today they have to struggle to survive working long hours everyday and still cannot get out of debt. Debt created incidentally by being sold a system that relies on pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers, as well as large amounts of motorized equipment. The revolving door between the chemical companies and agricultural departments in government as well as school reliance on grants from these institutions are discussed, consumerism, our fetish for perfectly formed produce, and much, much more.This book can be read in a short period and is written in a nice conversational manner (kudos to Mr Larry Korn for his work there as well). Mr. Fukuoka has written a beautiful book on the benefits of natural farming. Basically he says that what is the most important factor in food production is the fertility of the soil. Good nutrition is dependent on a nutrient-rich soil. This book also has some of the author's philosophy of life. He states that any good farmer specialist needs to start with philosophy, then incorporate the science. I highly recommend this book to anyone growing food--be they industrial farmers or backyard growing enthusiasts.

Like many oriental authors, Masanobu spends much of his writing describing his philosophy. So easily finding out the precise methods he used to obtain the impressive yields of crops he obtained, is difficult. He does provide a brief overview… for example, he uses clover as a perpetual cover crop, straw as mulch, he plants into the cover crop without tillage, (although he weakens the clover by flooding the field in spring) he coats his seeds with clay to prevent them being eaten by birds and animals. But he does not provide detailed accounts.But really this does not matter because his book is a plea to trust nature and work with nature and to honour traditional, gentle ways of relating to each other and our world. In our frantic, hurried, consumer oriented, greed and profit driven world, I love his inspiring and wise message of living simply with nature

A very enjoyable read. To say this is a book only about philosophy or farming or ecology would not do it justice. While it touches on all of those topics, it's none of them. If you're open to the deeper meaning of texts, not just reading but actually philosophizing and seeking perspective, I think you will gain a lot more from this book than someone who only 'reads words' for their face value. The best I can tell you is, read it. You 'will' gain a new perspective. You're not going to agree with everything here, and some of the wording may offend you, but if you're open, I really do believe you will take something from it.

A whole different way of looking at agriculture. Mostly easy to read, short chapters. Author was way ahead of his time regarding environmental issues and agribusiness use of chemicals destroying the land and the water. He shows that working with nature produces improved soil and water AND better yields with less work.

I can't recommend this book highly enough, as a thoughtful, deeply ecological presentation of the natural farming version of permaculture. Mr. Fukuoka clearly was a keen, careful observer of nature and nature's ways, which is the basis of permaculture practice. It was interesting to note that Bill Mollison, the "father of permaculture", took many ideas from Mr. Fukuoka's practice. I've also been fascinated at the way these various people all came to similar conclusions and practices at roughly the same time period. The "cross-pollination", so to speak, has been very fruitful! Being steeped in the martial arts for many years, I was also struck by the strong Zen influence in many of Mr. Fukuoka's practices. I gighly commed this book to anyone interested in the field of permaculture.

This book was referred to me by a Facebook Permaculture group in my community. It reminds me of reading Deschooling and John Gatto's Dumbing Us Down when I started questioning education -- it is a book that came into my life when I was really ready to read it. There is a great wisdom to "Less is More" and the older I get the more I feel unsettled by technological progress. For me, Dr. Fukuoka explains why this unsettling exists.This is a philosophical book that uses growing food as its subject but growing is a metaphor for us, being fully human and seeking our natural state. I hate to oversimplify it, but I really believe that so many of our problems are due to our denial and separation from nature and our over-dependence on science as an answer for everything.The reassuring part for me is that when gardening or growing your own food, he reminded me that scientific intervention introduces more problems that we scramble to fix. Working with the natural system provides not only better food but a better mind and an enjoyable life.

Got the book for my husband, he seems to like it fine. He's the farmer in the family. The concepts are good, but the guy who wrote it lived in Japan, and some of the techniques/crops aren't necessarily applicable here to the south in the US. That was the only criticism heard. Other than that, fast shipping, good job.

I have been debating whether to “upgrade” to Windows 10. It is free in certain situations, but Microsoft is so hit or miss with their operating systems. I didn't want to give up my Windows 7 for something not nearly as good. This book really helped me to decipher the advantages and disadvantages to the switch. I was pleased to learn that there are a number of good reasons to make the switch. For instance, you can see more things in a single glance, it takes cues from mobile devices, it has a virtual assistant, offers a better/faster internet expiereince--just to name a few. The new functionality is compared with what is available in Windows 7 or 8, very helpful in deciding whether to switch. This is all in the first part of the book. The second part walks you step by step on how to use windows in a number of familiar or important tasks, functions, or settings. These steps also come with screen shots—very helpful. The book is clearly written and presented—essential for this kind of tech book. All in all, this is a great resource for deciding whether to get Windows 10, and how to use it if you do. I'm pleased to recommend it.

A very good aid in helping go to Windows 10 from Windows 7. So far, I haven't used the book too much, as Windows 10 help area is pretty good. Also I have the kindle version, so I have to have my tablet running next to the PC when I use it. For me, the paper book would be a little handier most of the time. I did use this book setting up Win 10 and it answered any questions I had. After looking the book over, I will be using it more. It is well laid out and pretty easy to navigate, even in Kindle. I think this is one of the best Win 10 books out there. It is a great help making the transition to Win 10. The only reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is that the Kindle version is more difficult for me to find information fast than a paper book. That is true with most Kindle books, though.

It really pulls together all the information that you need in toa) make a decision if you actually need it or not - does it actually offer any performance enhancements over previous windows, how the operating system work relative to previous windows, what are the other benefits / drawbacks b) how to use it - includes very handy images to help guide you through the different key tasks.Overall would I recommend Windows 10 - not if you do not own other Windows devices (e.g. phone and tablet).. otherwise wait another year

I always have this question in my mind why Windows skipped Windows 9 and moved on to Windows 10. Well, this book actually tried to answer my question, and I would say, I am really entertained with all the answers it gave. Also, as I am now using Windows 10, I learned a lot about the operating system that I am using. It taught me things that I would not learn by myself in a few days. I like this book and will keep it as long as I am with my Win10.

The Kindle version of this book is well worth the low price with lots of useful how-to information. There is, however, on major drawback: the text is displayed in light grey on a Kindle making it difficult to read.More generally, the book doesn't cover topics in depth, didn't add to my understanding of how the various components of Windows 10 for together, and would benefit from some overarching topics (e.g., 10 things to do when you buy a PC).
