" - Charging You Up"Unlike plenty of other bucket list guides on the market today, The Big Bucket List Book focuses on creating experiences rather than visiting sites or landmarks to cross off as "completed". Holy mackerel, what a load of banal garbage ! Perfect if you're a starry eyed, "touchy feely" idealist. Some examples of things to do: "Become a citizen activist", "Become a songwriter lyricist","Find your own food" and the silliness goes on and on. Don't waste your time, money or intellectual capital with this tripe.More travel adventure, less transcendental soul searching would have helped. I don't read a book to be preached to.

This book is full of creative ideas for adding fun, adventurous, fulfilling activities to your life. I especially like that it is so well organized, with specific activities listed under general categories, making it easy to find something that fits your personality! It is a fun book to leaf through and gather ideas, and also to see that if others can do it, you can too! Although my own bucket list activity is included in this book (traveling the world), I loved reading up on some of the many ideas here, some of which never even occurred to me.

A really fun book of creative and unusual Things To Do. Gave me ideas on new adventures to experience, ways to recharge and inspiration to Just Do It

Meh.

Gifted this to my friend for Christmas, he loved it. Found the book very interesting.

Fun gift for my Dad! He is really enjoying it!

I expected another think. But Is ok.

Great book. I have a number of ideas that should make my retirement more interesting.

Review

This gorgeous coffee table book illustrates the ways quilters today are breaking traditions through color photographs of more than 230 quilts designed by members of the Modern Quilt Guild, and provides a brief history of the modern quilting movement. (Publishers Weekly, 10/2/2017)If there's one coffee table book every modern quilter should own, this is it. Compiled by the Modern Quilt Guild, this book gives a brief history of modern quilting, culminating in the creation of the MQG. There are examples of early modern quilts, which are so inspirational today, and they explain how a movement became mainstream. This book is primarily a glossy picture book, featuring over 200 of quilts made by members of the MQG, including a number of Make Modern contributors. It is divided into sections based on different aesthetics of modern quilting―Modern Traditionalism, Solids/Graphic, Colour Palettes, Minimalism, Expansive Negative Space, Alternate Gridwork. While not every quilt showcased will be your cup of tea (or shot of whiskey), there is plenty of inspiration and it's a great example of the modern aesthetic. (Make Modern, 20)

The Fabulous Sylvester: The Legend, the Music, the Seventies in San Francisco, by Joshua Gamson

From Publishers Weekly

In the world of that most disparaged of musical genres—disco—the subject of this biography commanded respect. By conventional standards, Sylvester James was an outsider—he was an out, gay, African-American who dressed in drag and sang with a thundering falsetto—but he found mainstream success in the late 1970s and early '80s with three Top 40 hits, Dance (Disco Heat), You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) and I Who Have Nothing, and an international #1 sensation (Do Ya Wanna Funk). At times, Gamson's (Freaks Talk Back) extensively researched volume is a vibrant and moving oral biography, with firsthand conversations with virtually everyone who knew or worked with Sylvester, from his youth in South Central L.A. through his successful music career, to his death from AIDS in 1988 at 41. The richness of this material (Sylvester's background singers Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes Armstead, who later became the Weather Girls, are particularly amusing and insightful raconteurs) reveals all the shadings of Sylvester's diva persona: he was fierce but generous, caustic but caring, temperamental but talented. Gamson's pulsating use of song lyrics, sounds and descriptions also creates a tangible history of San Francisco as it changed from a joyous oasis of liberation to the epicenter of the AIDS pandemic. Seventeen years after his death, this gay icon gets the celebratory biography he deserves. Photos. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist

Hot on the heels of Pam Tent's book on the Cockettes, Midnight at the Palace [BKL N 15 04], Gamson limns another gender-bending San Francisco entertainment phenomenon, whose career arced high without quite denting general national consciousness. Sylvester James Jr. came from nearly all-black South Central L.A. As a teen, he started cross-dressing and sneaking out to glitzy parties. Possessed of a remarkable singing voice, he advanced from the antics of his cross-dressing street-gang-cum-sorority the Disquotays to become immortalized onscreen when a scene in the Bette Midler vehicle The Rose called for a drag Diana Ross. "The producers thought it would be hilarious to have a Diana who tipped the scales at around two-fifty, so Sylvester was hired." The seventies were a cornucopia of glitz and success for Sylvester. When he died of AIDS in 1988, even his funeral was a show full of singing, sermonizing, and an audiotape of the deceased cutting loose--in falsetto, of course--on Christmas carols. "Most people in the church were overcome"; Sylvester would've wanted them to be. Mike TribbyCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

I love The Fabulous Sylvester! The book arrived ahead of schedule and in perfect condition. This is a book for anyone interested in the glittering disco era and the book encompasses all of the feeling of that era.It is a bittersweet look at a magnificent singer who infused disco with gospel and hot buttered soul. It is sad that he died so young.I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to relive the exciting disco era and who just loves good music.

Sylvester was a beloved figure inside his circle of admirers; he received cautious regard at best from outside that circle. Now, along comes a long overdue biography, and what a volume. The timing couldn't be more right, as the US has finally put to rest most of the putrid disco backlash. In the stores are not only decent compilations of the disco music but also books like this one that reflect the reality of the subculture. Not the bandwagon that pop radio jumped on, not the Arthur-Murray style competitions, not the faux-glamour suburban nightclubs, but the real deal. Sylvester was both artist and participant in the disco culture-- singer, performance artist, club dancer. The author of this book captures Sylvester in all his complexity and drives home the important part he played in the subculture that was disco.Gamson is an academic, which means that he has been thorough in locating good sources of information. He seemed to have access to so many of the important persons and institutions that played a part in Sylvester's life. He is able to provide a well-rounded depiction of the man's personality, warts and all. He does a good job laying out the formative experiences in this colorful life, be it a mother who role-modeled an imperious love of fashion but later derided a child who followed her example, or a church community that would exploit Sylvester's temperament but denounce him for acts its other members could get away with if they kept hypocritically silent. Sylvester's complicated relationship to the gay community of 70s San Francisco is fascinating. The author does a great job bringing all the early elements around in the end of the book, showing how lasting the formative events are and how much a person can fill in the voids during adulthood.Gamson is more than an academic, however. He is also an entertaining writer and he takes in this book a great tone that fits his subject. He doesn't shy away from any aspects of the life he is depicting. The sex, the slang, the drugs, the erratic behavior, the fun, the bonds, and the subculture's differing values all sparkle like one of Sylvester's jackets. There is no stuffy ivory-tower writing here. Gamson can be as breezy in tone as Sylvester, but he doesn't pander. In fact, among the disco-oriented books that have come out over the last six years, this volume is as well-produced as that other benchmark of writing, *Last Night A DJ Saved My Life*.The 60s teen drag scene, the 1970-era Cockettes, the rock-and-blues recording phase, the disco about which Sylvester had conflicted feelings; then the Hi NRG and activism phases-- all of these are given sharp observation and each makes for vibrant reading material. Gamson covers nearly all the bases, including the way the drag-loving Sylvester was an open mark for a defrauding imposter. It was great to learn how the disco albums came about, and what the exact roles of the band, producers, and record-label suits were. The only omission I found was Sylvester's collaboration with jazzist Herbie Hancock in the 1981 album Magic Windows. Otherwise, Gamson covered all the personal, community, and musical bases. This was great reading for someone like me, familiar with both Sylvester and the 70s; I think the book would appeal to anyone with an open mind who is interested in a character who will swim against the current if he is so created.

At last, a beautifully-written book about a beautiful artist - Sylvester. I have been waiting for this book to arrive for years and, finally, here it is!I was hooked by the opening chapter which tells the story of a young boy named Tiki Lofton who sneaks out of his bedroom window at night and over to a friend's apartment where, in 1960's South Central, with the help of a young Sylvester, he transforms himself into a "Disquotay." The Disquotays were a group of boys who liked to dress up as sophisticated ladies. And Sylvester, or Dooni as he was known then, was in charge of the wigs."The first Disquotay bash that Tiki went to was over on 120th and Athens, at Etta James's house, sometime around 1965. Etta, who would later be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (largely on the strength of her 1961 hit "At Last") and the Betty Ford Center (largely on the strength of her smack addiction), was already a recording star and a friend to many local Los Angeles drag queens . . . The house, with its swimming pool and fireplace, had stunned her. Women, drag queens, and guys, all sending joyful noises in Tiki's direction; the music had been jumping; Walter Jackson's version of "Lee Cross," Jr. Walker & the All Stars' "Shotgun," "Nowhere to Run" by Martha and the Vandellas, Fontella Bass singing "Rescue Me." Gay kids all perched on gigantic speakers, singing and carrying on . . . Tiki had said to herself. "This -- honey, where is this world?" Within months, she would be a full-fledged Disquotay, made-up, bewigged, bejeweled."Joshua Gamsom recreates this world vividly in that first chapter. Simultaneously, he introduces us to the members of Sylvester's family. His beautiful and beloved mother and grandmother. His twin sisters, Dette and Dean. The quotes are full of heart and expertly placed and the story unfolds like a fine silk fan. I can't help but think that Sylvester would be very pleased to read this biography.I had the honor of meeting with Sylvester to discuss a project a few years before his death. It was mid-afternoon and he was sewing sequins on something, which was his favorite pasttime. He was always sewing, a talent he picked up from the women who raised him. He walked over to the turntable and put on Patti LaBelle's "If Only You Knew" and said he was dedicating the song at his One-Night-Only concert the following night to his fans and supporters in San Francisco, the city in which he always felt most at home. That night, with Martha Wash at his side, they performed that song together, bouncing their voices off each other inside the Castro Theater. Those two powerful voices, the acoustics of the Castro Theater, and the magical spell he wove with Patti LaBelle's song was something to behold. That Sylvester could hold his own with the amazing Martha Wash is a testament to the power of his falsetto. He didn't have a thin, reedy falsetto. His was full-bodied, gravelly even, and very much in evidence on one of his biggest hits, "Do You Wanna Funk.""So when I tell you, that you're really something, baby, will you stay, or will you go away."Joshua Gamson captures the essence of Sylvester's personality, the diva fits as well as the immense kindness and sensitivity, and wraps it all together into an highly readable book that I wholeheartedly suggest you pick up. Although some have faulted him for not having an encyclopedic knowledge of music, Gamson lets experts like Joel Selvin provide insightful commentary. It is my hope that someone has optioned the book for a movie and we can expect to see this wild individual portrayed in all his glory.John Waters wraps up "The Fabulous Sylvester" pretty well in his cover blurb: "A well-written, touching, dignified biography of a gay black diva who never really fit into any minority but managed to achieve his dreams of stardom. Now that's what I call a man."Five Stars. Great Read.

The embedded software industry is in the midst of a major revolution. Tremendous amount of new development lays ahead. This new software needs an actual architecture that is inherently safer, more extensible, and easier to understand than the usual shared-state concurrency and blocking based on a traditional Real-Time Operating System (RTOS).This book provides and explains such a modern, event-driven architecture based on active objects (actors), hierarchical state machines, software tracing, graphical modeling and automatic code generation. While others only talk about these modern techniques, this book actually comes with practical, efficient, working software that has been battle-tested and proven in real-life systems.Welcome to the 21st century!

If you are an accomplished or aspiring embedded systems programmer and resort to the "superloop" as your foremost implementation method, you absolutely MUST read this book. While not new concepts to the industry, the concepts presented in Miro's book are certainly not commonplace in many of the embedded systems code I've seen over many years in the industry. While UML makes for a clean, now defacto standard for presenting concepts, the real beauty in Miro's book is the use of a readily-available frameworks for immediately adopting the many lessons-learned and provided in the book. These complete, well written and excellently coded frameworks are available under the GPL and an alternate, low-cost license for those who wish to keep their code private. For strong C programmers, the implementation of the frameworks is a delight as one reads through the code and is treated to an incredibly simple, lightweight and extremely powerful system that will forever put an end to your future plans to "superloop" again--albeit for any system where C (or C++) is adequately supported by the hardware. For anyone admitting that "we've always done superloop and it has always worked in the past," get ready for a real-time, highly responsive system that actually IS event driven and thrives in as little as a few bytes of RAM and perhaps a K of ROM.For those who must hold on to the "superloop is king" mindset, consider the consequences of adding to your superloop an entirely new set of features and how that may affect the timing through your loop. I started with the "dining philosophers" example code discussed in the book and ported it to my own board (using a Renesas H8S-2166 microcontroller) and augmented the code to be responsive to external events (mechanical switches). This required software debouncing. While my "example" was somewhat "trivial" in terms of what the functionality actually did, it is, in my opinion, extremely typical of changing requirements of both new and legacy code in the day-to-day evolution of embedded systems programming. My changes to the example code were to implement a "bike light" feature set. That is, whenever a switched was pressed, the bike light--if off--would illuminate. An LED on the board was used for this purpose. Pressed again, the light would blink. Pressed and held for 1 second while on or blinking, the light would turn off.The typical implementation in superloop would often require a considerate approach to ensure that the new functionality was "injected" into the "right" part of the loop, so as to be of minimal impact to other areas of critical timing code. If any kind of action within the new code delayed the loop processing, then the whole of the superloop could come under further scrutiny and therefore cause more pain as one trials and tests system responsiveness on a number of potential new fronts.Atop of this new functionality, the frameworks-provided QSpy code instrumentation system, which allows one to have a stream of information about the system states and transitions, was ported to use a UART on the H8S. Imagine adding all of this new functionality in a traditional superloop body of code. Now, imagine adding it in a matter of perhaps two hours using the frameworks AND not adversely impacting the "legacy" application code at all!One of the most beautiful aspects of these frameworks is the ability to focus strictly on the code necessary for the task at hand instead of the entire system as a whole. The frameworks substantially frees the programmer from having to manually manage system responsiveness typical of the superloop.Using UML to design and document an embedded system is relatively new to many embedded systems programmers. Miro also provides a free download stencil set for MS Visio for easily implementing statecharts, which should help those interested in pursuing the many benefits of the technology included in this book.I first met Miro at a developer's conference in San Diego, CA. One thing that comes out in his book and his discussions of this exciting technology is his passion for it. I was very interested in it, as he was displaying his software running on a very resource constrained microcontroller--all in about 40 bytes of RAM or a bit less.Drawn to his topic by his enthusiasm, I admired the frameworks even more as I began looking at the implementation and design of the code. The entire C bundle, with royalty-free 'private commerical use' license, one of either cooperative or preemptive schedulers (both are provided), event processor, code instrumentation support and more is all for under $2K. Of course, one may explore the entire frameworks for the cost of only a free download before ever making a licensing decision for a given product.Combined with the low-cost solution of using such powerful frameworks in conjunction with learning the valuable content of this book, teams everywhere can exploit the years of experience and very robust, capable code in a matter of hours instead of weeks, months and even years of doing things the "old school" way using superloops and other facilities instead of truly event-driven designs. This book and the free QF download are your entry into the 21st century of embedded systems programming. Because the code is provided in C, porting is rather easy and running on embedded systems and desktop systems is practical and easy. I was able to build and run the code as provided without modifications on my Linux, Mac and Windows systems and on the H8S and a Microchip PIC 24 with only a minimalist porting effort of about a half a day in each case. Imagine being able to run an entire real-time system that features excellent extensibility while freeing you from the rigors of managing superloop timing on your own hardware all within a few hours. Then, spend a couple of hours extending the system without impacting the rest of it? Lather, rinse, repeat...it is truly that simple and robust.Best of all, this book will open your eyes to modern methods and concepts for programming event-driven embedded systems. That is, systems that respond to internal and external events that naturally occur in all embedded systems designs. It is my firm belief that after reading this book and exploring the code on your own, you'll discover why I so heartily endorse it and now share the passion Miro has for this wonderful, very lightweight but robust, complete solution for modern embedded systems programming.

It is rare to find an author who is so strong theoretically, while paying such close attention to implementation details like microcontroller resource conservation. The Nano product, for example, shows he has his eye on the low end 8 bit embedded world, not just the Gigahertz microcontrollers used in smart phones and the like.I've tried all the ways to make state machines in C and assembler, and I have to say the function pointer method is by far the best. He spent lots of time on the underpinnings of both flat and hierarchical state machines, and went through the process of implementing simple state machines using the various methods that have been tried before. At the end, not only do you feel comfortable with complex state machines, but you can really understand WHY the way taught in the book is the best way. One it "clicks", you will never go back again. I'm completely sold.If that weren't enough, he adds a real-time framework to the state machine skeleton which includes a task scheduler, an event queue, and a built-in method to encapsulate the various state machines into active objects. This way, you can run concurrent orthogonal and nested state machines without getting lost in the details. It's all so well organized, I feel like I've been a hack programmer up until now.I do have a quibble though. It's not the product - it's the book. It's already getting a bit out of date. The book doesn't cover QM - the modeling tool - at all. It also doesn't cover QT integration, which is a great method of building your virtual prototype on your desktop before committing it to your target. If you want an end-to-end development environment, QM and QT are golden. QT is an outstanding C/C++ development environment in its own right, and the GUI features seal the deal. Finally, I hope the next version (which I will almost certainly buy) comes out on Kindle - to save some trees.

I am impressed, the book handles a difficult topic very well. BTW, this is my first 5-star rating, ever. One gets both a high-level picture, as well as detailed examples. What I especially appreciate is that the author anticipates my questions and covers them well. I am actually an application (.NET/GUI), not embedded, developer; yet this is by far the best source on state-machines and event-driven programming I have found. I did notice few typos, but they did not cause much confusion.

This is an excellent book describing the statecharts approach to state machine programming. My only complaint is that I wish more practical examples were discussed, top-to-bottom including their implementation on a number of target platforms, and slightly less attention paid to the theory. Other than that wish, this is still an excellent way to start coding state machines using UML statecharts.

“Rich and ambitious. . . . More than an economic history, or a chronicle of architectural feats and labor movements, Behemoth depicts a world in retreat that still looms large in the national imagination.” - Jennifer Szalai, New York Times“Fascinating. . . Freeman shows how factories have had an overwhelming influence on the way we work, think, move, play and fight.” - Scott W. Berg, Washington Post“A lively chronicle of the factory [that] delves into the nitty-gritty of manufacturing [and] successfully melds together those nuggets with social history on the shop floor and beyond the factory walls.” - Economist“You may have no detailed knowledge of factories except that they can be converted into cool lofts. In that case, you’ll learn much from historian Joshua Freeman.” - Jonathan Rose, Wall Street Journal“A global tour of three centuries, from English textile mills to Detroit steel plants to Chinese iPhone factories.” - Newsday“Freeman uses the history of the factory as a way to re-examine how workers are treated worldwide.” - Pacific Standard“Fascinating. . . . A compulsively readable cultural history of the birth and development of factories and their impact on society.” - Bookpage“Ranging from the early industrial revolution in England to the factories in modern-day China that produce iPhones, with stops along the way in New England mill towns, Henry Ford’s Detroit and Stalin’s Russia, this remarkable book traces the history of the giant factory and the people―capital, labor, consumers, and fascinated observers―whose lives it shaped. If you want to know where the world we live in came from, this is a good place to start.” - Eric Foner

This is a fascinating book. It begins with the late-17th century textile mills in England and goes all the way up to the gargantuan factory in China that's producing Apple products. Taylor's time and efficiency studies are here along with their effects on factories. Labor relations figure largely in the book, Factory architecture is also discussed: for example, the English textile mills -- sometimes 7 or 8 stories high, with (steam) elevators, were precursors of the skyscrapers! Who knew?! One of the best things about the book is Freeman's comparisons: using what he's taught us about Ford to help is understand the Soviet factories, for example.

I was pretty excited to read this one, but ultimately was disappointed. A lot of the more interesting factoids about Ford and Lowell Massachusetts have been covered in other more interesting books. Another issue is that there weren't enough illustrations which I think are necessary to show the size and scale of the factories. The descriptions, while nicely detailed, just left me wanting to see more, which I had to do on my own via google. The final chapter about Foxconn was fairly disappointing. 'Factory Girls' by Leslie T Chang does a lot better job of showing what life is like for the workers in these Chinese factories.

Fascinating book and very well written. Freeman has a great depth of knowledge about the subject and presents his arguments lucidly. This isn't a book about factories per se, although how they worked from the earliest British spinning mills in the 18th century to what's (rather mysteriously)going on at today's gigantic plants like Foxconn City in China where iPhones are manufactured, are interesting reads in and of themselves. What makes the book larger than its subject (factories) is how those who labored in these locations impacted society as a whole, and in many cases, the reverse. Henry Ford's Highland Park plant, the first to use assembly line manufacturing in cranking out Model Ts, actively encouraged visitors, most entranced by this new technology; the physical plant was used to promote the product, the same for the later River Rouge plant that I found fascinating - coal, iron ore, limestone came in from Ford-owned mines on Ford-owned ships and railroads, coking ovens and blast furnaces made steel - and a textile mill and glass factory at the site other components of automobiles - engine blocks poured and bored, sheet steel stamped, parts cast, and all the self-manufactured components emerged from the assembly line as a completed automobile. Freeman then moves on to state-sponsored gigantism, notably what was built during Stalin's first five-year plan, only achieved with a large amount of U.S. (paid for) help, something I was totally unaware of, as I expect the reader will be as well. Stalin's industrialization was not hailed by the state as necessarily the wondrous products turned out, but as the victory of socialism. However, both capitalist and socialist factories suffered the same problem: Communist theoreticians had long attacked factories in the West as exploiters of the workers, done to maximize the profits that accrued to factory owners. These "excess profits" would also be achieved in the Soviet system, now - by some fast mental gymnastics - viewed as OK as these profits would be owned "by the people," not an argument bought by those laboring in the plants.Common to the establishment of all these factories from the beginning to the present was how to assemble the necessary labor pool to run the machines? In and of itself an interesting topic I will not belabor here. Again common to all this history is how was this labor pool controlled, kept on the job under often horrendous working conditions? Techniques varied from raw coercion to building mini "workers' paradises" with decent housing and other amenities at the job site. Almost always, the either harsh or "make nice" attempts failed, in the USA as seen by the rise in the labor union movement starting in the 1930s that prompted manufacturers after WWII to abandon the mega-plant concept and the movement toward smaller plants scattered about the country - almost always to non-union, lower wage scale states, a move, along with the build out of the interstate highway system under Eisenhower, that changed the face of American manufacturing. The change in Chinese manufacturing from Mao to the present - and the change in the ideological justification for same - alone justifies reading this book. As noted earlier, Ford was eager to have people visit his first factories and people enthusiastically responded; today, does anyone know - or care - where their iPhone or sneakers were made?

Enjoyed the book as a light introduction to the history and concept of the factory. Far from being merely an economic process, the author writes about how the factory has also been about changing society.

If you're interested in factories or the history of labor, this is a good book to check out. It's a little more slanted toward the latter, more about the sociological impact of the factory, less about the technical achievements. I haven't seen many books cover the topic of factories in this much depth. The chapter on the Soviet Union was probably the most interesting to me, and nothing I had any clue about before reading the book. I would have preferred it to cover the technical aspects of the factories a bit more, and also to have more text on current day factories. Given what I think the author's goals were, though, I would say he did a great job.

This is a monumental work on the history of the factory, beginning with early textile mills in Europe, and covering the sweep of American industrial development and power, including its phenomenal response to WWII production demands. However, the author completely ignores development in Upstate New York, especially Cohoes, often called the "true center of the Industrial Revolution in the U.S."

Good book that lives up to its name in terms of the amount of details. Obviously written by a professor of history, definitely with a left-leaning lens (you have “dirty hands” if you own Apple stock).Best sentence from the book (hard copy, first edition, pages 263-264): “As Goodyear, GM, Ford, GE, and other American corporations had learned decades earlier, large assemblages of workers who work together, live together, pray together, drink together, and die together can turn the largest, most important factories from models of efficiency into weapons of labor power.”

Excellent overview of the social and political impacts of large scale production in differening economic frameworks. Wanders a bit towards the end, but an important book

I have lived much of my life in the area and have family connections with Gettysburg. That said, I had only hazy knowledge of the Harrisburg part of the campaign. This book is probably about all that we will get until the 200th anniversary roles around, but fortunately, it is excellent in its coverage of the Union side of the operation. The Confederate side is covered fairly well, but there is apparently a shortage of documentation.I would have liked the maps to printed larger; when you have to squint to read a unit label, it tends to distract from an overall appreciation of the situation covered. Having traveled up and down I-81 numerous times, I have some idea of the terrain and how the campaign fit together, but there is no map coverage south of Shippensburg. It would have been nice to have had an introductory map of the whole area south to Hagerstown with indications of the areas covered by the smaller maps.Besides filling in the coverage of the Civil War, readers should note the shortcomings of the militia system on display. Despite the relatively simple requirements of the period, the PA and NY militias did not shine. Although quality varied, in general units panicked easily, often in the face of inferior numbers. After several encounters, they tended to settle down, but it is clear that the senior officers with experience could not use the militia like regular troops until they had those encounters. Proponents of the modern militia movement would do well to give sober consideration to this experience.

I enjoyed this book, because I learned something new about the battle and indeed the Civil War itself. I am well read on the battle of Gettysburg and was aware of General Ewell's northernmost probe towards Harrisburg, but I wasn't aware of how close it had come to success before he was recalled to concentrate the Confederate forces for the larger battle ahead. If General Mead's advance towards Gettysburg had been a day or two late, it is likely Harrisburg would have been taken by the Confederates, with profound political effects. It was instructive to me to see how poorly prepared and led the local militias were, though they labored mightily to perfect their defenses. Also, it was interesting to note the impact of poor intelligence and rumors on the course of the confrontations.

Wingert, like Scott Mingus, has a knack for burrowing into a relatively small subject, operations on the edge of the battle of Gettysburg, and put them in a tactical and operational context. One should remember that the battle at Gettysburg was in part the result of not capturing, either or both, the bridge at Harrisburg and the one at Wrightsville (Mingus' "Flames Before Gettysburg"). Wingert explains the how and why the Confederates failed by digging into original sources overlooked by others. His maps seem properly scaled to the page, unlike some of the other books in the History Press series which shrink them down to the point of uselessness. Maps and period pictures are often extended with modern photos that are well produced. And, while there are many pictures of bearded generals that actually led the fighting, there are no pointless pictures of Lee and Meade.

Very useful and interesting book on a little known aspect of the American Civil War. Thoroughly documented and easy to read, this book deserves a place on every historian's bookshelf. Highly recommended.

I live in the area that is written about in the book. Super detail for the small things that effected the Cumberland Valley . This is a must read for the Civil War enthusiast.

Very well done, recommend the book,I did not realize how far the Confederates had moved into Pennsylvaniaand what was done to defend Harrisburg

A very interesting view from the Confederate aspect. Hard to believe that this book was written by a 14 year old.

This delightful book contains singinfican details of the northern-most confeederate incursion; yet also contains personal vignettes of the people involved. Remarkable for the author to have done so at age 14 or 15. Have ordered this book as a gift for others after reading it.

Practical tips on drawing injuries, pain, working smarter and has a section on exercise which includes combination work/exercise patterns. Loved that Willberg refers to artist injuries as being like athletic injuries.

I'm an illustrator and animator who has suffered (possibly lifelong) injuries due to a poor work set up. Now that I'm working mainly from home, breaks and strengthening exercises are easier for me to do throughout the day. This book gives you very helpful exercises and stretches from head to toe to keep you creating at your best, and doesn't shy from telling you to see a specialist before you ending up hurting yourself worse.I'm very satisfied with my purchase and will be using it throughout my career.
