Review

My wife and I decided to get scuba certified for our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. It was just one of those bucket list things we’d always wanted to do—to renew our vows on the bottom of the ocean. We did this using only sign language, of course. Picture thumbs up for “better” and thumbs down for “worse,” and you’ll get the idea. The actual art of scuba is mostly about learning to breathe with a mask on. First-timers suddenly realize they are actually under water, and their natural tendency is to start breathing too fast. In golf, the number one rule is to keep your head down. In baseball, it’s to keep your eye on the ball. In scuba diving, it’s just breathe. Keith’s book brings that scuba diving lesson to dry land. His story seems like something a screenwriter wouldn’t even try to write. It’s one chapter after another of a life’s downward spiral. But somehow through it all, he was able to keep breathing. He’s a walking miracle in many ways, but the first rule of scuba will always ring true for him: just breathe. My hope is that you will see parts of yourself in Keith’s story and realize that none of us live too far away from the grace of God. I hope you will see addiction for the monster that it is and seek some help before it is too late for you. So read on. Keep your mask on. Don’t freak out. Just breathe. And discover the hope you need.—Tim Harlow, senior pastor, Parkview Christian Church, Orland Park, Illinois; the author of Life on Mission Sometimes “amazing grace” seems like just a phrase or only the title of an old hymn. And then you read the story of a life like Keith’s, and it becomes clear once again that this grace is a power stronger than death and it’s the hope of the world. Read about it—and come home.—John Ortberg, senior pastor, Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, CAJust Breathe is the riveting depiction of a remarkably transformed life. Keith’s journey reveals one of the most powerful stories of redemption I have ever witnessed in over thirty-five years of pastoring.—Pastor Jude Fouquier, lead pastor, The City Church, Ventura, CA Ever wondered if God does miracles? Ever wondered if He can do miracles today, perhaps in your life? With Just Breathe, you hold in your hands the story of a real-life modern miracle. Keith’s story can be your story and reminds us that none of us are beyond hope.—Gene Appel, senior pastor, Eastside Christian Church, Anaheim, CA  Watching God transform Keith and his family has been one of the greatest privileges of my life! If you feel like you are buried under shame, that you’re too far gone or that you could never get beyond your past, this book is for you. There is hope for you! Keith’s story continues to be a vivid reminder to me that Jesus doesn’t just make us better—He makes us new!—Jodi Hickerson, programming director, Mission Church, Ventura, CA If you feel like you’ve somehow outrun God’s grace, think again. Keith’s story about his journey to freedom is proof that God will go to any lengths to save anybody, including you.—Mike Foster, founder of People of the Second Chance; creator of the Rescue Academy; author of People of the Second Chance and Freeway

This is an awesome book! I picked it up and couldn't put it down until I had read the whole thing! The author shares his real life story how God was faithful to pursue him and work in his life even while he was still a prodigal. It is a story of how God is a redeeming God. He can take the worst mistakes you have made in your life or the worst things that have happened to you and turn them completely around and use them to be a blessing instead. Easy to read and to the point- it will make you weep tears of joy and give you hope- no matter what circumstances you may be facing in your life. I highly recommend it!

Incredible testimony to God's regenerating power. Well-written too.

I loved this book. I could be the Keith this was written for. Not the hard core stuff but a lot of the same demons

Excellent read. Love the raw honesty of the authors story culminating to committing his life to Christ.

Very good book, Loved it!

Such a great testimony!! Loved it.

Such an incredible story. I gave it to my father who is dealing with some stuff, but after reading the forward and introduction I got a bit carried away and wound up reading the whole thing. I loved how honest Keith was about his life, detailing his daily pursuits and rough-around-the-edges living. This contrasts beautifully with his transformation after encountering the real God who loves dearly and is full of grace and mercy. As a Christian who has grown up in the church, this book reminds me that God loves all people and I too must choose to patiently love and come alongside the broken, but also to acknowledge that I am a work in progress. The raw truth of Keith's story is empowering and I pray that it brings hope to those who need something more than the weight of judgement and condemnation that the world seems so eager to heap upon one another. the bottom line is that this book is a captivating story followed by some very real, easy to understand, truths about how to break free from your old life and allow God's transforming love to free, heal, and restore you,

JUST BREATHE takes us through Repult's journey to brokenness and then shows us how God has begun and continued healing him and putting him back together. It is a book not just about redemption or addiction, but a bit of both combined. After following Repult's journey, he's included a list of tools we can use to allow Jesus and God fully into our lives to heal us and continue to use us.Well written, insightful, and useful, I think particularly the tools section was helpful. He discusses the link between amends and forgiveness, which I have, in the past, felt was overlooked. This book is not just for recovering addicts who are trying to find redemption; it's a book to remind us all that we must be willing to admit our complete brokenness before we can be healed.

“The data, much of which is precious anecdotal material from the field's most creative explorer, stirs the mind to consider new possibilities. It is a wonderfully open and inviting text.” ― Richard D. Mann

From the Back Cover

Here Grof presents a useful model of the psyche--a model extended by his thirty years of studying non-ordinary states of consciousness. It is useful for understanding such phenomena as shamanism, mysticism, psychedelic states, spontaneous visionary experiences, and psychotic episodes. The model is also useful in explaining the dynamics of experiential psychotherapies and a variety of sociopolitical manifestations such as war and revolution. This book might have been entitled Beyond Drugs. The second part describes the principles and process of the non-pharmacological technique developed by the author and his wife Christina for self-exploration and for psychotherapy. Grof explores in detail the components of this technique. He describes its method, its effective mechanisms, as well as its goals and potential. Its practice is simple, since it utilizes the natural healing capacity of the psyche.

Synopsis:This book is composed of two distinct parts, which are actually identified in the subtitle. The first of the two is a long litany of Grof's explanation of dimensions of consciousness. Within this portion of the book Grof identifies various perspectives and interpretations of psychological gestalts, experiences of mystical states, psychedelic states and correlation of his perinatal matrices. Here there is a strong influence of Jungian philosophy and the emergence of various elements of Humanistic psychology. In the second part of the book Grof enters the stage of giving an overview of his holotropic theory and transitions into the important implications of this therapy along with aspects of psychedelic experience. While partitioned, relevant continuity does exist between the two.The Objective Perspective: Grof's material is not for everyone, especially the laypeople. Had I not been a psychology major and a frequent reader of philosophy, mythology and familiar with indigenous tribal and Eastern cultures I would have been emphatically lost. The material on the dimensions of consciousness is complex and intrinsically connected with various archetypes of mythology. The references that are made throughout this material are something, I think, is of integral importance for actually comprehending the information. So unless you have some background in mythology, psychology and indigenous tribal and Eastern cultures then I do not recommend this book because it delves into advanced psychology and integrates references that will just become perpetually obfuscating. Each of the dimensions of consciousness that Grof discusses actually deserves a complete volume for itself. This portion of the book is probably the most contentious when it comes to relation to the academic and scientific fields. A brief overview of each is just not adequate for instigating legitimate interest into these levels of consciousness. While I disagree with Grof on some of his interpretations, there are some instances where his position is not clearly distinguished from a psychoanalytic interpretation or a literal belief in the result. On page 284, the last sentence of the first paragraph Grof asserts quite erroneously that he has proven the thesis of his book "that there is no basic difference between psychedelic experiences and nonordinary states of consciousness induced by other techniques." This is superficial. You cannot hyperventilate and experience "basically" the same experience that you do with psilocybin; you cannot experience "basically" the experience with LSD that you do with dimethyltryptamine; all of these states are distinct in their own regard and affluent in profundity and alien nature to any other experience. I am not defaming non-psychedelic mystical states by any means, or am I elevating psychedelic experiences as more hierarchical, but they are separate from each other. The Subjective Perspective: I applaud Grof for his very professional, scientific (for what science will accept) and scholarly approach to the realms of altered states; he adds class to the endeavor of self-exploration. He has given a new perspective of mystical experiences over all. These experiences are essential in expanding our knowledge of the depths and dimensions of the human psyche. The brain as a cellular structure may be subject to the laws of physics, but the manifestation of the Mind is independent of physics and linear-narrow-fundamentalistic-science which attempts to negate anything it cannot readily explain, ironically trouncing the scientific method and process, which essentially is Positivism in its prime. The nature of Mind transcends all of this myopia. As a true "medicine-man" of society he is concerned with the therapeutic potential of interpreting mystical states as opposed to completely dismissing them based on mechanistic science. He asserts that the dimensions of consciousness are a "fascinating phenomena...that should be systematically studied...[, and] [t]o discard...these experiences and the conceptual challenges associated with them just because they do not fit the current paradigms in science certainly is not the best example of a scientific approach" (108). I admire Grof for going against the grain of his field and trekking into the taboo and unconventional, that is the way we elicit Novelty. It is far too easy to "go with the flow," but it takes true devotion to break beyond the borders of acceptance, which often makes one the mockery of a particular field. Grof admonishes against frivolous and unstructured self-exploration with psychedelics, which I concur. Entheogens are a very precarious, but profound, experience. They are not for everyone, and I never advocate anyone to take them, because those who can actually trek those realms and return without psychosis is very limited. On this issue I agree with Timothy Leary, there is only about ten percent of the population that is truly mature enough, intellectual enough and psychologically sound enough to experiment with these substances. Recreational use is precipitous and reckless abandon to those of us that utilize these in a ritualistic and scientific exploratory method of understanding the depths of consciousness to gain novel insights into ontological and philosophical paradigms. This literary work is essential for all credible psychonauts that fit the previously described candidate. Having come into reference to Timothy Leary, Grof is definitely distinguished from Leary; and Terence McKenna for that matter. Each of these three men have exclusive and venerable properties about them, and other aspects one would like to discard, albeit, each has their distinct territory. While I originally came into the entheogenic revolution by way of Martin Ball I then followed up references in his book to Terence McKenna's philosophy. I later progressed to Leary, and now to Grof; Grof is more scientifically sophisticated with his approach, almost to a fault. Leary is my immanent mentor of all; our ideals for culture, society and philosophy are identical, which I acquired and refined prior to even having knowledge of him. The only difference is that his tool of choice was LSD. His philosophy is astounding and his affinity with Socrates and evolving culture through NOVEL philosophy is commensurate to my own. In the beginning, as a psychologist, he started in the way of scientific interest but Harvard abrogated those studies and subsequently did not offer another contract to Leary. The most unfortunate thing Leary did for the movement was bring too much attention to it, and to fundamentalists back then, which were in all facets of society, he was the "devil," so they mounted an Inquisition on the Mind and initiated the ominous drug war. (After all it was the drugs that made woman want to work and have rights, blacks to want to have rights, and the college students to protest the war and oppose a draft.) McKenna has his exclusive realm in the nature of reviving botanical shamanism into the contemporary culture, along with various cultural and philosophic imports intermingled with theories of alien worlds, new dimensions and novelty. Grof has utilized his interest in these substances to reorient certain rigid conventions in psychology and psychotherapy, which illuminates his scientific approach by and through experimentation. All of the three stands alone, but their unity is that they realized the profundity and novel insights that are to be garnered from this realm of the taboo. In closing, the brain is a mysterious quantum tool that has an obvious affinity and, possibly, an evolutionary precursor with entheogenic properties that manifested its neurochemistry. Negating this undermines the complexity of the mind-brain paradigm and, in the words of Grof: "The future task for serious research remains unbiased scientific scrutiny of the mostly anecdotal claims and modern reformulation of the underlying theories" (149). - D.R.Thomas

Seems like an interesting topic but the language tends to be clinical making it very hard to read as a lay person.

I had hoped to learn more about the actual techniques used in the holotopic sessionsbut most of that information is already available from kundalini breath techniques andpranayama. That aside, the book is fascinating and well written. If you are familiar withJungian psychology, archetypes, and symbols of mythology you will deeply enjoy thisbook.

I must say I am impressed with Prof. Grof. This book has opened my mind far and wide. As a student of non-traditional psychology I would like to see this item as one of compulsory lectures. Great introduction to Transpersonal Psychology & Psychiatry, Psychedelic Therapy, and a very comprehensive guide to the studies of consciousness! Not an easy book. It tears the walls of what we consider "normal thinking" or accepted (yet outdated) "logic".As I write I am ordering other books by Stanislav and Christine Grof.

The book is clearly organized, with good and sensible examples. Makes you think in all the amount of knowledge that we humans ignore. And all the explorable universe of posibilities .However, the use of drugs, is complex, dificult and unadvisable for most, but the very few well prepared, like Dr. Grof, and in a very special enviroment.Thank you

A book to read and re-read for me plus a validation of what I have felt since childhood. Any one who wants to know themselves and others and looking for soul searching truth would benefit from reading this and other works by Grof and authors in his bibliography. Plus, a look at quantum physics, as well, for more light reading. (A joke of course)

As a Certified Holotropic Breathwork Practitioner, this book was the original guidance for training in this powerful introspective healing modality. I recommend it. Dr. Grof's work is exceptional.

Thank you.

A father of three, Hallgrimur divides his time between Reykjavik and Hrísey Island.

The plot of The Hitman's Guide to Housekeeping is fairly conventional. Tomislav Boksiæ or as he calls himself Toxic is a professional hitman. His last professional kill brings the entire weight of the terrestrial world on his head. His next hit, his first murder (he will explain the distinction) will bring the entire weight of celestial world on his soul. He will find himself a fish out of water in a country (Iceland) with no army, no guns, barely any police where he must confront his own need for redemption. All of this we will know within a few pages of what is a relatively short book.On this fairly Well worn premise, Icelandic born Hallgrimur Helgason will build a slick, dark, driving narrative. Dark is probably the most important word here. To say the humor in this book is black is to say the far side of the moon is not recommended for the growth of sunflowers. Just as "Toxic" had to assume different identities to survive we will watch him detail his many past lives even as he strips them off on his way to redemption. This may sound like a spoiler, but the details and the unexpected turns are well paced to keep your attention. As I said dark humor is too light of the term. At some point what some might consider macabre becomes horrific. The genesis of Toxic will take you to some of the worst of the recent Balkans war and consist of perhaps too many casual discussions of imposed death. The intent may be to push your incredulity over the top but some will be turned off by the casual narration of mayhem.Given all of this how can I recommend this book? Hallgrimur Helgason is a good writer. His use of language, his pacing of major events, and his refusal to keep his straightforward plot fully predictable makes this a good read. (Possible spoiler alert) Reading this in the Kindle edition means that you will find the abrupt ending that much more surprising. In hard copy you would realize you were running out of pages. In the Kindle edition you simply run out of text. The implication of this statement is that the author succeeds in writing a story that will leave you wanting at least a little bit more. In defense of the author's morbid recounting of certain events, I remind you that the Baltic war unfolded in front of the West with most of the world doing too little and that too late to mitigate the soul crushing effects of this fratricidal war. That being said, if the only thing in this book that offends you is the generous use of the so-called F bomb and the casual sex you may want to use this book to question your value system.I suppose The Hitman's Guide to Housekeeping, is generally considered a crime drama. I suggest it should leave you thinking. The quality of the writing will keep you reading.

The writing style and humor wears off by the 4th chapter and you're stuck a one way ticket to boredom, and then the question creeps in soon after as to whether it's worth putting up with to the end. I cannot believe someone called this good, refreshing, or anything else not negative in their review...truly, this book isn't good enough for my garbage can I'll use it start fires with next time I go camping. This is NOT the fun novel Amazon made it out to be, I wish I'd bought bricks instead and hit myself in the head with them I'd have saved more brain cells than this trash stripped from me.UPDATE - A year later and I'm still hoping Doc shows up in the Delorean to take me back to the time I put into this book...GREAT SCOTT!!!

I'll be honest: I'm late to the party. I haven't read any of Stieg Larsson's books nor any of the other thrillers that have come out of Iceland in the last few years. I kept meaning to but other books kept catching my eye. I'm glad this is the one I chose to read.Helgason's hitman Toxic made for a unique narrator and a likable antihero who had a better grasp of American pop culture than I do. His perspectives on both the country of Iceland and the people he comes in contact with there are entertaining and felt believable for a hired gun with over sixty kills to his name. His journey toward redemption was daunting and often painful but his perspective on the whole thing kept the story from becoming dreary or depressing - which isn't to say it wasn't dark. The memories from his years in the Serb-Croatian War as well as recollections of his various hits made it a very dark read, but somehow Helgason still managed to keep the mood light and gave Toxic a sarcastic sense of humor that carried him through the more distressing moments.Even though the pop culture references did wear thin after a while and I felt the inevitable climax could have been further developed, it was a fun book to read.Give this one a try if you like your violence tinged with comedy and your humanity scorched and charred.

The Powell "Bungalow Bathrooms" and "Bungalow Kitchens" books turned out to be just right for inbetweener remodelers, like us. We bought a true Denver Bungalow and wanted to modernize while keeping the old touches, adding some new old touches, and generally remaining true to the spirit of the style. Didn't have the inclination or the money to tear out things that worked just in order to do an authentic and absolutely accurate restoration, but wanted what we did do to look and feel right. (I did save the ice block delivery door and the vegetable cooler with the outside access.)These books show you what works and what doesn't and is loaded with photos and text that will give you lots of ideas. We poked around many salvage warehouses and after research and looking at books like this we knew a lot more about what we were looking at and where it was supposed to go.The upshot is that maybe we now have second hand rescued stained glass windows from Chicago in our Denver house, but still. These are cool, sharp, and inspirational books.

My house is a craftsman style house that was built in the 1920's. I bought these books to help during the restoration/remodel of our bathroom. I purchased the Bungalow Kitchen book as well. I highly recommend this book to anyone doing a remodel on an older home. It offers so many pointers, and a couple different levels of restoration: obsessive...(which gives you the do's and dont's for a truly authentic restoration), and another, which explains which modern materials and appliances can offer the same look without having to go to a salvage yard to redo your house:) LOVE this book!!

I bought this book to get ideas on renovating my 1930 bungalow bathroom. Although the book focuses more on restoration than renovation, I still found it a wonderful source of ideas. Filled with lots of full color pictures of restored and well-preserved bathrooms, the book is worth its price for the pictures alone. The text covers both historic and current issues and is a wealth of information. Each section of the book has a chapter called "Obsessive Restoration" for those serious about historic integrity, but also offers a "Compromise Solution" for those of us who need to balance 21st century demands. We found the book extremely valuable in picking layout, hardware, fixtures, walls, and flooring. It really helped us to design a bathroom that meets the needs of a modern family, yet which blends in with the historic values of our home.

I purchased this while redoing my bathroom. It shows more California or mission style bungalow bathrooms rather than craftsman styles, but I thoroughly enjoyed he book and commentary.

Am updating my bathrooms and wanted to use this as a guide. Lots of pictures and descriptions on how it is done.

Just having completed a renewal of a 100 year old kitchen, for which the book The New Bungalow Kitchen was a wonderful resource, I had high hopes when I ordered a copy of Bungalow Bathrooms. I was disappointed, but I'm not certain it is the fault of the book. The emphasis of Bungalow Bathrooms is on restoration, in other words re-creating the same bathroom that might be found in the original home. This is clearly a different philosophy than I have, which is to update my kitchen and bathroom to take advantage of 21st century technology while still remaining consistent with the artistic vision of Craftsman/Bungalow homes. So if you are looking for solid ideas to modernize your bathroom, as found in The New Bungalow Kitchen, then Bungalow Bathrooms won't help you very much. That being said, Bungalow Bathrooms is a well-done book. It contains many examples of restoration, and points the reader toward resources used in restoration work. Partly due to the excellent photos in the book, I did benefit in terms of a better understanding of tile work in craftsman/bungalow bathrooms.

I'm a huge fan of old house bathrooms and kitchens, and this book is an absolute delight to look at and read. The pictures are spectacular, the book is filled with them. And there is a lot of great historical information as well. I think this book is especially useful if you are renovating an old house bathroom and need some inspiration or help with tile colors/shapes, fixtures, lighting, and decorative details. But it's also just plain fun to look at. :) This is definitely a book I will pull out over and over again.

This book full of historical accuracy - if that's your passion like it is mine, then you will love this book. It is NOT a "Here's the latest HGTV Craftsman trend" book, it is a book that tells you about original features, tiles, floors, tubs, toilets, etc. Some of these photos are museum-quality representations of an authentic bungalow bathroom. It's a fantastic read and is my favorite design and inspiration source for our upcoming bathroom renovation.

This book is unique among its competitors for several reasons: First, it is written by two PhDs who happen to be educators and also two most published researchers in the field of respiratory care. Second, the chapters on basic principles are brief, easy to read, but still authoritative. The technical descriptions of how ventilators work (eg, mode classification) is state-of-the-art and consistent with the most recent respiratory care textbooks. The chapters on ventilator management practical and well-referenced. The chapters on monitoring have great graphics. I was a little disappointed in the two chapters on pulmonary mechanics, as I thought they were over-simplified. This is in view of the fact that the lead author has written an outstanding article on the subject (see Hess DR. Respiratory mechanics in mechanically ventilated patients. Respir Care 2014;59(11):1773-1794). One glaring omission from a book like this is a glossary. But all in all, this is currently the best book on the practical application of mechanical ventilation on the market.

Dean Hess and Bob Kaczmarek for 40 years have been a standard and on the cutting edge in Pulmonary research, publications, journals, and so on and this their 3rd edition on mechanical ventilation is no exception and is strongly recommended for Respiratory Therapists, Pulmonary / Critical Care Nurses, Medical Residents, Intensivists, even Pulmonologists for their total understanding and practical application on this comprehensive and critical subject.

so easy to understand! I use it often to reference

I'm studying to become a critical nurse and because of lack of a good teacher i decided too buy a thoroughly book on this subject. This book has made all the things that i though was obscure to become more clearly.By the time I wrote this review I had not read the entire book. The review is only based on the first part, (1/4 too be more exactly), of the book.

Excellent text for a beginner or seasoned therapist. Well written, concise, a great reference. Written by pioneers in Respiratory Care.

Excellent resource; much more concise than Tobin.

concise, informative and well written. I found this to be an excellent refresher for the ICU

Great book for a refrence and review
