The Hammer: Why Dogs Attack Us and How to Prevent It, by Bryan Bailey

Review

"The Hammer is a heartfelt and convincing solution to what Bailey calls "willful ignorance." Bailey clearly articulates the relationshipbetween dog and wolf, reminding us that, despite being domesticated, the dog's wolf ancestry and basic "wild" survival instinct can betriggered and completely override the agenda set by a human. It is therefore vital that one respects the animal's basic nature. Baileyasserts that with some rudimentary knowledge of canine behavior, one has the ability to accurately interpret the warning signals givenby a dog when it intends to bite you, so you can either avoid the attack or save yourself when an attack is underway. While Bailey's facts and guidance are straight to the point and effective, his vignettes about several dog victims reveal Bailey'smasterful storytelling skills. Each story drives home Bailey's point about recognizing the warning signals being given by the dog thatforeshadows an attack as well as the need for dog owners to be more responsible. Expertly written, the stories are profound anddisturbing. Each reveals rich characters and setting, the serene beauty and innocence of a moment that is interwoven with suspensethat leads to an inevitable attack that is dramatic and harrowing. Although Bailey acknowledges there are numerous complexities to the subject of dog attacks -- such as ferocity of breed versusowner influence on dog -- he purposely cuts through the overwhelming jargon and dialogue in this topic to provide readers withspecific, comprehensible information to recognize and thwart dog aggression. But The Hammer is not only about saving people.Bailey's non-judgmental tone not only encourages gaining insight to a dog's mindset but also raises awareness for dog owners in theirtraining of dogs. Ultimately, a better understanding of dogs will reduce seemingly "unprovoked" attacks, for which dogs are beingcondemned to die. The Hammer is a moving, thought provoking, and indispensable guide that calls for awareness, education, and action to save not onlythe lives of people but of dogs. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED." Maya Fleischmann, San Francisco Book Review"I cannot recommend this book highly enough to every dog owner, any person who ever comes into contact with the pets of another (which is pretty much everyone, right?), and to all trainers. The author's primary goal is to keep others from being intentionally blind - willfully ignorant. Our believing something to be so doesn't make it so, but neither does our refusing to believe that something is so make it false. Bryan Bailey urges us all to dispense with what he calls "romantic notions" about dogs, and to begin to have a genuine appreciation for the fact that they are not human, they do not think or feel in the same way as humans, and that they can attack "regardless of any benevolence or love provided" when the conditions for an attack are in place. Please, do yourself a favor, whether you own a dog or not. Do your family - especially your children - your friends and your community a favor if you are a dog owner. Pick up a copy of The Hammer and read it. Cover to cover. Go in with an open mind and you're sure to exit with an enlightened one." Patricia Reding, Reader's Favorite

About the Author

Raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, Bryan Bailey grew to appreciate the wildness of the land and its abundant wildlife. In particular, he developed a fondness for the gray wolves that roamed the vast mountain ranges and forests near his home. Under the guidance of a Special Forces Survival Instructor, he spent years studying the social interactions of wolves in their packs and discovered that, beyond obvious physical similarities, there were also behavioral similarities between the wolves and the sled dogs that were his family's pets. Today, with over thirty five years of education and experience studying the natural mechanisms that govern the many uses of aggression by wolves, Bryan has become a Master at understanding how those same mechanisms, passed from the wolf, continue to influence the behavior of modern dogs and why they attack humans. Utilizing what he has learned, Bryan educates thousands of dog owners each year on the causes of dog aggression and how they can prevent from becoming a victim of it. By doing so, Bryan has been credited with saving hundred’s of lives. Bryan and his wife, Kira, live on the banks of the Mississippi River in Memphis, TN, with their children, dogs and cats. Together they own Taming the Wild, WILD DOGS and HOWL - The Way Home for Fearful and Aggressive Dogs.

The information is presented in a clear and organized manner. Anyone can easily grasp the core message. The author takes a somewhat lyrical tone in some passages which adds an interesting twist to what could have been a dry informational book. Not so sure I like the way the recreation scenes of the attacks were written but they definitely make the intended point. I would recommend anyone with a dog read this . Whether you have a teacup yorkie or a large rottweiller, it will definitely help you understand the nature of your dog and if you use the information as intended will help you protect your family, finances, and your dog. Highly recommend for all dog owners, shelter workers or anyone who has a canine in their life. I do disagree with the author regarding his breed specific statements. It's true a large powerful dog can be more dangerous than a small dog for obvious reasons but all of my big dogs were good natured and happy go lucky. It's the responsibility of the owner to know the dog, be aware of their instinctive behaviors and to make certain they are raised and handled responsibly. I have raised and rescued Rottweilers for years and they were all well trained, very sweet and greatly loved members of the family. That being said there is a responsibility that comes with having any dog, especially a large powerful breed and the information in this book should be required reading for ALL dog owners.

My husband and I are going through hell with an aggressive rescue dog. This book has given us an understanding of what is going on and the knowledge to hopefully keep us safe while we.try to train. Everyone with a dog needs to read this book!

This went way beyond what I already know and pragmatically, scientifically explains the why and how of dogs behavior.Advice to heed! Even when you think you know your pets! Especially heed when it's an unknown dog or dogs.Interesting information regarding reactions to look out for. Some very compelling, sad examples of what happens when take a domesticated dog for granted.Having had dogs in my family my entire life, there was only one who was a classic case of having a "hammer" issue.

The content in this book is as equally enlightening and educational as it is important. You are guaranteed to walk away with a vastly deeper knowledge of why dogs do what they do and the thought process that drives the decisons they make. Unfortunately this includes biting.SPOILER ALERT!!! There is more than one instinctive impulse your dog uses before swinging the proverbial “hammer”and your dogs loyalty to you didn’t make the list!!!After reading you will (1) know how to better prevent from becoming the victim of an attack, and (2) learn how to prevent your own beloved dog from being the attacker in a constructive manner/approach that was born from the reality of our dogs shared heritage with the wolf.Along the way you will read tragic stories... Most, or all of these stories could have had different outcomes if only a respectful consideration of how our behavior is perceived by dogs was part of the human process during these interactions. This book, in very clear terms, explains these considerations and how important they are.I hope you enjoy the book as I did.I have read other publications from the author and strongly recommend them as well. They would be great back to back reads.

Excellent, insightful information about dogs' inherent nature and how humans pay the price for not recognizing what dogs are communicating. We make the mistake of overly humanizing dogs and ignoring their natural instinct for self-defense or territory defense. Tragedy ensues when we don't pay attention to dogs' behavior and sadly, people are hurt & killed by their own dogs every year. I learned so much from this book!

This book is the most insightful, riveting, organized, researched, spellbinding, honest, frightening, and important book on what we ALL need to know about dogs. Statistics concerning dog bites to human beings, vicious attacks by dogs, and deaths are increasing, yearly. We must recognize that we do not know what we thought we knew about the mind of man’s best friend, because he is capable of taking life and limb from us. This is a MUST read for every person who loves a dog, every parent who loves a child, every human being who is tempted to run up to the dog in Lowe’s and pet it.

The writer is incredibly condescending. At one point he makes his position clear when he describes a human as "dumber than normal." You will find that he believes people to be pretty stupid very quickly. The tedious examples of bites he writes are long, drawn out, melodramatic, and overwrought. In one he describes a man's love of his Christmas decorations for literally pages. When he describes his own encounter with a dog attack, he seems to have been having a dumber than normal moment in time. He finds what he describes as a 'trail' he can't resist while out for a run in an unfamiliar place. He follows the trail, which turns out to be a private drive onto someone's private property. He is running, and sees four dogs. He describes with disgust that a woman holding a baby and an elderly man fail to come to his rescue. So he is a stranger, trespassing on their private property, and he expects a woman with a baby to come and confront him, or an elderly man to come and see who he is and what he wants? I grant him that there should have been signs about 'private property,' but in the end it is the responsibility of the runner, the walker, the hiker, the biker to know where they are. People out recreating are not entitled to explore every 'trail' or private drive. And that critique is far less long than the overwrought description of the encounter. He gets a star for some good information. But in all truth, the useful information could have been contained in a pamphlet without all of the drama and patronizing sermonizing on his belief that people get bit by dogs because they are too stupid to understand the animals.

Reviewed By Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite *****CBT Worksheets: CBT Worksheets for CBT Therapists in Training is a non-fiction occupational, self-help book written by Dr. James Manning and Dr. Nicola Ridgeway. This book provides a compilation of worksheets for use with clients engaged in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. In addition to providing sample forms, the authors discuss how they are used and provide demonstrative samples that address typical issues CBT clients may have. CBT Worksheets begins with a discussion of the importance of diary keeping by clients. While acknowledging that many clients are not particularly enthusiastic about diary keeping, the different types of diary forms illustrate that diaries can extend beyond the traditional concept of diary into cataloging thoughts, feelings, physiological responses, and behavior. Detailed problem lists are shown to have use in helping clients realize and chart the progress they are making as they continue with their therapy. Writing fosters a sense of detachment from one's feelings, the authors argue, which makes it possible for them to view things more dispassionately and gain a sense of self-reflection. Other worksheets help clients work through limiting beliefs and conditional assumptions and show how old negative rules can be molded into new affirmative rules. Lists of Regulatory Agencies in the UK, Glossary of Terms, References and Listing of Common Medications for treating Anxiety Disorders are included in the Index to this workbook.Dr. James Manning and Dr. Nicola Ridgeway's non-fiction occupational, self-help book, CBT Worksheets: CBT Worksheets for CBT Therapists in Training, offers the CBT Therapist in Training a comprehensive collection of worksheets with guidelines for how they are used in therapy. As a layperson who's read and reviewed several of the authors' other books on CBT, which were geared towards patients, I was fascinated to see how this book encompassed those others and built upon them. While I understand that it includes some exercises best worked on under a therapist's guidance, I found a number of intriguing worksheets that seem suited for individual work, especially the Safe Place Exercise, and consider the FMDS (Future Most Developed Self Exercise) to be absolutely brilliant. I also particularly enjoyed the chapter which discusses the human brain. The authors wrote this book in such a way that it will be easily accessible to their target audience, and the glossary is a handy reference/refresher as well. CBT Worksheets: CBT Worksheets for CBT Therapists in Training is most highly recommended.Reviewed By Divine Zape for Readers' Favorite *****CBT Worksheets: CBT Worksheets for CBT Therapists in Training by Dr James Manning and Dr Nicola Ridgeway is another practical workbook for therapists in training, a must-have tool for any professional in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) who wants to take his or her work seriously and who wants to be taken seriously as well. The book is the work of genius, an evident result of long professional experience, research, and expertise. For most professionals, creating work tools can be very challenging as it involves a lot of discipline, research, and time, but Dr James Manning and Dr Nicola Ridgeway have done the job for both therapists and their clients. The title of this powerful tool can be misleading as it suggests that it is intended for therapists in training, but the material offered can be used by both experienced professionals and rookies in the field of psychology. Readers will find a wide range of exercises and diaries that can be used for clients with different needs. I found Chapter 4 to be particularly interesting - perhaps because I have a strong inclination toward anger - and the exercises are well thought-out and formulated in an easy and very accessible language. This part of the book can help any reader - not only the professionals - to understand how to deal with the powerful emotions and limiting thoughts that can affect their emotional and psychological health. Apart from being a formidable tool for CBT professionals, CBT Worksheets: CBT Worksheets for CBT Therapists in Training is the perfect tool for anyone who is committed to living a healthy lifestyle. Readers will find a ton of useful information in this book, gain clarity about their emotional health, and find the tools they need to transform their lives.Reviewed By Maria Beltran for Readers' FavoriteCBT Worksheets: CBT Worksheets for CBT Therapists in Training by Dr James Manning and Dr Nicola Ridgeway is a must-read for practicing and CBT therapists in training for formulation worksheets that are highly useful in their profession. A form of psychotherapy that focuses on specific problems so that the therapist can assist the client in choosing definite approaches to their problems, CBT aims to treat depression and other mental issues. CBT Worksheets also includes exercises and diaries that can serve as guides for therapists when they select the worksheets that could best help their particular cases. Accompanied by explanations, these exercises, together with the worksheets, are very helpful. Handouts are also provided which can be copied and distributed to clients in the course of their CBT sessions. In Dr James Manning and Dr Nicola Ridgeway's CBT Worksheets: CBT Worksheets for CBT Therapists, practicing CBT therapists as well as those who are still in training will find a treasure trove of materials highly relevant to their work. This includes formulation worksheets, Padesky hot cross bun worksheets, thought records, thought challenging sheets, and several CBT worksheets and handouts that can then be photocopied and used during therapy. CBT believes that mental issues like depression have something to do with the correlation between an unwelcome stimulus and the response of avoiding it, which results in a feeling of fear and anxiety that is already habitual. As such, information gathering is very crucial in CBT. These sheets can be used as tools to encourage the clients to observe themselves objectively so that they can write down their thoughts and discuss concerns with their therapists without the danger of missing anything. Every practicing and CBT therapist in training should reserve a space in their bookshelves for this gem of a book!

I've done some CBT work in the past, but this book really makes sense to me. I bought it, not my therapist, though he likes it too. One of the best pages I've done so far is tracking how I feel compared with how much I believe I accomplished. Since data is entered in every hour, after a week, I able to see my ups and downs in both feelings and accomplishments. The only place where both traits were high was when I went to a therapy pool. Guess I'll be doing more therapy work than before. I will do a page (I do copy them so my original book is still "like new") and then I take it to my therapist and it gives us a good topic to discuss.

It's OK. Used a few items in this for my clients. Better off with workbook from Aaron Beck, MD.

I was expecting better worksheets. Most of these are repetitive.

This is going to be excellent in my counseling work. I look forward to working with as much of these as possible!

I’m an LCSW working in both case management and therapy. This book is easy to copy pages and use in therapy with clients. I incorporate it with my behavior activation techniques.

Some handy techniques, but there are a lot of spelling and grammatical errors which take away from it's credibility.

Not what I thought it would be. All of the worksheets you can find for free on the web.

Perfect work sheets to use with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
