A good book for your collection of Southwest history. Comprehensive history of the railroad and its role in the growth of industry and tourism.

Author has extracted oodles of technical references into an overview that covers a vital sixty-year span of American Southwest history. Victoria Dye skillfully illuminates the intertwining of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad Company (AT&SF) with its more visual counterpart and partner, the Fred Harvey Company. In a mere six chapters, along with a smattering of descriptive BW photos, the author summarizes the wild ethnic mixture of the early Southwestern frontier with a strong emphasis on the economic impact of the myriad cultures. She describes how Harvey and AT&SF precipitated the view of pioneer New Mexico and Arizona as `Indian' more than `Mexican or Spanish,' even though the domineering government and religion was of the latter for hundreds of years. Dye further characterizes how the Harvey/AT&SF promotions helped travelers [remarkably] overcome the spectre of Indian hostilities, replacing fear with their inventive illusion of `Santa Fe' gentility. Marketing, promotion and economics are the core of the book. The author is to be highly commended for distilling five centuries of Cultural Revolution in to 100 pages of easy reading. The bibliography yields [literally] hundreds of literary resources (perhaps this book's most valuable contribution) for further reader interest. The author's supplemental material helps substantiate a "who's who" timeline of AT&SF, Fred Harvey, Santa Fe, curio and Southwestern Indian history - don't miss these appendix, page notes, and bibliographic features!

A great text on the theory of expert systems. Used as a text in a graduate level course and it was very helpful and effective.

Received in good condition. It had a different cover design then the pictured ones but, the same content (4th edition), I hope.

Bought this because of my use of the CLIPS engine for a project I'm working on. It's a great second-step after reading the CLIPS docs.

An excellent text for a first course in Expert systems.

The condition is very good and price is reasonable, however, the shipping period is a bit longer than my expectation.

Just want to learn CLIPS: skip the intro. Just want a first introduction to expert systems: try a different book. Personally I liked: Introduction to Expert Systems (3rd Edition). You know expert systems and want more reading food: Go for this one. It contains endless material and references."Expert Systems" is a great tutorial of the C based open source expert system shell CLIPS. It even contains patterns of usage. This part alone is worth the read of this rather expensive book. Also some nice examples of expert systems are programmed in a very instructive way. I liked the implementation of a system with certainty factors (MYCIN style) and the developer implementation of backward chaining in CLIPS (an only forward chaining shell).The first half of the book is a very thorough overview of expert systems. For each introduced concept the book names nearly all known terms to describe this very concept. For an introduction it is extremely important to name only the most common term and then after some time maybe one or the other more.Reasoning and reasoning with uncertainty is well covered. Each chapter has ample references. Here again a little more orientation would have been very helpful.The book itself is nicely bound and printed. It is a pleasure to look at and a little heavy to hold for a long time.I fully recommend the CLIPS part and I do recommend the general expert systems part as a second or better third book on this topic.

Gary Riley was, for a long time, a NASA employee whose sole assignment seemed to be to work out the C implementation of the OPS language from LISP to C so that the military could use it. LISP, even the Symbolics LISP machine, was far too slow for practical applications. Dr. Girratano worked with Gary to produce a book that could be used as a text book in classes taught at the University of Houston and could be attended by the NASA personnel. All hand-in-glove situation that worked out quite well.But, The Book! I have used it to teach many of my classes on AI. The first five or six chapters can be applied to ANY rulebased system. The first two chapters can be read by any person who wants to understand more about AI. True enough, most of the vendors today have directed their efforts to Java, but the speed of CLIPS is now (since about 20008) one of the fastest in the world. The power of CLIPS is unparalleled in terms of subroutines and extensions that have been implemented over the past 20 years by NASA and others.The CLIPS language is free. The book is extremely inexpensive for a course in AI. My advice is to read it, devour it, consume it and understand it. Unfortunately, after that you won't be able to talk with your companions about AI since they will know very little except If-THEN-ELSE is part of a rulebased system. If you can find a university that teaches this book, TAKE THE COURSE!! If not, read it on your on your own and join a local rulebase group to help you grow. Above all, have fun.SDGjco

This short is a prequel to The Darcy’s of Pemberley Book 1 of three books by Shannon Winslow.I almost didn't review this because it was so short. Also, I didn't feel that I could give the same number of stars that I would give a full book. I liked it and 3-stars says I liked it.I suppose the title sort of gives it away. We are at Hunsford Parsonage and Mr. Collins is enjoying his dinner [one that he finagled out of Lady Catherine], when he suddenly remembers his appointment with his patroness. So, after stuffing one more mouth full, he jumps up and… the rest they say, is history. It was a very short window of time. The story also carried over into the next book in Winslow’s series. This prequel story went into more depth and explained what happened in order to answer the questions posed in the following book.“Born merely for the purpose of digestion” Jean de la Bruyere

Perhaps this is not spectacular literature, but it is full and satisfying for Austen fans who yearn to see beyond the written territory to the logical extension of the characters' roles. This short story hooked me on Winslow's vision. The story plays out the lines started in Pride and Prejudice. I have been in the habit of replaying the 1995 A&E Pride and Prejudice DVDs on Saturday evenings and the sequels continue the characters' lives very handily. I found out what happened to Collins and Charlotte. I just had to see what else was in store. Winslow is very respectful of the Austen legacy and I am grateful for this. The Kindle price cannot be beaten either.

The only reason this is 4 stars instead of 5 is that it is so short. But the language and the portrayal of the characters is perfect. I had the picture of David Bamber (the Mr. Collins actor in the 1995 movie version) as he is stuffing his breakfast into his mouth while Lizzy prepares to take her morning walk. JUST AN EXCELLENT interpretation of how he reaches his demise. And also very well written as to how he obtained that leg of mutton to begin with - justice is served.The only sad part is how Mrs. Collins' view of marriage is now forever tainted by her "settling" for a safe marriage rather than one of love!This was a very short read but well worth it.

Mr. Collins is that annoying guy at work who pops up next to you when you least expect him. He lies in wait for you outside of the restroom, conference room or copy room. Sarcasm aside, nothing you say can offends him. Perhaps because he never hears you as he is thinking ahead to next thing he needs to say. After meeting his wife at the company picnic or holiday party, you realize she is happy to escape him and schmooze with the other guests. The only events that will remove him from your side are the offer of free food or the arrival of upper management. He never wastes an opportunity to try to curry favor there.

Mr. Collins is the least liked person in the Pride and Prejudice story. "Not the cleverest of men," as Jane said to Elizabeth, "but he is respectable." This is a quote from Pride and Prejudice. Mr. Collins was a thorn in everyone's flesh while being a man of the cloth. It is sad that he met such a demise, but we can blame it on Lady De Bourge who gave them the leg of lamb. I don't recommend it, but it was a bit interesting if you are really interested how Charlotte must have sighed relief for $.99 on my kindle.

If you cringed at the behavior and attitude of Mr. Collins in Pride and Prejudice, you will enjoy this short story. If you wondered at all how Charlotte would endure being wife to such a man, pick up this story.I enjoyed reading this short story very much. I found the dialog and lingo well done and very similar to the classic. There were a few spots where the text seemed too close to the original, but I'm OK with that.This quick read will give you a good look at the author's writing style. Shannon Winslow has written other Jane Austen style books. I enjoyed this short and will read more from this author in the future.

Sometimes we have to make decisions in our life that we may not be excited about, butif you follow what you believe to be right, you can receive a blessing. I think that is what happenedto our friend Charlotte! She felt she didn't have many choices of a husband, so chose who shethought would be tolerable, and she could make happy, and be content herself. I really like these. I'm a reading specialist and am using these for SAT prep tutoring, and this is a great way to start. Teaching students how to break apart words they don't know is WAY more useful than trying to bombard them with vocabulary lists. It's the tools for a lifetime of better comprehension as opposed to a set list with no explanation of why the words make sense.Highly recommend!

My son just started using these cards to study Greek and Latin Root words.He(a 9th grader) took PSAT test before we got these and got his score yesterday.He missed 5 vocab questions, which is big deal in this test.After he reviewed what he had missed, he said, "mom, now that I know more Greek and Latin root wordsI could've gotten most of these answers right"There are books and flashcards, but a few reviewers said that flashcards were more helpful to study.I absolutely agree with them.I and my husband are ESL learner so sometimes we can pick a few cards each to study and rotate the cards between 3 of us.Sometimes my 5th grader learns a word or two and thinks it's not too bad. Much less intimidating than dealing with pageful of all big words.We love them and would recommend to our friends.

These are only flash cards: but I highly recommend these as an added benefit for any English program: especially for science terms and medical terminology that students will encounter later in life.

These are index card type flash cards, easy to read. One side has the word root and the other has the definition and several words made from the root with their definitions. If you are trying to decide between the book and the flash cards I would say go with the flash cards unless you want your child to make their own cards which is the point of the book. The book does give a little history behind each root but that is the only extra info within the book itself. The only con with the cards is durability. They are the same as an index card and over time will wear and tear.

The origins of our language are fascinating, and these cards are great, easy reference for sitting down and flipping through when one has a few minutes or an hour. Can even make a guessing game with these to quiz each other.We covered ours with contact paper to extend their lifespan!

We are using these for an elementary school child who is home schooled. We first used "Rummy Roots," which we liked. These cards have some of the same words, but also many others. They're a nice set of cards with many helpful roots addressed. There are many different way you can use the cards to learn the roots and some of the words they form.

This is a great program to use with Jr. High and High School students.

These are very detailed. I bought them for my 8 year old to have something to do in long car rides. He enjoys the trivia aspect but he can’t pronounce any of the words. He’s probably just a little too young.
