Prof. Kreeft takes one of the world's greatest reference books and adds context and depth to the hundreds of topics covered in the Catechism. That context produces a deeper understanding and relevance of Catholicism in today's world. The book's narrative style makes for a more enjoyable read as well. My faith is perhaps the most significant gift from my parents, so I intend to pass that same gift onto my children and this book is one of the ways I can do that.

I found myself saying "Boy I wish I had this book 40 years ago when I was in school" several times while reading Catholic Christianity. I have starred, underlined, and highlighted countless paragraphs in this book -- his style is very concise and makes you want to jump into the Catholic Church with gleeful abandon. My sister knew fellow students who had him for class at BC, and apparently he converted to Catholicism, so he can see things from different sides of the table. This has got to be one of the most outstanding books for understanding the one and only Church Jesus founded. If somebody asked me to choose just one book to learn about the Catholic church whether as a fourth grader or as an adult, this would be the one. We are using it in the Paul VI Theological Institute classes.

Kreeft is a genius. I read everything he writes. Great for teaching RCIA.

I give this book 4.5 stars. I deducted 1/2 a star, not because of any disagreement in theology I might have with the Catholic faith, but because of a few things the book lacks.I have been in many churches that preach the worst about Catholic Christianity from the pulpit. My late father was a non-practicing Catholic and I learned a little from his testimony about his experiences. Needless to say, I grew up with a skewed view of Catholicism. In working with several devout, intelligent and scholarly Catholics in my ministry, I have found that my initial views were wrong. While I do disagree with several Catholic theologies, I have grown to respect Catholicism and disregard that skewed reasoning with which I was initiated. This book does a superb job of doing this. Few Protestants are going to read through the Catholic Church Catechisms. But, this book does a pretty good job of explaining the general beliefs of the Catholic Church while referencing the CCC and Scripture.Peter Kreeft begins with 10 chapters (154 pages) of what Catholics believe. He then devotes 10 chapters (126 pages) to how Catholics live and 10 chapters on the Sacraments and prayer (143 pages). The "Contents" page does a good job of pointing one in the general direction regarding the topic, and then at the beginning of each chapter, he gives a detailed and numbered topic list for the chapter. For instance, Chapter 5 is titled "Jesus Christ" in the Contents and the beginning of the chapter lists 27 topics including: 1: The Centrality of Christ through 27: Christ the conqueror of the world. This layout is unique and helps point the reader in the general direction.Kreeft does a superb job of explaining in plain English why Catholicism believes its theology and even goes as far to explain very objectively why Protestants object to some Catholic beliefs, such as Marian theology. He does not go into the extreme Protestant positions (such as the ones I was indoctrinated with), but instead gives the even-handed Protestant objections and why they exist. My critiques (why I deducted 1/2 star):- The book lacks an index. This makes finding content in the book much more difficult. The Contents and Chapter details help, but not as much as an index could have.- While this is not a book on Catholic- Protestant relations, Kreeft does delve into some Protestant objections. And since he touches on the topic, it would be helpful for Kreeft to use his superb gift of correct wording to explain why Protestants have some of the more extreme views. It would help Catholics understand this and help Protestants see the err in their ways. The book is supremely well written and covers most topics that would help a non-Catholic understand Catholicism. I bought this book based on the Catholic Christians' reviews below, and was not disappointed in the least. I thank God that it was written since Christianity is not supposed to be divided, and the way to heal the wounds is not through extremism, but devotion and understanding to help reach other through respect and understanding. I recommend this book to all Christians and to non-Christians who find an interest in the study of religion.

A wonderful book for anyone who wants to know about the basics of Catholicism. Kreeft is an exceptional author. He presents complicated information in an accessible manner. I purchased this as an adult before beginning the RCIA process. I have referenced it several times since and recently gifted it to my future sister-in-law who is not Catholic.

"Catholic Christianity" provides an excellent overview of what the Catholic Church teaches and why, in easy-to-understand language. Each chapter is broken up into numerous, short subsections, enabling the reader to digest this challenging material in small bites.Professor Kreeft does not shy away from the Church's "hard" teachings, and at times his treatment of the material is truly inspiring. In case anyone is wondering, this book received the Church's "nihil obstat" and "imprimatur," meaning that it has been reviewed and officially found to be "free of doctrinal or moral error." You can therefore be confident that this book is consistent with the Church's actual, stated positions on the topics covered.I have just two minor criticisms:1. As others have pointed out, the book lacks an index. It really ought to have one.2. Because of space limitations, Prof. Kreeft has had to sketch out the reasoning behind many teachings in such an abbreviated form that it can seem almost simple-minded. Of course, the bases of the Church's teachings are anything but simple-minded -- one has only to read some of Pope Benedict XVI's writings to see that. I just wish that this book had been able to convey more of the perspicacity of Catholic apologetics, so that non-Catholics reading this book would be less likely to come away the all-too-common idea that Catholics are a bunch of superstitious peasants. This is nonetheless an excellent resource and a great way to ease into the published Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Really great summary of Catholic teaching. Concise and memorable. Sometimes the cadence of delivery for so much concise and memorable bulletpoints is easy to tune out so take it a little at a time.

I love the details about Catechism. It gives you a good perspective of history and modern believes. Great book.

From the Back Cover

David M. Potter's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Impending Crisis is the definitive history of antebellum America. Potter's sweeping epic masterfully charts the chaotic forces that climaxed with the outbreak of the Civil War: westward expansion, the divisive issue of slavery, the Dred Scott decision, John Brown's uprising, the ascension of Abraham Lincoln, and the drama of Southern succession. Now available in a new edition, The Impending Crisis remains one of the most celebrated works of American historical writing.

In order to understand the crucial years between the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, years in which the character and future course of the American republic were largely created and charted, there are three superb books whose breadth and depth make them required reading: The Rise of American Democracy: Jefferson to Lincoln by Sean Wilentz, Empire of Liberty: A History of the Early Republic, 1789-1815 (Oxford History of the United States) by Gordon S. Wood and The Impending Crisis, America Before the Civil War 1848-1861. The years between the two wars featured immense growth in the size of the new nation, essentially filling the continent and fulfilling manifest destiny. America was now a shining new land bordered by two oceans, an island of spectacular size whose geographic isolation helped it to give birth to a new form of democracy, free from the fear of invasion. The spectacular growth in size functioned as a powerful attraction to landless immigrants. The American form of republican democracy, always a work-in-progress, now contended with an increasingly diverse population whose experience in their new country was like a political laboratory in which the nature of freedom was held up for studyReading all three books offer the reader a firm background in the nature of the events of the era and will provide a true, in-depth understanding of their significance. Where David M. Potter's book really shines is in its tight focus on the critical years of 1848-1861. These were years in which the Mexican War provided America with its southwest. When the dust had cleared and hostilities had ceased, Mexico had lost about one-third of its territory, including nearly all of the present-day states of California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. The 1857 Dred Scott decision in the Supreme Court held that blacks, whether now enslaved or free, and whose ancestors were imported into the U.S .and were sold as slaves, could not be an American citizen and therefore had no standing to sue in federal court. The ruling essentially said that slaves were not people, but (valuable) property. Abolitionist John Brown resorted to violence in reaction to that ruling and to others. Especially significant was the rise of Abraham Lincoln to the presidency and his willingness to address the slavery issue head-on by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862.The Impending Crisis, with its keen focus on the final strife-ridden 13 years, is an especially fine introduction to the Civil War. The cascading calamities that led to war are the source of this book's superb narrative. If you are looking for an exceptional analysis of the Civil War's genesis. The Impending Crisis is one of the finest available. If you wish to place these final years in context, then read all three books for a superlative overview of events. The Impending Crisis 1848-1861 is a true classic of historical writing.

Published in 1976, this comprehensive work remains the best book on this era that I have read so far. This is not just my opinion. So said James Lee McDonough in his 2016 biography of William Tecumseh Sherman. "The best single work on the period, for a combination of detailed information, excellent analysis, and acceptable readability remains David Potter's Impending Crisis." (p256, n.15). McDonough both cites and quotes it extensively for good reason. If I was allowed only two books to try to comprehend the American Civil War, I would choose McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom, and this one. Beware, however that, firstly it is not an easy read, and secondly, once into it, it will be difficult to put down.

I would rate this as one of the most important books I have read. For the first time, I came to an understanding of many of the mysteries of the events that lead to the Civil War which seem impenetrable to a modern reader.Potter first outlines the demographic and social conditions of the United States in the period which preceded the War. The turning point was the Mexican War which upset the balance between North and South with the addition of new territories whose status regarding slavery was unclear. Potter shows that ethnically, the American population in 1850 was quite homogeous---mostly Protestants of English backgroud. Thus, ethnic diversity was NOT the cause of the tensions between North and South. Potter shows that the extreme emotions regarding Kansas and the other new territories regarding the status of slavery in them was purely theoretical...the geographical, climatic and agricultural conditions there were not conducive to a slave economy, yet the South was extremely emotionally involved in this abstract argument. The book then shows how national economic development was retarded by the South in such matters as the building of a Transcontinental Railroad and passage of the Homestead Act, both of which they opposed because they viewed them as strengthening anti-slavery elements in the US.One particularly fascinating thing Potter shows is the fact that anti-slavery sentiment overlapped with anti-immigrant feeling which was espoused by the Know-Nothing nativists. Potter says this seems irrational to a modern person, but he shows how the anti-Catholic feelings aroused by the recent Irish immigration was part and parcel of view of Catholics being part of a supposedly sexually perverted, conspiratorialist organization which they believed the Catholic Church represented, but those who held this felt the same way about the aristocratic slave-owing plantation barons in the South. Thus the new anti-slavery Republican Party went out of its way to attract nativist, anti-Catholic voters.Another interesting fact that is brought out is that many militantly anti-slavery and abolitionist people actually had little love for the Blacks and felt the best solution was to free them and then "send the back where they came from", i.e. Africa. Thus, many anti-slavery people held these views because they thought that slavery was bad for them, by giving slave owners inexpensive labor which free white laborers could not compete with, fearing that it would weaken the free labor movement in the US. Abraham Lincoln came across like this during his famous 1858 Senate race with Stephen Douglas, but Potter attributes this more to political opportunism and trying to win votes among racist Illinois voters than to real sentiments on Lincoln's part.Another valuable section deals with the legal intracicies of the Dred Scott decision. I found out that it did NOT legalize slavery in the states, only Congress was stripped of the power of prohibiting slavery in the territories. It was then believed that states were sovereign and they did have the rigth to prohibit slavery within their borders. Finally, Potter shows that up until Fort Sumter, the North thought the South was bluffing and would not go through with secession. Both the Democratic and Whig parties had both Northern and Southern branches and both had pro- and anti-slavery wings so this political balance held the country together. The collapse of the Whigs and the victory of the anti-slavery, sectional (i.e. Northern only) Republican party in the election of 1860 was the straw that broke the camel's back.I found the book a very good, well-written interesting read, and it provides a real education to the reader regarding social and political developments in a state of national crisis. Highly recommended.

The author is usually one of my favorites. The first 90% of this novel was so predictable and frustrating. In fairness, the frustrating part was the format. Since it was so predictable, I just wanted it to be sequential. If I was the kind of person who could start a book and not finish it, I would have. It felt like a chore. I did start skimming halfway through, just to get to the end. That last 10% got good, was actually a potential plot that I would have thoroughly enjoyed, but it was rushed and overly dramatic at the same time. The Police Officers and FBI Agents would never behave that way, perhaps one individual for storyline purposes, but not the whole force. The actual ending was saccharine and simply unbelievable. Lots of potential in hindsight, but in my mind was an early rough draft that editors and publishers should have steered another direction.

Did Lisa scottolini write this book? I don’t know where to begin. It was a mess. Terrible dialog. Seriously calling everyone honey all the time got on my last nerve. But that was the least of the issues with this book. It jumped back and forth between courtroom and previous time which is fine but it was jumpy and not well connected. I thought maybe this was her first book and they re published it. It needs serious editing. I love her books but this was one hot mess. Don’t waste your money.

The plot became totally unbelievable. Every story line was rushed, from Noah going to prison and getting out, from Maggie finding out the truth, to felling a murderous rampage, to Anna being rescued. And is the FBI SERIOUSLY GOING TO LET A CIVILIAN RUN INTO GUNFIRE TO REUNITE WITH HER DAUGHTER?? Come on!! And the nickname PG?? All I kept thinking was “pregnant.” Don’t waste your time!

Unfortunately, I don’t this this book is up to Lisa Scottoline’s usual standards. I think the plot was all over the place, and the leaps of logic were astounding. I usually really like her work, but I’m sorry to say I didn’t care so much for this one. I’ll continue to buy her books, because this is the first bad experience I’ve had.

It pains me to say this but this was one of the worst books I have ever tried to get through! I ended up skipping through it and finally finished it. Convoluted and stupid! What a waste of hard earned $$! On a scale of 1-10 I would not even rate it one!

The story line itself was good, but the format was choppy, and difficult to follow. There needed to be more of a storyline once Anna as rescued. This is actually the first of Lisa Scottolines books I felt disappointed in.

Unfortunately for this reader the book dragged on and on, to the point I began to wonder how many more chapters was I going to have to read before the end would be near. Also this book reminds me of three other books I have read in the past, girl pretends to be long lost missing daughter, new husband gets accused of molesting daughter and gets framed for her murder only to be revealed....well I do not want to give away the ending. Suffice it to say I wou ld purchase this book but i am sure thousands of others will love it.

This is the first Lisa Scottoline book I have read - it will be the last. The plot is outrageously stupid - I mean seriously...Post Natal Psychosis, a plane crash, a 10 year old with an uncommon speech disability, 17 year old set to inherit 50 million dollars at 18 with a Trust Lawyer that signs off on a $75,000 car without blinking, murder, sex trafficking , corrupt prison guards... Why not add a terrorist dirty bomb, a few child wizards, some space aliens, and a giant Japanese monster rampaging through Tokyo?Despite the adult subject matter, the book is written at the level of a children's novel - vocabulary and dialog is not even to par for young adults. I was hoping to find a new author with a backlog of work I could enjoy - not this one! What a waste of time and money. Next time I'll read the reviews before I buy!

This collection is an informative guide about one of the most important historical empires with a vast territory which rose around 7 centuries ago and survived till the early 20th century.

I loved this combination of books. I usually don't read anything in this time period but I was curious. The Ottomans were much more than I expected-lots of intrigue, diplomacy, warfare and culture and an empire to rival the size of Rome at its peak. Keeping a notebook on the succession of the Sultans and the multitude of prince's helped a lot. Complex as some of the thrillers I have read. I also liked his style of writing on these three. It kept me interested.

Though not within my usual realm of reading I found this book interesting. A great deal of information on a empire that was in control for a long time and a ruler in Sulieman that has few rivals throughout history.

In these books we see one of the most dominant empires from ancient or close to it times until the early 1900s. An empire that lasted such a long time . This gives all one needs to know about the Ottoman Empire. Good & bad rulers along with their decisions impacted the world at the time & beyond.Excellent job by Captivating History.

This was an informative read about the Ottoman Empire. It lasted a long time in a region where the empires come and go quite frequently.

Great stuff yes yes

Captivating History is a great resource for many students and adults that need refresher's on each topic covered. They provide just the right amount of details needed for the learner to learn the information. This selection of books is a great read.
