First printed the early 1950's, this is the 51st printing of the book. It contains ten classics from the first printing 50 years ago, and ten newer stories. Stories include (1) Momotaro the Peach Boy, a boy who is found in a peach by a childless couple, who goes off to fight ogres with his animal friends when he reaches his teens; (2) The Magic Tea Kettle about the badger who is mistaken for a kettle; and (3) Silly Saburo, the hilarious and entertaining story about a boy and his misadventures, all becuase he does exactly what he is told. Also among the twenty are (4) The Crab and the Monkey, about a plotting monket and his hapless friend, a crab, and a riceball and persimmon seed; and (5) Why The Jellyfish Has No Bones, about a jellyfish and an evil octopus.

Good sampling of Japanese folk tales, but:1) some stories have disturbing/weird details that I omitted for my 5-year-old daughter. Old woman cutting off a sparrow’s tongue?.. A bunny rabbit who wants to jump into the caldron to boil itself alive as a present to a guest? A puppy being killed by a neighbor, and a gift tree growing over its corpse? As they say “it’s unclear what they audience is”. Don’t get me wrong: I like spooky and macabre stuff myself, but I was planning to read this to a little kid. Having said that, this happens only in a few stories. Most of the rest are fine.2) the drawings are not really good and not really made in an East Asian style. They are mostly in “7th grader learns to draw” style, which can be endearing in and of itself, but not necessarily in this literary setting.3) some of the names were clearly mistranslated. I don’t know Japanese, but it was obvious that some names which were supposed to be poetic were clunky in translation.Overall, it’s a nice book though. My daughter liked it, when I augmented some of the stories and omitted some of the creepier ones.

Being half Japanese, these stories remind me of my mom ... Just be aware that the Japanese like to teach their children lessons and some of the stories do not have the “happily ever after” endings we are used to in the United States. I purchased 2 of these that I gave to adults in Japan studying English. They had familiar stories written in English and they loved it. Sweet illustrations also.

This is a book from my childhood. I was sopleased that they had this available. You'll enjoyit if you like tales of Japanese folklore. The Rabbitin the Moon is a good example. I grew upbelieving in this tale and to this day, still look forthe Rabbit in in the Moon!

Stories from my childhood. I couldn't believe I found this book almost exactly as mine from 50 years ago. Given as a gift and the recipient loved it.

I grew up with all of these stories and it's a treat to share them with my kids. While some of the stories or content are a bit dated or slightly difficult to relate to (given the translation from japanese to english), it's still super cool.

One of my wife's favorite books as a child it has brought back great memories through a series of teaching stories.

This book is very special to me as it was a dear part of my childhood growing up in a Japanese American household in the early 1960s. When I was about three years old, one of my "uncles" gave this book to me with a pink hardcover and it has stayed dear to my heart since. I was quite delighted to see it still in print and being offered here on Amazon. What's even more amazing, is that from what I can tell by the image previews for this newest edition, the illustrations are the very same ones as my forty-some-odd year old book. This collection of stories would be similar to a Japanese Grimm's Fairy Tales and were also part of my father's childhood in 1920s Japan. Overall, they are quite simple and to the point and have a cuteness typical of Japanese stories. In recent years, my ex-girlfriend had enjoyed listening to me tell her these stories at bedtime even from my 40 year memory. I'm sure I've mangled some of them and combined them into a hybrid monkey, ogre, old man, cookie tale. I've been meaning to find my original copy, but now I know I can relive my childhood with a fresh new copy.

Aaaah, great book...brings back memories of all the Japanese fables I read as a child. Bought this for my granddaughter. She loves it. The book has colorful pictures and great stories. Not a board book, so keep them away from unsupervised prying little hands.

#63,462 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I have read many books about how to write memoir, or how to write about yourself. The answer is given in this highly readable book.Read this book, and if what you have in mind is to write about your life, the answer is simple, Write about what you know about your life. Don't write any old thing or about it all from the time you were born until the time you think you have figured out how it will all probably end. Write instead about those ever memorable events in your lifetime to date that taught you a valuable lesson or made you more humble for the experience you had occasion to share. Your life is not a totality of "this happened and then this happened, forevermore." It's the best stories, shared or experienced, that you recall and tell with splendor and modesty. Better yet, read the book, and you will learn what I mean.

Zinsser seems to be a special man--tender and warm, with a voice of authenticity and kindness. He desires to impart a message, or few, that will serve to help a writer in her craft. I found this to be true here and there throughout the book, and in those moments, I underlined the phrases, such as:"Write about things that are important to you, not about what you think readers will want to read, or editors will want to publish or agents will want to sell." - or -"If you put your writing in the form of a quest you will make a connection with your readers that will surprise you with its power." - and -"All writing is talking to someone else on paper. Talk like yourself."I enjoyed those poignant statements. They brought me clarity in an instant. The parts of the book that left more to be desired were when Zinsser actually began sharing various life stories (his memoir voice). They felt dry to me, boring, and not the result of poor writing, or writing style, but rather my own lack of interest in the subject matter. I appreciate having read the book; however, it isn't one that I feel compelled to recommend.Happy Reading!

William Zinsser’s charming “Writing about Your Life” is less a how-to book in writing creative autobiography than it is well-told stories of fascinating moments in the author’s life. Early on in the book, these remembrances serve as illustrations for Zinsser’s points about memoir writing. As the book continues, there is less instruction and more storytelling.Zinsser notes at the start of Chapter 3, “The problem is that an interesting life doesn’t make an interesting memoir. Only small pieces of a life make an interesting memoir. The rest is just getting through the day....” This book is chockablock with engaging and amusing “pieces of a life.” To be sure, Zinsser offers solid, useful advice on writing, e.g., that “ultimately it’s people--memorable people--who make certain places stick in our minds forever. Look for those people, wherever you go, and tell us how their story intersected with your life” (p. 79). But it’s really the author’s anecdotes about meeting memorable people in fascinating places that captivated this reader. A writer would do well to absorb the advice, and mostly, just imitate the master.

What I thought would be an instruction manual on how to write memoirs turned out to be a moving memoir about the author’s life. Embedded in a series of short narratives, many of them excerpts from previously published articles, are William Zinsser’s comments that illustrate how and why his approach to writing one's story is positive and effective. I discovered through reading this book about writing about your life, that I was increasingly immersed in the author’s life experiences. One of my favorite quotes toward the end of the book is, “Most people are some kind of pilgrimage, whether or not they recognize it as such. If you put your writing in the form of a quest you will make a connection with your readers that will surprise you with its power.” I came away wishing I could have met Mr. Zinsser, who led such a rich life, or sat in any of his inspiring class lectures to hear his stories in person. Short of that, I will refer back to this book to revisit its many lessons.

I've been taking a writing class, with focus on memoir writing. At times I've been puzzled trying to understand where autobiography and memoir writing mesh, or don't mesh. Zinsser's book gives numerous examples of memoirs. Essentially, memoirs more often describe smaller life incidents and lessons learned. When a person's larger life experiences are described, they again focus on the individual's personal experience of the event and, again, lessons learned. I found Zinsser easy to read and appreciated his use of examples to make his points. Many of the stories come from prior books he has written, so those who have read prior works may experience deja vu.

William Zinsser died recently. He leaves a great legacy. He and my now ex-husband taught me to write, which is how I make my living. I recommend Mr. Zinsser's book, On Writing Well, to everyone. I am coaching an aspiring memoirist now and added this book, Writing About Your Life, to her list of recommended reading in addition to On Writing Well. I think it's wonderful. I wish I wrote as well as he did.

This book was helpful for me when I planned to write my own book. As I began to work on my second book I decided to purchase this (I'd read a library copy previously). I have a small collection of books about writing that I own. All of them were first borrowed from the library and purchased later because of their value and contribution to my understanding and appreciation of the craft. This particular book reads so easily and enjoyably that sometimes it needs to be reread to revisit the point of his example or assessment. This isn't a failing of the book, it's simply not as dry as other instructional texts.

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—The sixth title in this series, this book aims to foster a positive entrepreneurial spirit in young readers. It offers a fun approach to a difficult concept, beginning with an explanation about what an entrepreneur should not be about (money, elitism) and moving forward to exploring more inspiring motives (problem-solving, curiosity, the desire to help others). Featuring diverse characters, the illustrations provide most of the story line, with a young girl named Rae looking for an inventive solution for dog washing. Young readers will delight in the wacky ideas (a dog-washing robot) and will feel a sense of accomplishment and wonder with Rae's success in the final spread. The text does employ important but challenging vocabulary words, such as entrepreneur, initiative, and innovative. VERDICT While children may not select this title on their own, it would be a useful addition to collections to inspire creativity.—Jane Hebert, Glenside Public Library District, Glendale Heights, IL

Even though this book is recommended for ages 4+, my 2-year old daughter loves Little Pickle Press books so I bought her a copy and I'm glad I did. We read it together several times a day, my daughter can now better appreciate what I do, and she is already talking about starting her own business. As an entrepreneur and change maker, I can't imagine a book that could more embody the values I strive to pass on to my daughter. Ask "What if?" questions. Persevere even when other people tell you, "No." Take risks. Harness your creativity. Use technology to solve problems. Honor your voice - always. This book is beautiful and downright genius, and I'm telling every mom and fellow women's empowerment colleague and friend I know to purchase a copy.

Great book for teaching students about creating

The content is great but there were some pages that were printed twice. I think there's a manufacturer's error with the book. I love that this book can encourage girls to keep working towards their goals despite obstacles.

The authors and illustrator have taken a very adult-like topic and, quite impressively, made it so relatable and accessible to children. You may never, ever have thought to encourage an entrepreneurial spirit in your children, but after reading this book you will! These are not only great lessons for how to be an entrepreneur, but for how to tackle any challenge in life - no matter the size and scope. The whole book is done in a light-hearted enough way (with adorable illustrations) that even young elementary school aged children will be able to understand the concept and very likely catch the spirit, too.

A good child understanding of what it means to be an entrepreneur.

Love. Love. Love this book. What a creative book to inspire children to think of new ideas and get excited about them. There is so much I appreciate about the illustrations -- the fact that the entrepeneur is a girl, the diversity, the looks of determination and pride, etc. It's just fabulous. Highly recommend this book!

This book is so great at simplifying the idea of entrepreneurship for kids so that they can understand the concept and dream up their own ideas. The text is able to communicate the general concept well for the suggested age group, while the illustrations beautifully tell a specific story about one girl with an idea and succeed in making the book even more accessible and fun.

Very cute book for little learners
