When We Were Alone

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3—A young girl learns about family and heritage in this gentle picture book about the legacy of Native American boarding schools. Working in the garden with her grandmother, a pigtailed girl asks why her "Nókom" wears colorful clothing and her hair in a long braid. Her grandmother explains that as a child, she was sent far away from her family to a school where she was forced to wear plain clothing and chop off her hair. "They wanted us to be like everyone else," she explains. But when they were alone, the children would cover themselves in the fall leaves and braid grasses into their hair in order to recapture the identities they left behind. As her grandmother speaks Cree to a passing bird and sits laughing with her brother, she shares how it feels to be forbidden to speak the only language you know and how stolen moments with a sibling can feel like a lifeline to home. "Now, I am always with my family," the grandmother says. Flett's spring palette of warm blues and browns punctuated with splashes of red contrasts the loving moments between grandmother and granddaughter with stark winter whites and grays depicting boarding school life. The repetitive structure creates a predictable narrative; together the illustrations and Robertson's child-centered text make the boarding school experience accessible to a young audience without glossing over its harshness. VERDICT A poignant family story covering a part of history too often missing from library collections. A first purchase.—Chelsea Couillard-Smith, Hennepin County Library, MN

Review

"Robertson’s soft rhythmic text and Julie Flett’s simple, yet expressive, illustrations combine to create a beautiful story of strength and resistance. The muted colours used in the pictures of residential school life remind readers of the suffering endured by Indigenous children. The contrast between these pages, and the vibrant greens, reds, and blues of the illustrations depicting residential school students temporarily escaping into nature, is heartbreakingly effective. Robertson never tries to disguise the underlying tragedy of Nókom’s experience, but together he and Flett have crafted a book that is still suitable for younger readers, in spite of the intense subject matter. When We Were Alone is an incredible work of art and is very highly recommended." - National Reading Campaign (Roseanne Gauthier National Reading Campaign 2017-06-20)A quiet story…of love and resistance.… Flett’s collage illustrations, with their simplicity and earthy colors, are soulful and gentle….  All readers will connect with how Nókom lives in celebration of colors, her long hair, her language, and, most of all, her family. - The Horn Book Magazine, a starred review (The Horn Book Magazine)"When We Were Alone is rare. It is exquisite and stunning, for the power conveyed by the words Robertson wrote, and for the illustrations that Flett created. I highly recommend it." - Debbie Reese, American Indians in Children's Literature. (Debbie Reese American Indians in Children's Literature 2016-09-23)"…Robertson handles a delicate task here admirably well: explaining residential schools, that shameful legacy, and making them understandable to small children. It’s a dark history, and the author doesn’t disguise that, but he wisely focuses the grandmother’s tale on how, season by season, the students use creativity, imagination, and patience to retain their sense of identity. A beautifully quiet, bold strength arises from the continued refrain “When we were alone” and in how the children insisted on being themselves. Flett’s gorgeous, skillful illustrations have a flattened, faux naïve feel to them, like construction paper collage, a style that works perfectly with the story. She nicely contrasts the school’s dull browns and grays with the riotous colors surrounding Nókom and gets much expression from her simple silhouettes.Spare, poetic, and moving, this Cree heritage story makes a powerful impression." - Kirkus Reviews (Kirkus Reviews)"Julie’s Flett’s illustrations are impeccable. The contrast between the colourful and bleak illustrations perfectly match the narrative. The relatively small size of the book makes it perfect for sharing with younger children. When We Were Alone addresses the topic of residential schools and, just as importantly, aspects of Cree culture and language. There is such gentleness about When We Were Alone that makes it an appropriate book for the even youngest of readers. Simply put, this is a much-needed book.Highly Recommended."- Dr. Kristen Ferguson, CM Magazine (Dr. Kristen Ferguson CM Magazine)Robertson's text moves between the present and the past, the girl's questions and Nókom's memories, which deepen and intensify the quiet, powerful way she lives out her own culture, day by day, in the present. A beautifully rendered story of resisitance and love, this is made all the more luminous by Flett's art - not just by flashes of fuschsia or scarlet among ochre grasses, but by her precisely observed images of the compact bodies of the uniformed children, bowed beneath the weight of the scissors, or lovingly tending each other's hair. Highly recommended. - Deirdre Baker, Toronto Star (Deirdre Baker Toronto Star)"Done simply, but with devastating clearness this is the story of a woman telling her granddaughter of her time in one of the boarding schools to which Canadian First Nation children were taken. She tells of the brutal methods used to strip them of their own cultures and how they managed to quietly, but firmly resist this. The lovely illustrations further the powerful emotional clout of this important book." - Monica Edinger, Educating Alice (Monica Edinger Educating Alice)Flett's spring palette of warm blues and browns punctuated with splashes of red contrasts the loving moments between grandmother and granddaughter with stark winter whites and grays depicting boarding school life. The repetitive structure creates a predictable narrative; together the illustrations and Robertson's child-centred text make the boarding school experience accessible to a young audience without glossing over its harshness. Verdict: a poignant family story covering a part of history too often missing from library collections. - Chelsea Couillard-Smith, Hennepin County Library, MN (Chelsea Couillard-Smith)

This is a quiet picture book, that sneaks up on you. There are two levels here, one of a young child asking her grandmother, her kókom, why she does things the way she does. Why does she dress in bright colors, why does she wear a long braid, why does she speak in Cree? And very simply, her kókom explains about the residential schools where these things were all forbidden. The residential schools were a horrid part of history, and it is important for children, and adults, to realize that real people were hurt by this policy, and its legacy. It is so good that publishers are coming out with stories to tell about this, and being written by Indigenous people as well, as who better to tell their own story.Highly recommend this book as a beautiful picture book for libraries, schools, and home libraries. This author has also been doing graphic novels of First Nation history, which are amazing as well.Brovo to High Water Press for this, and other books they have been brining out about the First Nation experience. Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

In a beautifully written way, that celebrates the importance of their culture, it tells of the horrific methods used at boarding schools to rip indigenous childrens' culture from them. The illustrations, the prose patterns, the formatting and design...all serve to make this an accessible book for even young children to start to learn about the reality of the history of treatment of First Nations people.

The illustrations certainly complement the story. I believe I've become a Julie Flett fan. Poignantly simple so as not to overwhelm the story. Nice

Entertaining even as the difficulties of their lives were storied.

Sensitively written book that doesn't soften the upsetting ways that children were treated, but chooses to center their ingenuity and survival skills. It's always tricky to write about traumatic experiences -- you don't want to pretend that they have no effect on children and therefore weren't that bad, but at the same time you want to honor the resilience that people do have. You know your own child best but this could be suitable for children as young as 6. Beautiful illustrations, poetic writing.

This was a gift to a teacher.

This is a great book.

Absolutely a must buy in any picture book collection for any age.

I have taken some time off from chess and decided to sign up for a local tournament, since its been almost two years since I played a game due to work keeping me busy. I decided to get into chess mode by practicing puzzles before the tournament. I have many chess puzzles books and many are very good. the first book dealt with tactics but at the stage I am presently at it was too easy bc of the clues, i decided i needed something a bit more challenging, this book is perfect. Lots of puzzles intended for more advance players. The puzzles wont give you a clue and assumes you know basic tactic motifs already, your objective is to find the right move. What makes it even more challenging yet adds to the appeal of this book is that the puzzles dont all lead to a mate or clear win of an entire piece like other puzzle book. Many of the puzzles rely on tactics that will win you a pawn, and not necessarily more. This is perfect for intermediate players, bc in tournaments many times the games come down to who has that extra pawn, and studying tactics that lead to that, helps you evaluate positions for just that. So some puzzles lead to mate, some lead to clear win of a piece and some just a pawn, some puzzles require a prepatory move before you can exploit a tactic, but you are given no clues what to look for. Some puzzles even have what appears to be a clear good move, but when you look at the solution you find an even better move existed. Perfect book for players that already have a good grasp of basic tatics but want something more challenging. This book coild easily get a 5 star but I did find some mistakes which I validated with Shredder, I contacted publisher for an errata and no reply so deducted a star. I have attached one picture for you to see one of the mistakes. The book calls it mate in 5. I had problems seeing the mate in five bc I could see delay moves, so i ran the puzzle on both shredder and hiarchs both came up with mate in 11. But overall great book. Another reason why this book cant get a five is because some of the puzzles can only be solved if you can guess the bad move made in the game. Yes guess the bad move, When solving puzzles one normally tried to figure out the best move for white and the best move for black in this book especially in the fiendish calculations section, you will find that several puzzles cant be solved unless you know what bad moved was played, so in a sense the solution is not correct because the best moves were not made for both sides. This one feature of the book makes me want to give it three stars because those problems are analysis of a games position. What the author should have done is gone to the position where the bad move was played and used that as the puzzle with the correct replies, rather than given you a puzzle four moves before tha bad move was played and expecting the puzzle solver to know a bad move would be played on the fourth move for example. In the solution the author does explain a better move was missed so I left it at four stars. But it can get fustrating when you are looking for the best move for a while and then find out your solution can not match the books solution because the solution was based on a bad move be made somewhere along the line. but bc it is overall a really good book. As for the those puzzles where you cant really solve unless you guess the not so best move, you have to look at it as studying a position as if you were studying an annotated game. one example of such a puzzle is number 1031 on the fourth move for white.

I thought I was good after working my way through Pandolfini's 300 checkmates book. I got this book to work on other tactical aspects. I found out it makes a huge difference when the type of win or defense is not stated and I don't know how many moves deep it will be. My online 10 minute blitz rating is 1430, with my common losses coming from losing pieces to tactics, or doing a sacrifice to start an attack that later fails. My USCF long game tournament rating 10 years ago was somewhere around 1300.I decided to get this book, in hopes of starting with the easier problems and working my way up. Well, the "easier" are doable, but require considering 2-4 branch variations each half move 2-3 full moves deep to find the forced win. They are doable by a class E player who has a pencil and paper and plenty of time. I then flipped through the book, sampling 12 problems. I solved 2 after two and 5 minutes each. I saw the necessary trees to solve 2 others, but chose not to grind out the right path. I felt a little lost on the other 8. This book confirms my suspicions that my tactics are my weak point, though I'm glad I bought it before going to any tournaments. If you can't solve these, then may you should first before going to a tournament.I know I should do at least a few problems a day. Update: Out of the first 6 I finally solved 4. It is difficult making myself work though these when they take so long. I am familiar with forks, pins, discoveries, and several other tactics. I'm just not good at weeding through the many possibilities and being sure that a solution I found is forced. Checkmates are much easier that capturing material because the king must respond to check, and once checkmate is reached, I know there was not a better move. Even if I see a way to win a pawn, I don't know if the other side can retaliate later, or if I missed capturing a night. And since the king is not in check, my opponent can always choose from may responses I have to consider.

With 1200 problems in its collection, this book looks like another quantity-over-quality compilation at first. Not so. From the first page on, I was immensely impressed by the author's careful selection and ordering of these puzzles. Not only are they challenging, but they are also all from actual competitive games, most of which occurred in tournaments of the last decade. Basically, the author condensed these tournaments to their most exciting moments and presented these highlights for the readers to enjoy, one after another. As a bonus, the year, the tournament and the players are all listed, so it is quite straightforward to look them up in a database and find out how any game ended up in the particular situation.I think this book will be enjoyable to anyone between 1200 and 2000. I do not agree with the previous reviewer, however, on the claim that chess and family are mutually exclusive. In fact, I am reading this book so as to delay falling behind my son in chess. Oh, the joy of rearing a child!

I bought this book with the intention of working my way through it to improve my overall tactical play. I found the problems well researched (no errors) and of sufficient level to challenge me. Im graded 1870 and managed to solve most of the problems but many of them took a while to figure out. I think that the problems would even provide useful practice for master level players. So far, I've worked my way through the book two and a half times and I use it along with the Kindle book " Practical Chess Excersises:600 lessons from tactics to strategy" as the base for daily tactical practice. The book has helped my tactical play a lot and I'm very happy with it - money well spent.
