LIFE. SAVER.Used the techniques outlined in this book, and both my kids are amazing sleepers. After bringing our first home from the hospital (now 3.5 years old), we looked at each other, crying, exhausted, in pain, not knowing what the heck to do with this tiny, screaming, starving human that wouldnt sleep. This was recommended to us by a friend who said "read it BEFORE you have the baby", but we didn't, and that was a HUGE mistake. So, while trying to breastfeed and dealing with the pain of a rough delivery and 30 hours of labor, and after not having slept for about 6 days, got this for the kindle and sort of read it while in a stupor, and seriously, this changed our lives. Used the same techniques for my second (now 14 months) and he still resists naps, but both of my kids started sleeping through the night at a young age. And really, my second would be a terrible sleeper if it wasnt for the techniques in this book. He takes a 2-3 hour morning nap, a 1-2 hour afternoon nap (usually), and sleeps about 11-12 hours at night. My first still takes an awesome 2-3 hour nap in the afternoon and sleeps about 11 hours at night.If you need to know what the essentials are for a new parent, this is one of them! I now buy this for every baby shower I go to. All a new parent needs is this book, a crib, a swaddle or sleep sack, a white noise machine, a wubbanub, a few onesies & footy pajames, loads of diapers, and boobs/formula. All the other stuff they tell you to get is really just for fun! :)Good luck!

LIFE-CHANGING! You do not need to read the entire book to follow the system, but I was so impressed with it that I read the entire thing. I used this in combination with the CD of white noise and had my daughter sleeping through the night the very first night I implemented it (at two months old). I could almost see the relief in her eyes as I followed this system and she was finally able to get the sleep she was desperate for. It has been four years and I STILL play the CD in her room each night. This is my go-to baby shower book and I have purchased it countless times since.

Very little new information from the original Happiest Baby on the Block (which we couldn't live without) and this book itself is pretty redundant. Felt like the Groundhogs Day of reading. I think the better pairing is Happiest Baby on the Block + No Cry Sleep Solution.

Stuck to his strategies and had our little one go from struggling with naps and never sleeping more than an hour or so during the night to regular naps and 3-4 hour stretches in the first month. It is definitely worth a try if you have a fussy sleeper!

I have read the book many times and even have pages bookmarked that I revisit when I reach a new developmental stage and need advice for my baby. I like that it is not extreme (not attachment parenting but not the fever method either) so it gives balanced advice and doesn't guilt you for using one method over another. It also provides different options rather than preaching one "right" way.

We followed a lot of the advice from this book. Our pediatrician also recommended strategies described within. Our 5 month is sleeping pretty well which I think is in part due to things we learned from this book.

What a useful book! Karp's books have revolutionized my mothering skills and filled me with confidence. Buy this, the happiest baby book, and the fisher price swing. You will not be sorry!!!

Unable to deny the true accusations he keeps to himself in school so as to not “weird” people out. However, a classmate has taken interest and wants to get to know him and be his friend and help to break him out of his shell, and thus the manga launches.The premise paints a picture of Kou as just a guy who has to stay to himself in order to live out his high school life drama free but can be himself outside of it. I found it to be an emotional premise as high school is the time of one’s life and stays with them and it paints the picture that he’d always have memories of how terrible and lonely his high school life was. Perhaps it is great that he could meet Noshiro, who just transferred to the school, and has nothing to lose by befriending this loner. I think it is this aspect that makes this series feel so different than other series. We don’t suddenly have the character just wanting to get in Kou’s pants and fall in love with him at first sight, but rather we have Noshiro taking extreme and genuine interest in trying to get Kou to experience what school life can really be about. From just confronting him about the rumor, taking interest in making sure people dont hurt his feelings, then some time trying to accept him for who he is, and then taking baby steps that make me genuinely smile and feel happy for Kou as he goes from loner to acquaintance with classmates to even legitimately smiling and laughing with Noshiro, it becomes a sweet story. Further, it is awesome seeing how Kou starts to let Noshiro come into his life ever closer, though it isn’t immediate, and it isn’t without taking a few steps back, but rather its calculated and done with concern for protecting Noshiro from some of the rumors and treatment Kou has faced. This ultimately leads to our favorite friend in storytelling, “Miss Understanding,” to rear her head in full form to lead to tears. However, things resolve with some outside help and some realization for Noshiro that he is experiencing the rises and falls of having a best friendship going on.So overall, this is a great story of acceptance and friendship.There are a few questionable aspects, like Kou’s 26 yr old ex-boyfriend (when Kou is only in 11th grade), Noshiro going over to that guys house.I think there are questions as to the life of the series and its end goal. I’m hoping Kou gets with someone who isn’t Noshiro, and Noshiro gets with Kou’s female friend. Kou is seen to have many non- school contacts suggesting he isn’t a total loner, but it is unexplained how he is meeting other gays.Art is pretty fresh and clear, there is a bonus omake, and author and artist comments.

While this art leaves a little something to be desired in a mass of hot bodied yoai characters it brings something to the table that can be lost in some stories. This book has a lot of heart it's more shonen AI than yoai. About 2 boys in high school one a not so closeted isolated gay kid and the other a newly relocated (seemingly asexual he is in the 11th grade and has had no real sexual interest an anyone) guy how is struggling (light struggle not a slice of life here) with his sexual identity and his ever developing friendship with the class gay kid. I typically go for the hard yoai with tons of sex but every once in a while a sweet story about two boys figuring out what love is will catch my eye. I'm happy I bought this manga

I really enjoy this story. It's more realistic to how many experience the development of their sexuality while in high scgiok. Yeah there is an older guy that someone says that they dated before but I don't think they actually dated. I think the characters says that to throw his friend off again. I think the older friend just helped him realize who he was is all. It's hard navigating something like that on your own especially when it isn't supported by the community around you. I think this story is a cute slice of life closer to an actual experience.

I was definitely left intrigued at the end of the volume. The art is lovely and I think the story is refreshing. Can’t wait for volume 2!

That Blue Sky Feeling should be fairly popular - it has a sweet, slow burn type of romance that is somewhat rare in a lot of manga in this genre. But at the same time, both main characters are very underdeveloped and there's not a lot of world building. It's hard to root for either when we have to take so much for granted and fill in too many blanks.Story: Noshiro has moved around a lot and is an easy going guy well prepared for another year in a new high school. But on his first day he notices a classmate who seems left out and ignored by the others. When he asks why, he's told it is because they think that boy may be a 'homo' and they don't want to associate with him. Sanada (the pariah) knows who and what he is and has decided to just withdraw rather than deal with the discomfort/awkwardness his situation arises. But Noshiro hates the ugliness and decides to pursue a friendship with the recalcitrant Sanada. That friendship may turn into something more as an otherwise straight Noshiro discovers that he has more than friendship thoughts about Sanada.The story really hinges on Noshiro - a sweet, nice, every-boy that isn't too handsome or smart or overidealized. Sanada is quiet, reserved, and somewhat standoffish but never really mean or obnoxious, as can sometimes be the case in manga. In that, this is a really refreshing manga where we don't have to deal with boys who are too good looking or obvious seme or uke roles. Instead, it is two average boys and a very slow burn but sweet romance.There are things I really disliked about the manga. For one, Sanada has a 26 year old ex boyfriend who takes pains to befriend Noshiro and offer 'friendly' advice. I found it far too creepy and disturbing, especially when Noshiro blithely accepts an invite to 'dinner' at the ex boyfriend's house. Honestly, if the ex likes one young boy I couldn't help but feel creeped out that Noshiro was next. It's not that kind of manga but it was a deal breaker for me.I also had issues with Sanada. yes, he's reserved and deservedly so after all his friends turned on him when they suspected his orientation. But at the same time, it's hard to understand Noshiro's fixation with him, even beyond that of wanting to 'right an injustice' and pick up a sad puppy like Sanada. Noshiro is a big, kind-hearted lug but Sanada's characterization is paper thin. So Noshiro's preoccupation with helping Sanada just felt off and forced.Because of the two issues above, I never believed in either character. I didn't have that "butterflies in the stomach' reaction the blurb promised and I really didn't feel compelled to further read this story. Perhaps others will be less creeped out by the ex boyfriend salaryman, though. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Fondue is suppose to be easy , delicious and a fun way to spend time with family and friends. Ann understood that and packed a great book filled with those recipes.

I am a 13 year old boy (using his mom's account with her permission to post a review) and yes I have read all of Robert Beatty's books but none of them were quite like Willa of the Wood. Willa was different than Serafina in alot of ways but was still an easy to love character. The story was enthralling and made me want to turn the page and read more. There were no dull moments and the entire story was worth every minute I took to read it. I actually read the entire book in less than 24 hours and I stayed up all night reading and no, I don't usually binge read books! Actually this was my first binge read. I know some boys are turned away from books because the main character is female but I think this should be an exception regardless of your gender. Mr. Beatty does not write like any other authors, the way he writes draws you into the story hook, line and sinker! He weaves a tale and you can personally relate to the characters and by the end you feel like you were a part of the story. I also recommend the Serafina Series written by Mr. Robert Beatty.

I received an advanced reader copy of Willa of the Wood which is the first of a new series for middle school students written by author Robert Beatty.Mr. Beatty shares Willa’s perspective as he weaves a magical story that blends the life of this young night spirit into the rich local history of the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee people. Willa lives with her 137-year-old mamaw who is one of the last surviving woodwitches from the dwindling clan of Faeran people. This 12-year-old girl has the ability to blend into her forest surroundings and can communicate with nature. Willa has a great respect for her heritage and is determined to preserve the old ways of her clan.In the beginning of this action-packed mystery, Willa unwillingly has become her clan’s best thief. She is forced to go out and steal from the human day-folk each evening, by the padaren, who is the fearsome and selfish clan leader.This intriguing story evolves with increasing suspense as Willa’s loyalty and strength of character is evident as she makes important decisions during her interactions and encounters in an enchanted forest with trees, the river, wolves, bears, deer, otters, homesteaders, Cherokee people, her own clan, and the frightening newcomers with the huge destructive “iron machines” that are “murdering trees.” Willa shows great maturity, compassion, and loyalty as she faces one life-threatening event after another while trying to protect those she loves. The imagery simply lifts me into the setting where he describes the mountain, “. . . white mist of the Smoky Mountains breath floated near its rounded top out across the world . . .” I still think about the “. . . great healing lake of the bears. . .” that he so beautifully described. I continue to think about the lake that “. . . felt as if the light of the sun had become liquid . . .”  I strongly recommend this book as an especially great read aloud for families or classroom use. The various science, history, and cultural themes make it a wonderful book for classroom teachers and this book will be an excellent resource for teaching context clues. Willa of the Wood

The fact that my kids beg and plead for me to read another chapter of this book every night and are willing to forego TV so I can read more to them warrants 5 stars. Plus, Robert Beatty is a beautiful writer to the point you can visualize the scenes in each chapter.However, I feel conflicted as a parent when it comes to the content. This book, while it does contain some good, well-written and moving messages about family, hope, overcoming fear and love, it also has some very dark and disturbing parts including violence, kidnapping, abuse, and murder, all of which frankly, make me feel like a marginal parent - kind of like giving my kids a Snickers bar for dinner when I should be offering a salad (just a hypothetical here).So, in truthfulness, I struggle with whether the content of the book is outweighed by the fact that my kids’ passion for reading and constant discussion and chatter about what they think will happen next in the book has been sparked by this author, darker content and all.Parents know their kids best, but the jury is still out for me. I definitely think this author is best for the tween or older crowd, although I know my 8 year olds would vehemently disagree!

As I was sitting in my chair, with my black cat Serafina in my lap. I have to admit that I was somewhat disappointed that Beatty's new book "Willa of the Wood" would be introducing a new character and it would not be a continuation of the Serafina stories. However, as I began to read I realized that this was going to be an amazing adventure! With the same descriptive detail that Beatty described the Biltmore Estate, he has continued this with his depiction of Willa and the world in which she lives. Willa is an ever-changing and lovable little spirit. Her daily life is full of sadness,chaos, and unimaginable circumstances. Willa is able to overcome these obstacles with the gifts from the forest, courageous animals, and love.The story has as many twists and turns as the river that flows through the forest.To my surprise, I did recognize an old friend or two along the journey! When you think all is lost, something happens and changes Willa's life forever, so have a tissue in hand, After reading this book, I can't decide which character I want to hear more about next...either way I know I won't be disappointed. Can't wait!

Wealth of Knowledge and Awesome DiagramsThe book Principles of Neural Science by Kandel et. al. has been a fantastic compliment to the class I’m currently enrolled in at Iowa State. The immense amount of knowledge contained in the book enhances my learning and has helped to develop my understanding of neural science. The diagrams in the book are well illustrated and display the contents of the book effectively. This is a required book for graduation in my discipline and is for advanced learners only. The subject matter within the book might be difficult to grasp without some prior knowledge of neural science.The information in this book is outstanding and is unlike any other neural science textbook that I have read during my college career. With that said, the book is very “heavy”, in both weight and content. I haven’t weighed it myself, but it is the heaviest textbook I have had in my four years of college. However, with the relevant amount of information in the book, it is a price I’m willing to pay!I would recommend this textbook for people seeking an advanced education in the field of neural science. The book has complicated information, but with the detailed diagrams and case studies provided, the reader gains a better understanding of neural science.

When they illustrate neurons with empty outlines and maybe throw in a nucleus, they are leaving out most of the fascinating details of how neurons actually work. Those details can be found here!I just finished my undergrad in cell bio/biotech and hope to go to grad school in a field involving neural science, so I bought this book to get a head start. Now I wish I'd bought it earlier in my undergrad career, as I find learning details helps with retaining information.For a textbook of this size and with this much information, it is quite reasonably priced. I think splitting it into two volumes would have been a wise move, as you can't really lie down and read it without being crushed by its weight.

This textbook was easy to read, digest, and comprehend, making neuroscience much more accessible to those who do not specialize in the field. The diagrams/flowcharts and pictures in the book were also very helpful. There is just the right amount of depth and detail in the book to fully understand a given system without becoming too overwhelming. Loved it as someone aspiring to get into medicine and exploring different specialties in the professional health fields!

This book arrived swiftly, just as promised. It was much heftier than I'd expected (so taking it to school often was out of the question). I was obligated to read this for a graduate course, and, despite some of the more dense chapters being a bit tedious, I rather enjoyed the explanations overall. I would warn/recommend anyone who picks up this book to have a solid foundation of neuroanatomy first, or else it will be a struggle to get through a chapter. The return process was quite easy and the rental company was very helpful for me. :)

Not your typical textbook, be sure to try a sample of this item before you buy because many of the authors within use Neuroscience jargon as if speaking to a fellow researcher when describing their specialty areas.Also, I read these kinds of books for fun, but some Instructors may find that it can serve as a good supplement to many biology, bioethics, neural science, neuroscience, and psychology courses BUT lacks the organization and fluidity one should expect from a textbook.

I am a urologist specializing in neurologically impaired patients so I read Kandels newest edition once they become available. This edition is superb with colorful and easily understood illustrations, diagrams and radiology studies including PET scans. The print is very legible and the spacing is perfect. It took a month to read the 1700 pages but its the best book i have read these last 10 years with Bruce Alberts Molecular Biology of the Cell whose 6th edition should be out later this year. I really found the molecular biology and anatomy chapter the perfect reintroduction for me. It provided me with the perfect detail and understanding for a paper I am writing on Strokes and their Effect on the Bladder. The disease specific Chapters on Stroke, Parkinsons, Multiple Sclerosis each are well detailed but with excellent explanations of the principles necessary for the clinician to get a strong hold on this relevant material. These chapters should be standard reading for all medical students and residents. The radiological studies chosen to illustrate these disease entities are the best i have seen and explain what is important to know and understand for each type of stroke, progressive MS or non progressive MS. I purchased it early after its release new for 70 dollars so with its success it will soon be a classic at 100 plus dollars and will still be worth every penny. I will now use this to teach my students the fundamentals of a neurological exam and to emphasis the commonly seen neurological disease seen by urologists. I have a degree in chemistry. I found it to be an important addition to my library. Book covers the basic chemistry such as amines and other biochemistry in the brain. From my perspective, the biology is understandable and touches upon aspects of normal functioning and abnormal aspects such as mental illness. I consider this book as valued addition and look forward to years of use.
