I did not buy this book on Amazon. I borrowed it from my local library, and I'm glad I did so before buying it. Less than a third of the book addresses painting with acrylic paints. The rest of the book touches here and there on other aspects of creating visual art - drawing, composition, methods for getting a drawing on canvas before painting, and other useful information that has nothing to do with painting with any medium, much less acrylics specifically. I was looking for information on acrylics and how to use them along with tips, tricks, techniques, etc., but I was sorely disappointed.A better title would have been An Overview of Visual Art for Dummies, for that is what it is.

I expected more lessons with how to directions on making some of the paintings in the book. The author gas a lot of examples of things he's talking about, but nothing to teach how to do it.For instance, the first painting he walks through uses items that beginners wouldn't necessarily have. I don't have a rake brush and am not ready to paint with anything other than a few regular brushes of different sizes and shapes. This book is meant for beginners, but was a complete waste of money for me.I used the Learn to paint in 59 small paintings, which is bringing me through different types,of brush control and painting from easy to harder. That was well worth the money. Don't waste your time on this one.

I probably have at least a dozen books on how to paint with acrylics but this one is more helpful and informative than all of the others put together. The instructions are simple to understand and easy to do but the effects are truly creative and varied. The organization is excellent, making it very easy to use. Everything is shown step by step, unlike so many books where you are given a couple of instructions followed by a completed picture...the kind that leave you clueless about the steps it took to get there. The techniques are broken down so that they are very easy to understand but that doesn't mean the effects look simple when finished. There's a multitude of techniques to try as well as demonstrations of brush techniques, kinds of paint mediums and various additives. There are art supplies I never even knew existed that can make very interesting effects. This book differs from others in the "Dummies" series in that there are many colored pictures and illustrations. This book is a pleasure to use.

Highly recommend purchasing this book, especially if you have unanswered questions about acrylics and I have dozens of books regarding acrylic painting.Prior to receiving it I'd searched numerous times seeking answers to different acrylic questions. So far, this book has answered them all and every time I refer to it I learn more than I was looking for. It's a bit different from most of the dummies publications as it has excellent full color illustrations and intelligent content. 5+++ stars on this one!

Most of my painting experience is with watercolors. I've tried oils but, with a short attention span and even less patience, I found the long drying time of oils frustrating unless I was working wet-on-wet all the time (as in "Think Bob Ross"). Plus, cold weather's driven me inside where oil paint fumes drive the cats crazy. I won't mention what my wife thinks about the fumes. I bought this book more for the technical hints on the properties of acrylic paints than for the painting techniques (which as best as I can tell are comparable to the Dummies books on WC and Oils re: techniques which, in turn, compare favorably to most basic "How to Paint with . . ." books). This book met my expectations on the technical side and exceeded my expectations on the techniques side. In addition to helping me decide how to use the technical properties of acrylics to their best advantage, it also helped me figure out how to integrate my oil use and WC use in what the literature calls "mixed media." In short, there were some technical hints as well as technique hints that I could also use in my WC and oil works.

Before you being any project in this book, read completely through the instructions carefully. I tried to do the wolf trading card on p66. The instructions take you about halfway through and then there's a picture of the finished product, with no clue how to finish it. The book does have lots of hints and tricks, but not many step-by-step projects--and those I am hesitant to take on. I am sure there are better books for beginners out there.

I am well-pleased with this book on Acrylic painting. Having just started Acrylic painting, myself, I wanted a reference book that I could use every day to answer simple questions. Like all of the "Dummie" books on other subjects, it is written in simple language, and leads you through the process step by step. Chock full of color illustrations and examples. I'm sure I will be using this book a lot in the years to come.Very high quality and well worth the price.

Like the other "For Dummies" books. A lot of information, but not really a manual for teaching you how to paint if you are truly an absolute beginner.

I've only perused it a few times but there is a LOT of information in this book. I'm really glad I ordered it and I'm sure I will learn much. I've already found out lots about different textures I can add to my paint/paintings. It should be very interesting putting it into use. Glad I got it!

Gluten Free is such a common phrase but do people really understand what it means especially when it comes to a diet? The Gluten Free Diet for Beginners gives a comprehensive background on what it means to be gluten free and the foods you can prepare. The book begins with the gluten protein properties and its effects on health specifically to people suffering from celiac disease or other gluten related conditions. The book also goes into great detail discussing foods containing gluten.More than 30 delicious gluten-free recipes for all occasions are included. Spicy bacon-wrapped scallops and avocado chocolate mousse are some of my favorites in this book. If you've ever wanted to learn what it really means to be gluten free, then look no more.

I liked this book, it will be useful as a family member of mine can only eat Gluten-free diet. It was packed with recipes, so there are a lot in here to try. My only concern was that I missed some images that would have made the recipes even more interesting. Anyway, a well made book!

For a beginner there weren't to many recipes I liked in this book. I thought it was going to help with more easier recipes or talk about what I should and shouldn't eat.

The information was easy to read and to understand. But print was large and the info part I read in 10 minutes. Rest of it is recipes which may be good. But I wanted more infor. More lists of foods I could and could not eat. More detail. So I thought the price was a bit high for the content.

Overjoyed that I can cook again. Thought I couldn't before finding ur book

great book for those who need gluten free help

loved it I have lost 60 pounds

I'd never heard of author Nina Revoyr til I read a review of her newest novel, "A Student of History" the other day. The book - perhaps a Gatsby-lite tale - sounded interesting so I downloaded it. A short 240 pages, the novel takes us up Bellagio Drive in Bel Air to the rarefied world of the WASP super upper class. This group is the descendants of the original settlers - the Dohenys, the Mulhollands, the Chandlers, etc - who had made their money in oil and land investments like orange groves an d property development. This group tends not include "new money", like the members of the entertainment industry. You won't find many, if any, Jewish or Hispanic names among these members of the Los Angeles Country Club or the attendees at fancy museum galas. One of the most important members of this upper-upper class is "Marian W", whose grandfather made a vast fortune and passed it along to his son, Marian's father. Marian W lives at the top of Bel Air, in a compound of houses. At 75, she still participates in social activities.Invited into this milieu is Rick Nagano, a late 20's graduate student at USC. He's taken all the courses for his PHD (in history) and is working on his doctoral thesis. He's recently broken up with his girlfriend and is literally drifting though life. Rick is hired on by Marian W to help with her memoirs. He's from a working class family and has risen above his family in education level. Rick becomes a protegee of sorts to Marian W and is introduced into society, while being placed at a back table at the luncheons. She gets him kitted up in the right clothes and other encoutrements to make him more presentable. Rick also meets - and falls hard for - Fiona Morgan, a married woman a few years older than him.Nina Revoyr's book is a look at how a well-meaning young man gets involved with a social group well above his own and how his own values suffer. No one, including Rick Nagano, is a saint but the deviousness and venality displayed by members of Marian and Fiona's group is astounding. Rick's story is told in rather flat prose, which is the way it should be. With a little imagination you may be able to turn the story and characters into a police report.Revoyr's a powerhouse story-teller. I want to read her three or four previous novels.

Thinking back after I finished the book, I realized how much Revoyr’s ultra wealthy characters shield themselves by walls. Richard’s patron, Mrs. W__, lives high up on a Los Angeles estate so large and secluded that nobody outside her circle would even that know it—and she—were there. When Richard is introduced into that circle of old money elites, he soon learns that all over the city there are private spaces hidden from view of the hoi polloi, so that members of the circle don’t have to interact with regular people. There are even walls within walls. When Richard attends an outdoor charity function and becomes overwhelmed by the spectacle of excess and waste, he slips through an ornamental hedge. Only on the other side of that hedge is he able to have a conversation with a normal person. And, not surprisingly, there are figurative walls; the barriers of privilege and influence that ensure the members of the circle will not have to suffer the legal and other negative consequences of their actions.Richard, once allowed behind these barriers learns that they are also a form of quarantine, because there is a sickness of the soul that has infected the members of the circle. In this short, searing novel, we see what happens to Richard when he is exposed to that sickness. This is not a pleasant story, but it’s keenly observed and memorable. This would make an excellent book club read for both its literary merits and its thought-provoking depiction of our modern era of financial and social inequality.

I started out really liking this book. It's a fun if not too difficult to solve little mystery that peels back the curtain on L.A.'s uber-wealthy and makes some valid points about class and race in the process. The book is largely well-written.So don't get me wrong with what I'm about to write. I enjoyed the book. It was good. But it could have been great if not for the clichés.First off, the uber-wealthy women who populate the book are all of a type – unnaturally thin, over-modified and not very nice. They certainly don’t reflect the diversity of women who actually attend charity functions in Los Angeles.Worse, the book is written from the POV of a male character who repeatedly makes comments about how "natural women" (i.e., with no plastic surgery) are so much more attractive. Take, for instance, these two sentences, both on page 145:" ...a forty-ish too-thin society blonde and a normal-seeming woman of thirty or so...""Sarah was lovier in her natural, unaltered states than most of these fancier ladies."Secondly, the author’s resentment of privilege is palpable. It’s reverse snobbery that wasn’t necessary for the author to make her points.Example: the protagonist, a graduate history student, drives a beat-up old Honda. A valet bringing up the car after a posh function asks a rich woman if it’s her car and the woman gets angry and says "Certainly not." The chef catering a charity lunch tells the protagonist that the guests are horrible people. As if everyone donating lots of money to charity would be awful, or someone working the event would be so unprofessional and stupid as to badmouth the people who hire him.I don’t really want to rag too much on a well-written book about an interesting subject. L.A. comes alive in the pages. So recommended with reservations, as noted.Oh, and side note to the author: Edward VIII was NOT so fat he needed a love chair. That was Edward VII. I’m guessing this was a typo. Flagging it so you can correct it if there are subsequent printings.

Netter's Atlas of the Human Body

From Booklist

Intended for the nonprofessional, this reference source presents illustrations of the various regions of the human body. It begins by covering "Surface Anatomy" as well as "Skin and Nails." The succeeding sections treat body systems, including skeletal, muscular, digestive, respiratory, nervous, reproductive, and more. All of the illustrations are by Dr. Frank H. Netter, whose illustrations also appear in the 13-volume Netter Collection of Medical Illustrations. Another text featuring Netter's work is the Netter Atlas of Human Anatomy (Elsevier, 2003), intended for the medical professional, which was first published in 1989 and is now in its third edition. The large and detailed illustrations that appear on every page are anatomically correct, full color, and clearly labeled. In addition, each two-page spread includes supplementary text provided by Harvard Health Publications. The text explains concepts clearly and would be appropriate for a high-school student or a general reader. Within the text, highlighted topics appear in orange. The book concludes with a short list of references and a brief biography of Netter. It also includes a comprehensive, nine-page index. This would be a welcome addition to public and high-school libraries. Though simple enough for the lay reader, it would also be a useful resource for students in the health sciences. Bought this book for my son who is taking some college courses. He had asked for a different author for an atlas (Martini's), and while I was researching for that one I came across reviews for this one. I decided to purchase both. I am very pleased with the Netter's book - it is big, hardback, and full of huge color pictures.

Like the anatomy cliffs notes. Beautiful and graphic. These are pictures, not diagrams. Great for the serious homeschool. For your future surgeons or butchers. I'm hoping or mostly surgeons.

Wonderful details and drawings. My 5 yr old future doctor loves it. Not too much information but just enough to get a basic understanding of body systems.

Lots of great pictures that are neatly labeled and colored for easy studying. Definitely helped me get through anatomy. The flashcards are nice too.

Nettler's Atlas of the Human Body made an excellent reference for any question that might be raised concerning the human anatomy.

This is the best book I have seen that a lay person can use to understand their physiology. The artwork is outstanding.

just the book I wanted.

This book is useful for high school or very basic anatomy classes, not for any sort of upper level courses.
